00:49:30 <Chazz> wb ChrisMorgan
00:49:33 <Chazz> ^_^
00:49:54 <ChrisMorgan> I see nothing happened while I was away.
00:50:04 <SergentSiler> lol, very true
00:50:11 <Chazz> ChrisMorgan, oh, no, we just killed the logbot for a bit
00:50:26 <Gizmokid2005> ChrisMorgan: nope, not in the least
00:50:29 <ChrisMorgan> Except gluxon spoke sooth ;-)
00:50:33 <Chazz> lol
00:51:20 <ChrisMorgan> "Forsooth I will do that. I say sooth, sooth, sooth, sooth, sooth, sooth and sooth." "What manner of an idiot is this who keeps on saying sooth?" "Little does he know that I am a soothsayer!" ;-)
00:51:28 <Chazz> O_O
00:52:05 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: what will you do with Inkscape Portable for the heading? "Inkscape Portable 0.47 released by PortableApps.com & Inkscape.org"? And thanks again for the new splash, and being willing to change procedures :-)
00:52:37 <Gizmokid2005> I've REALLY gotta remember to close RSSOwl before I upgrade Java Portable...
00:52:38 <Gizmokid2005> 8sigh*
00:52:39 <Gizmokid2005> **
00:53:11 <ChrisMorgan> Hmm... wonder whose Java app will get released first ;-)
00:53:18 <Gizmokid2005> probably not mine
00:53:27 <Gizmokid2005> because they still haven't figured out how to stop using IE's cache.
00:53:30 * Chazz bets his nonexistant one will!
00:53:32 <Gizmokid2005> and it's not final yet
00:53:33 <ChrisMorgan> Ya :-(
00:53:42 <ChrisMorgan> I've got three in line, all using CPALT at the moment. GanttProject, Sweet Home 3D and Data Crow.
00:53:54 <ChrisMorgan> And to the best of my knowledge they're all perfect :-)
00:54:09 <Gizmokid2005> the only issues with mine I can't fix...
00:54:09 <Gizmokid2005> so
00:54:21 <ChrisMorgan> Yeah, it's a bit sad, that.
00:54:23 <Gizmokid2005> why he doesn't just change the app to use XULRunner is beyond me...
00:54:33 <Gizmokid2005> because he has a how-to on how to switch it from IE to XULRunner
00:54:47 *** SergentSiler is now known as Srgsiler|AFK
00:55:31 <ChrisMorgan> XULRunner would increase size quite a bit though... mebbe 15MB?
00:56:26 <Gizmokid2005> even so, 15MB on the typical flash drives these days?
00:56:30 <Gizmokid2005> isn't even a drop in the bucked
00:56:33 <Gizmokid2005> *bucket
00:56:42 <Gizmokid2005> if we were talking say, 50MB or something, then i'd wonder for sure

00:56:56 <KookyMan> Gizmokid2005 are you still around
00:57:00 <Gizmokid2005> KookyMan: yep
00:57:13 <KookyMan> How are you at troubleshooting?
00:57:16 * ChrisMorgan wonders how big BPBible will be with its new XUL interface.
00:57:21 <ChrisMorgan> Bigger than Firefox.
00:57:33 <Gizmokid2005> KookyMan: depends on what I'm troubleshooting, but usually not bad, why/
00:57:35 <ChrisMorgan> Because: XULRunner + XPCOM + PyXPCOM + SWORD API.
00:57:49 <KookyMan> Up for a bit of a challenge? :D (We can take it pvt)
00:58:05 <Gizmokid2005> KookyMan: pm
00:58:31 <Gizmokid2005> ChrisMorgan: it's 14.8MB for XULrunner
00:58:40 <ChrisMorgan> Fairly accurate :-)
00:58:45 <Gizmokid2005> but even so, to use Firefox rather than IE for a browsing engine
00:58:48 <ChrisMorgan> That was just an estimate... I didn't know really :-)
00:58:50 <Gizmokid2005> most people would probably pay that price.
00:58:51 <ChrisMorgan> Yes :-)
00:58:59 <ChrisMorgan> Call it $14.80 ;-)
00:59:04 <Gizmokid2005> ChrisMorgan: http://www.rssowl.org/node/219
01:00:13 <ChrisMorgan> Obviously you'd need different arguments to the register-global, but it should be easy enough to sort out.
01:00:22 <Gizmokid2005> yeah
01:01:02 * ChrisMorgan wonders whether XULRunner should be a CommonFiles thing (quite possible) or whether we should continue on with private builds (we would for Mozilla apps at least I expect)
01:01:17 <ChrisMorgan> I presume we'll continue with private builds.
01:01:24 <ChrisMorgan> Until we have 20 apps using the same thing :D
01:01:32 <Gizmokid2005> I would say for XULrunner, keep it private
01:01:42 <ChrisMorgan> For the moment at least.
01:01:43 <Gizmokid2005> but GTK, Java, and the like, CommonFiles would be an expected place for those.
01:01:47 <ChrisMorgan> GTK no.
01:01:56 <ChrisMorgan> GTK you get all sorts of troubles with version clashes.
01:02:01 <ChrisMorgan> Anyway, more later.
01:02:06 <ChrisMorgan> End of recess time for me.
01:02:16 <Chazz> g'bye ChrisMorgan
01:02:23 <ChrisMorgan> I may be back in just under 2 hours... or I may not.

01:16:45 <Gizmokid2005> I'm sure the bugs I used to see in OO have been fixed, but I saw some I couldn't deal with
01:16:49 <Gizmokid2005> Chazz: not...

01:59:16 <flacman> i've installed java in x:\Java and java launcher in x:\CommonFiles\javaLauncher
01:59:58 <Gizmokid2005> flacman: you didn't install them to the normal places as the launcher does?
02:00:17 <Gizmokid2005> ie - the launcher in X:\PortableApps\JavaPortableLauncher
02:00:27 <JohnTHaller> Java should be installed to X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java. Java Portable Launcher should be in X:\PortableApps\JavaPortableLauncher
02:00:27 <Gizmokid2005> and java in x:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java
02:01:29 <flacman> and i got an error "Java portable .. could not be found"... humm... i think i installed it the other way... java in \ and javaLauncher in \CommonFiles .... thx. i'll try and tell u

02:10:44 <JohnTHaller> CommonFiles is for stuff that multiple apps use. You can do an installer for an app. Or for a 'plugin' that goes in CommonFiles like Java.
02:11:00 <JohnTHaller> See 3rd paragraph: http://portableapps.com/development/portableapps.com_format#plugins
02:11:10 <Chazz> awesome, thanks
02:11:59 <Chazz> and, also, for the Perl Portable i'm working on, should it stuff Perl into CommonFiles, or leave it in a X:/PortableApps/PerlPortable/App/[insert other stuff here] location?
02:17:06 <JohnTHaller> Not sure. Is it gonna be used by multiple apps. And if so, will we have different Perl versions?
02:17:18 <JohnTHaller> (one of the reasons Perl can get annoying)

02:18:22 <JohnTHaller> I mean builds. There are different kinds of Perl compiled by different people, right?
02:18:28 <Chazz> oh, ya
02:18:42 <Chazz> although only like 2 major OSS ones for windows
02:18:48 <JohnTHaller> yeah, that needs to be considered. I think that warrants a wider conversation with the community
02:18:53 <JohnTHaller> Is one more common?
02:19:08 <JohnTHaller> It's annoying to have to deal with for an end user if they're not a Perl person.
02:19:21 <Chazz> well, for win32, ActivePerl (Freeware) is the only one that's rly used very much
02:19:47 <Chazz> Strawberry and Indigo are the OSS ones, and neither are rly /that/ popular :/
02:20:23 <Chazz> (although strawberry already has a fully portable, just not paf-compliant version :P )

02:55:36 <ChrisMorgan> Chazz, JohnTHaller: re. Perl Portable, while you could do a CommonFiles thing, a) there are few desktop Perl apps, and b) they are designed to use their own distributions and /may/ not like a common one.
02:56:14 <Chazz> ah, good point ChrisMorgan
02:56:44 <ChrisMorgan> (Mainly due to the "which distribution is it?" question which is the bane of most of these languages and toolkits)
02:57:44 <JohnTHaller> alright, I must be off to bed. gnight all

02:57:53 <Gizmokid2005> night JohnTHaller
02:58:20 <ChrisMorgan> As for Python, that one's an interesting one. There are a few ways of using Python in an application. One is compilation with py2exe, which is the most common distribution technique. Another is a simple pythonXX.dll file, used by some things but not many, and a third which is to include the standard distribution. This is what Blender and Inkscape do.
02:58:46 <Chazz> JohnTHaller, before you go, how shld i say that i'm doing it for PA.c when i contact ActiveState
02:59:02 <Chazz> ChrisMorgan, ah
02:59:32 <JohnTHaller> Maybe we should decide first. We can work with them to see what works best. If they want, they can talk to me, too
02:59:37 <ChrisMorgan> Then you've got problems with versions. The main ones around are 2.5, 2.6 and 3.0. 2.4 is still used occasionally (Bram's gVim 7.2 build is compiled against Python 2.4)
02:59:55 <Chazz> JohnTHaller, mkay

03:04:18 *** JohnTHaller has parted #portableapps ()
03:05:07 <ChrisMorgan> When a full Python distribution is used, there's the issue of extra libraries. They go in $INSTDIR\Lib (NSIS shorthand :P ) and (mostly but definitely not always) inside that, in Lib\site-packages. The way I see it, that's the only decent-sized problem with a CommonFiles Python distribution.
03:06:04 <ChrisMorgan> btw Chazz you'd be gratified to know that Inkscape includes a perl58.dll
03:06:10 <Chazz> :D
03:06:18 <Chazz> yay! :P
03:06:46 <ChrisMorgan> Blender includes some (don't know which), Inkscape includes some (e.g. lxml, numpy, PIL)
03:06:59 <ChrisMorgan> (Python libs that is)
03:07:03 <Chazz> ah
03:08:21 <ChrisMorgan> Then there's also $INSTDIR\scripts which can include scripts (not sure if they're necessary; I think they're for running from a command-line after adding to PATH)
03:08:43 <ChrisMorgan> Inkscape's python distribution is trimmed AMAP.
03:09:37 <ChrisMorgan> Inside Inkscape\python: python.exe, pythonw.exe, directories DLLs, Lib, Scripts.
03:09:43 <Chazz> oh
03:10:14 <ChrisMorgan> Now I think about it I'm not even sure if pythonw.exe is needed.
03:10:20 <ChrisMorgan> Could save 24 KB if not...
03:10:31 <Chazz> :o
03:11:16 <ChrisMorgan> python25.dll is included in $INSTDIR rather than $INSTDIR\python

19:04:59 <gluxon> John says the team is dead.
19:05:01 <gluxon> DEAD
19:05:02 <TimClark> dont do that gluxon
19:05:14 <gluxon> okay..
19:05:17 <TimClark> ask the members individually, not the team
19:05:29 <gluxon> Okay, where's the list?
19:05:29 <TimClark> ask folks that you know
19:05:34 <gluxon> of people.
19:05:36 <gluxon> on the team.
19:05:38 <TimClark> don't know
19:05:48 <gluxon> ...
19:05:55 <TimClark> but if there is not much interest you can't force folks
19:06:02 <MaienM> yes thats what I meant, ask members of the team to test it
19:06:02 <gluxon> what.
19:06:18 <gluxon> I know I can't force them :D
19:06:20 <TimClark> anyway, my point is , don't bug john about it, he has enough to do
19:06:42 <gluxon> I'm not that mean :D
19:06:42 <TimClark> i'm done
19:07:03 <gluxon> I know ChrisMorgan has tested it...
19:07:10 <gluxon> The only problem is with subversion.
19:07:14 <TimClark> you asked, and then linked to your own comment the next day :O that's bugging
19:07:17 <gluxon> But that's suppose to be a plugin.
19:07:47 <TimClark> anyway, as i said, i'm done, i really don't have time to go into the detail of the app
