The Firefox itself is Unicode aware and functions as I expected. But installer itself has had some problems, which is usual for non Unicode aware programs. So I saw many question points instead of Russian characters in it. 11:07:52 This is to do with the fact that we are still supporting Windows 98 where possible. 11:07:55 The root of this behaviour is probably this: installer uses some ANSI and not a Unicode functions for displaying of the strings. This way it’s also Win9x compatible, but on the Win2k and above one see, what I have seen. The solution is probably a small fork inside, which tells installer to use ANSI functions on Win9x and Unicode ones elsewhere. Is it possible? 11:08:08 As such we are using a non-Unicode version of NSIS. 11:08:17 Because it would be nice to have, especially because I think that the number of non Win9x installations is bigger, then a number of Win9x ones. And even if my case not isn’t a usual one, it’s probably not seldom. 11:08:43 Soon we're casting away Windows 98 support altogether, and just releasing a legacy version for Windows 98 and then no more, and switching to using the Unicode build of NSIS. 11:09:08 So you are using NSIS without any modification? 11:09:13 It's not practical to support both from inside the one installer; it's really got to be one or the other. 11:09:28 Currently we use NSIS 2.45 for all our builds. 11:09:40 When we drop Windows 98 support we'll use the NSIS-Unicode builds. 11:10:12 (Which are not official NSIS builds but are used by many installers, including for example Google ones as I understand it) 11:10:52 *** m-p{3} (i=unrealmp@elite.bshellz.pl) has joined #portableapps 11:11:21 Ok, if I do understand you correctly, you plan is: relace ANSI-NSIS agains Unicod-NSIS in some near future. I hnink, that win98 is reall ydead now days, even in internet cafes, but noone knows, what one can see in some locations, if you know what I mean 11:19:50 I regularly used Windows 98 machines in our school library until a couple of months ago when we *finally* got new machines there. 11:19:57 ChrisMorgan, will PApps still work on Win 2k? 11:20:06 Yes 11:20:10 good :D 11:20:53 FF itself runs onyl on W2k and above, and they probabyl will drop W2k on FF 3.6 as they done it with Win9x on FF3 before 11:21:16 There's no reason to drop 2000 support 11:21:39 Things only drop support for an OS if it doesn't have features they want enough to decide they need. 11:22:09 As in the cases of Firefox 3, OpenOffice.org 3 and Python 2.6 for starters 11:22:17 2000 rarely gets dropped. 11:22:39 Paint.NET dropped Windows 2000 support because there was some printing feature it didn't have which they wanted. 11:23:22 ok. pet us talk about Win2000 in 10 years, OK? 11:23:41 Yup! 11:24:04 Well, there is a reason to drop it. There's no more security updates for it.. 11:24:11 As you talked about dlls and s on, did you talk about launcher, installer all altogether? 11:24:17 m-p{3}: so? 11:24:29 m-p{3}, so? 11:24:46 pa_7125: the Installer is a separate program which uses NSIS to compile installers for our apps. 11:25:14 Well, corporations are dropping it on production environments just because of that. 11:25:33 The launchers are currently individual NSIS launchers, but are moving to having a central launcher for all apps, configured by an INI file. I'm working on that. 11:25:37 m-p{3}: so? 11:26:07 The operating system in itself will still run what you want, so you don't need to worry about it. Support for 2000 is normally incidental - you'd have to work to make it /not/ work on 2000. 11:27:25 wait a moment, ie6 was patched on w2k last week, so we still have some security updates for w2k 11:30:13 So you are using NSIS for both, for installers and launchers. And if Unicode NSIS will have some problems with win98, then it will have them inside any launcher and any installer, right? 11:30:17 *** ZeroA4 (n=Pergunte@unaffiliated/zeroa4) has joined #portableapps 11:30:18 nevermind, I 11:30:30 pa_7125: yes 11:30:33 thought it was this year, but it's in 2010. 11:31:15 and XP support runs till 2014 11:31:33 XP isn't a problem right now. 11:31:36 Though "reduced support" began a couple of months ago 11:31:52 2000 is getting close from being unsupported. 11:32:35 <@ChrisMorgan>Thank you; know I know a little bit more about PA internal. I have seen it many times; that some people get a regular version installed this way. And the portable one was still an old version. But I don’t think that it’s possible to redirect these auto updates to the other site. And on the other hand, the portable version will be available a little bit later then a non portable one. 12:07:55 As a general rule, never use inbuilt update. 12:08:54 Normally you can copy things in, but it's safer to wait for us. When John's not busy, he gets updates out within a very short time of the official release. 12:09:15 Yes I know, but it’s activated at default settings, and so it checks, then it asks and then it installs. And usual user isn’t as clever as I am. 12:09:49 In Firefox it is disabled by default. VLC it should be. 12:10:08 Some apps it can't be disabled, e.g. FileZilla, which only has pseudo-checking. 12:10:12 anyway, I'm off. 12:10:16 For real this time. 12:11:30 One solution is to disable these auto update altogether, but it’s not that good, because in worse case it leaves someone with an old version for years. Redirection to some other page (with “wait a couple of days” message, when there is now adapted version right now) would be better. 12:22:00 ChrisMorgan, i just posted! http://portableapps.com/node/20409 12:32:55 *** ChrisMorgan has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) 12:38:27 *** pi___ has quit ("Page closed") 13:47:52 *** WastePotato (n=WastePot@unaffiliated/wastepotato) has joined #portableapps 13:53:11 lol illegal: http://portableapps.com/node/16119#comment-125697 13:54:43 Bensawsome: Lawl. 13:58:05 *** abc528 has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) 14:01:47 *** dragonmage is now known as drag|out 14:04:11 *** kaeos (n=Miranda@84.76.55.235) has joined #portableapps 14:06:18 *** ZerFEr (n=ZerFEr@217.194.116.85.dsl.manitu.net) has joined #portableapps 14:35:26 *** Chazz is now known as daBomb|Not-Here 14:36:30 *** daBomb|Not-Here is now known as Chazz 14:36:31 *** Chazz has quit (Nick collision from services.) 14:43:59 *** Chazz (n=daBomb69@lol-i-am-the.endoftheinternet.org) has joined #portableapps 14:56:01 *** excid3 (n=Chris@dial-66-51-190-32.irtc.net) has joined #portableapps 15:29:34 congrats Chazz http://portableapps.com/node/20403 15:52:48 *** drag|out is now known as dragonmage 16:01:21 *** Gizmokid2005|AFK is now known as Gizmokid2005 16:02:22 *** Oni-Neoxes (n=Oni-Neox@unaffiliated/oni-neoxes) has joined #portableapps 16:04:30 ohai Oni-Neoxes 16:04:39 hello ZachThibeau, Oni-Neoxes, et al 16:04:51 hi Gizmokid2005 16:04:55 *** Chazz has quit ("Obai everybody!") 16:04:55 hello ZachThibeau, Gizmokid2005 16:15:48 *** Chazz (n=daBomb69@unaffiliated/dabomb69) has joined #portableapps 16:30:02 *** Oni-Neoxes has quit () 16:32:22 *** RetLaw (n=RetLaw@082-146-105-202.dyn.adsl.xs4all.be) has joined #portableapps 16:35:11 *** Oni-Neoxes (n=Oni-Neox@unaffiliated/oni-neoxes) has joined #portableapps 16:51:55 *** Oni-Neoxes has quit () 16:57:58 *** Gizmokid2010 (n=Gizmokid@75-134-112-128.dhcp.aldl.mi.charter.com) has joined #portableapps 16:58:33 *** Gizmokid2005 has quit (Nick collision from services.) 16:58:37 *** Gizmokid2010 is now known as Gizmokid2005 17:02:05 *** Chazz is now known as daBomb|Not-Here 17:02:15 *** daBomb|Not-Here is now known as Chazz 17:02:16 *** Chazz has quit (Nick collision from services.) 17:03:06 *** kaeos has quit () 17:03:24 *** Chazz (n=daBomb69@lol-i-am-the.endoftheinternet.org) has joined #portableapps 17:12:56 *** ZachThibeau has quit ("Leaving") 17:13:15 oh gawd.... http://portableapps.com/node/20418 17:14:03 spam! 17:14:12 yarly :/ 17:16:46 *** dragonmage is now known as drag|out 17:27:38 *** ZachThibeau (n=ZachThib@unaffiliated/zachthibeau) has joined #portableapps 17:31:21 *** Oni-Neoxes (n=Oni-Neox@unaffiliated/oni-neoxes) has joined #portableapps 17:33:09 *** ZachThibeau has quit ("Leaving") 17:37:16 *** prapper has quit ("Page closed") 18:05:26 *** WastePotato has quit (Connection timed out) 18:07:36 *** daBomb69 (n=daBomb69@unaffiliated/dabomb69) has joined #portableapps 18:07:38 *** daBomb69 has quit (Client Quit) 18:08:23 *** ZachThibeau (n=ZachThib@unaffiliated/zachthibeau) has joined #portableapps 18:29:15 *** gluxon (n=gluxon@c-71-234-109-246.hsd1.ct.comcast.net) has joined #portableapps 18:30:06 hey gluxon 18:33:17 hey... 18:33:27 Your middle name's really dabomb? 18:34:46 lol, no 18:37:00 okay... 18:37:07 Then why does it say that on facebook? 18:37:30 where? 18:39:35 Damian TheBomb Jovanovic 18:39:58 lol 18:40:02 thats not me :P 18:41:28 *** powerjuce (n=powerjuc@unaffiliated/powerjuce) has joined #portableapps 18:41:34 howdy powerjuce 18:41:59 hey ZachThibeau 18:42:11 whats up 18:42:16 nm here 18:42:24 cool 18:42:38 wat bout u? 18:43:01 ohh enjoying my prepaid access to msdn for 3 years :) 18:43:23 ? 18:43:25 what? 18:43:29 That's not you? 18:43:40 gluxon, no, not even close 18:44:13 ZachThibeau, is there anyone you /haven't/ told you have free msdn? :P 18:44:31 Chazz: yeah my parents for 1 :P 18:44:36 since they don't care 18:44:37 :P 18:44:37 powerjuce: hey, john was looking for you last night 18:44:38 heh, nice 18:45:23 oh yea, i am on vacation rite now 18:45:31 so i am not coming on as much as normal 18:45:40 ahh, yeah.
