00:19:46 <JacobMastel> Hey powerjuce you use Miranda correct?
00:20:01 <powerjuce> yessir
00:20:19 <JacobMastel> Could you help me do some configurating on it?
00:21:03 <powerjuce> sure what do u need?
00:21:32 <JacobMastel> Well first is on the main screen I only see text not the protocall icon. I'd like to make it so I see the icon but not the text. Any idea on how to do that?
00:21:49 <JacobMastel> And I want to get a better theme for it but i can't figure out how to theme it.
00:21:58 <JacobMastel> I get a bunch of out of date tutorials when I google it
00:22:28 <powerjuce> yea u get that a lot
00:23:08 <powerjuce> ok your best bet for the theme is this site: http://addons.miranda-im.org/index.php?action=display&id=82
00:23:22 <powerjuce> about the text thing what do u mean?
00:23:30 <JacobMastel> You know the buddy list?
00:23:42 <JacobMastel> At the bottom where the icons for all my protocalls used to be is text
00:23:54 <JacobMastel> So instead of the Yahoo icon I see a yahoo online
00:24:53 <powerjuce> JacobMastel: ok go to options>Customize>icons and add the icosn u want
00:25:52 <powerjuce> make sure u select expert mode

01:37:13 <pa_3558> there is this new photoshop layout for gimp right
01:37:20 <MaienM> pa_3558: http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable/photoshop_layout
01:37:33 <pa_3558> apparently it is no working for me
01:38:00 <MaienM> what part of it is not working for you?
01:38:31 <pa_3558> it installs correctly but the laout does not come up when i open GIMP
01:38:52 <daBomb69> Is it the most recent version of GIMP?
01:39:19 <MaienM> do you realise that "The screenshot also shows the GIMP Portable Background Window add-on which combines GIMP into a single window."?
01:40:13 <pa_3558> ya

01:41:19 <MaienM> are you sure you installed them correctly?

01:42:13 <MaienM> what is the path your gimp is installed to, and where are the plugins located?
01:43:18 <pa_3558> part of it is in data under gimp and the rest is in "other"
01:43:33 <pa_3558> ya
01:44:00 <pa_3558> i installed them just as the default directory given in there
01:44:22 <pa_3558> it is the most recent version of gimp
01:45:06 <MaienM> well then I don't really know what the issue could be, I haven't used the ps layout myself

01:51:24 <MaienM> JohnTHaller: any chance you could help pa_3558 with a gimp ps layout problem? http://patrickpatience.com/nascent-project/portableapps/irc/logs/?t=2009-03-27#T01-37-13
01:51:27 <pa_3558> ya i installed it after installing gimp
01:52:32 <MaienM> pa_3558: it seems it requires you to have run gimp at least once before installing it, else it seems it will not work
01:52:48 <JohnTHaller> Gimp should be installed to X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable. The addons should be installed to the exact same directory (the installer takes care of putting them in the right place within X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable). And you have to run it once before installing the add-ons
01:54:32 <pa_3558> i did that and checked whether the files are there or not. the files were there but when i opened gimp i didn't get the photoshop layout
01:54:49 <JohnTHaller> You know it's only a subtle change on the right, right?
01:55:02 <pa_3558> ya
01:56:16 <pa_3558> ok i will leave that issue but i want to ask wheter i can stick all the gimp windows into one window
01:56:54 <JohnTHaller> Alright, start again. Go into X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable. Delete the Data directory.

15:10:03 <ZachThibeau> howdy JohnTHaller :)
15:10:21 <JohnTHaller> I'm probably gonna push it out as a 1.6 release with updated translations and auto-run of apps enabled (via INI) and portable fonts. Just to keep more features coming to everyone along with the bug fixes
15:11:55 <JohnTHaller> As well as a simple theme ability so you can install a test theme to try out
15:12:07 <ZachThibeau> nice :)
15:12:08 <JohnTHaller> Mainly for themers to start testing stuff out
15:13:07 <JohnTHaller> It adds in the progress bar as it is loading apps to. So the menu comes up almost instantly, and then shows you the progress as it detects all the apps you have installed: http://portableapps.com/temp/apploadprogress.png
15:13:47 <ZachThibeau> cool
15:15:06 <JohnTHaller> Ok, here's the menu at 120dpi on Vista: http://portableapps.com/temp/vista120dpi.png
15:16:13 <KookyMan> John - is a normal style options screen in the plans for 2.0? All the INI editing probably means a significant number of options go unnoticed. After all, real men don't read directions. (I know I don't. Imagine how many things I learned when I actually finally did read it.)
15:16:22 <JohnTHaller> You'll note that the graphics are a little distorted. It's unavoidable at the moment, but it lets it grow larger on a 120dpi screen (which is what apps are supposed to do). All PAF apps will have good looking icons (32x32 resized down to fit). Non-PAF app icons will still have the right and bottom pixel missing, but will look acceptable. And the fonts now all fit better, too.
15:16:40 <JohnTHaller> And here it is if you set the menu to large fonts when at 120dpi: http://portableapps.com/temp/vista120dpilarge.png
15:16:41 <ZachThibeau> KookyMan: if you were a real man you would read directions ;)
15:17:31 <JohnTHaller> Yes, the options window will be in 2.0. We're gonna need a longer lead time because we'll need 38 translations of it done. That's why there's no right-click menu for Run, Run As, Rename, Hide, Pin to top, Pin to bottom, properties, etc right now... because it would be English only
15:17:51 <sar3th> KookyMan, ZachThibeau: real men read directions and go there without a navigation system ;)
15:18:07 <ZachThibeau> sar3th: I do that too :)
15:18:08 <JohnTHaller> Real men just KNOW. :-P
15:18:12 <ZachThibeau> lol

15:18:39 <ZachThibeau> man I'm so bored XD
15:18:41 <JohnTHaller> I'm working on a way to do better theming of 120dpi, but it may come later
15:18:48 <JohnTHaller> sar3th: what language?
15:18:53 <sar3th> german
15:19:17 <JohnTHaller> we have a couple already... but it couldn't hurt to have more :-)
15:19:43 <sar3th> i'd love to help
15:19:46 <JohnTHaller> Maybe I'll add the right-click menu to 1.6 and see if we can get any translations over the weekend for a Monday release. Just do what we can for now.
15:20:11 <ZachThibeau> I would do french but.... I haven't spoken or translated french for a looong time now
15:20:45 <JohnTHaller> KookyMan: So what do you think of the look/
15:21:39 <KookyMan> Looks normal.. which is good if its 120
15:22:58 <JohnTHaller> It is. The menu ends up a lot bigger (scaling is on for the whole window) but the graphics get a little distorted. I'm working on detecting and subbing in higher res ones for when at 120dpi (since I can detect it like Wine) but it messes up the curved edges at the top. So we'll see.
15:23:38 <JohnTHaller> Higher res icons for folders and the PA logo and eject and exit are easy... the form is a little trickier. It'll be optional for themers to do but much appreciated by 120dpi users.
15:28:17 <KookyMan> *nods
15:29:28 <JohnTHaller> So, I think we'll have our bases covered with the 1.6 release. Sadly, I haven't figured out a way to display icons properly in Wine yet. I was able to detect it and use the square version of the theme like with Win9x (since neither Wine nor Win9x support transparent areas in windows).

16:32:28 <Bensawsome> which most non admin accounts cant do

16:42:17 <Fireweb> i was basically need something to create writable drives
16:42:27 <Fireweb> that emulate real cd/dvd
16:43:01 <Fireweb> and instead of burning to discs i can burn to that drive directly and saves the data as iso files
16:43:14 <JohnTHaller> InfraRecorder can '
16:43:15 <sar3th> JohnTHaller: you're right, after that it works fine :) thanks
16:43:19 <JohnTHaller> 'burn' to an ISO
16:43:37 <JohnTHaller> But if you're looking for a drive letter, then no, you can't do that in Windows without admin rights.
16:50:05 <sar3th> JohnTHaller: sorry to interrupt again, but is there a way of putting the driveletter of cornice portable's drive in the ini?
16:50:58 <JohnTHaller> No
16:51:11 <JohnTHaller> You could try manually setting a relative path
16:55:36 <sar3th> okay..sadly cornice doesn't accept that
16:57:56 <Fireweb> thanks JohnTHaller, unfortunately i need to do you're last words :( there is a program called tunepat that can create such drives but it's not free
16:59:55 <JohnTHaller> It won't work without admin rights. Windows 2000 and up won't let non-admin accounts do drive letters. There is no way around it.
17:00:26 <sar3th> JohnTHaller: think i will need to rewrite the launcher, because for editing the file must be saved somewhere
17:00:51 <JohnTHaller> I think you'd have to rewrite cornice
17:01:13 <sar3th> that's be the other option, but editing the launcher is simpler
17:01:21 <JohnTHaller> The launcher only updates the INI. As your drive letter will be different on every PC and yuo can't change the file on the fly, only Cornice can handle the change
17:01:53 <JohnTHaller> If Cornice doesn't support a relative path, then your only option is to copy it locally and run it from there. Like we do with FF in live mode.
17:02:21 <JohnTHaller> No matter what you do in the launcher, if Cornice doesn't support a relative path or being passed the path to what you want on the command line, it won't work.
17:02:43 <JohnTHaller> If it does support a command line, you can pass the command line to the launcher and it'll pass it to cornice as is
17:02:50
17:03:12 <JohnTHaller> You just delete it
17:03:17 <JohnTHaller> You can't copy settings back to a CD
17:03:27 <JohnTHaller> And it's using internal settings, not the local ones.
17:04:17 <sar3th> ?? i want to rename existing local settings, copy my settings to the local harddrive, launch cornice and in the end clean up again
17:07:57 <JohnTHaller> No
17:08:01 <JohnTHaller> Do not affect local settings
17:08:12 <JohnTHaller> Cornice Portable uses its own internally
17:08:19 <JohnTHaller> There is no reason to touch the local ones
17:09:18 <sar3th> Cornice Portable sets HOME to its Dara\settings instead..i don't think i will ever be able to edit the ini on a read-only medium with that
17:09:55 <JohnTHaller> So set HOME to TEMP\Cornice Portable and edit it there
17:10:03 <JohnTHaller> But do not affect local settings
17:10:07 <JohnTHaller> It's nad form
17:10:08 <JohnTHaller> bad
17:10:16 <sar3th> okay

17:32:29 <JohnTHaller> Ok, it sounds like something may be up with the flash drive. You could try rebooting and try deleting again. That may work
17:32:45 <JohnTHaller> You should also double-check your PC for any viruses and malware... just to be sure that's not it.
17:32:58 <pa_1596> ok mate thank you kindly for your help it has given me a few ideas
17:33:06 <JohnTHaller> hang on... one more thing.,.
17:33:12 <pa_1596> ok
17:34:05 <pa_1596> grand slam congrats?
17:34:05 <JohnTHaller> If both of those fail, you should backup all the data on the drive locally and then reformat it... then put what you want back on... but hang onto the backup. A lot of times when drives are about to fail, they exhibit some odd behaviour like this. So, just keep an eye on it and back it up... wouldn't want you to lose anything.
17:34:29 <pa_1596> k cheers

17:35:25 <JohnTHaller> Hey, what do you guys think about a downloadable PA.c uninstaller?
17:36:14 <onestoploser> I, myself, would have no use for it.
17:36:40 <onestoploser> Others may find it useful. Mostly casual users I think.
17:36:46 <JohnTHaller> It would be a simple NSIS wizard like backup. It'll show a warning saying that the apps and your data will be removed. It'll delete everything in X:\PortableApps. Delete StartPortableApps.exe and autorun.inf if it is ours unmodified. And then remove the custom icons from Documents, Pictures,. Videos and Music and remove the folders if they are empty.
17:36:52 <JohnTHaller> I think that would make uninstalling easier on people.
17:38:34 <onestoploser> There would be a lot less support for people who join in here and ask "How do I uninstall xxx?"
17:38:35 <onestoploser> :)
17:38:52 <JohnTHaller> Yeah
17:39:28 <JohnTHaller> Or maybe two options... one to remove just the platform... for people that may be using an alternate menu like PStart or one of the mods.... or a complete uninstall of the platform and apps.
17:40:42 <JohnTHaller> Maybe include it under the Options menu, too... Uninstall PortableApps.com. Make it even easier for folks to try it out and remove if they don't like it.
17:41:15 <onestoploser> That sounds like a good idea
17:41:27 <onestoploser> Including it in the options menu.
17:42:04 <onestoploser> It should use very little drive space so you wouldn't have to worry about bloat either.
17:42:14 <JohnTHaller> I can even let the built in uninstaller copy to local temp and run outside the menu, close the menu, do the uninstall and then self-delete, too
17:42:20 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, it would be about 100k
17:42:25 <onestoploser> Yeah
18:01:53 <KookyMan> John - Is there any faster way of handling ejection? I know from Explorer you can just right click on the drive and 'Safely Remove' and it bypasses all the dialogs. If that speed could be integrated into PAF at some point, it would definately be a nice thing.

21:15:34 <pa_6710> can i make the suite start without windows asking me what to do?
21:16:37 <KookyMan> pa_6710 - I believe thats a windows setting.
21:16:40 <JohnTHaller> Hi pa_6710. Yes and no. Windows itself will always ask for USB keys. And even for CD ROMs from Vista onward.
21:16:47 <JohnTHaller> For security reasons.
21:17:06 *** gluxon has parted #portableapps ()
21:17:24 <pa_6710> is there any ay to imitate a CD for the suite?
21:18:25 <JohnTHaller> Nope. And like I said, that won't help for Vista, Windows 7 and later. For security, you should disable it on XP as well like most universities, offices, etc.
21:18:40 <JohnTHaller> You can have it autorun on your own PC with a helper app. We have a test one here:
21:18:41 <JohnTHaller> http://portableapps.com/node/13770
21:19:32 <JohnTHaller> If you stick that second one (with no GUI) somewhere on your hard drive and have Windows start it on Startup, your drive with PortableApps.com on it will autorun when you plug it in. You can also suppress Windows asking you what to do by holding shift while plugging it in.
21:20:16 <KookyMan> John, is there a way to make windows ask when you plug it in? Some windows installations no longer even ask on USBs.
21:20:16 *** JacobMastel has quit ("Miranda IM! Smaller, Faster, Easier. http://miranda-im.org")
21:20:39 <KookyMan> You can change the registry but, a manual way would work, like a Shift during insert.
21:20:54 <JohnTHaller> KookyMan: If it doesn't ask, the config is messed up. There are a couple autorun/autoplay repair tools including one from Microsoft that can fix it.
21:21:00 <SteveLamerton> KookyMan: Just a hunch, have you got VMWare installed, it screws up the config
21:21:14 <KookyMan> Never installed VMWare on this machine....
21:21:24 <KookyMan> It asks on CDs, just not USBs.

21:21:51 <Gizmokid2005> yeah
21:21:52 <KookyMan> I researched on the web and found there is registry entry, its a bitwise entry. It will tell windows which drives to ignore autoruns, and which ones not to.
21:21:59 <Gizmokid2005> I had VMWare iirc though...so that might've killed mine
21:22:24 <KookyMan> I think the new default is Ask only on CDs (for security.) but you can change it to ask on CDs & USB, or Just USB, None of the Above.
21:23:16 <pa_6710> soooo i guess no?
21:23:27 <JohnTHaller> did you read about the tool i just showed you
