00:00:05 <DaveDixonII> My dad now owes me $181.19
00:00:06 <DaveDixonII> :)
00:00:25 *** Jfied (n=Jerfied@ip24-255-31-224.tc.ph.cox.net) has joined #portableapps
00:04:03 * JacobMastel is now playing with QtWeb
00:04:33 <JacobMastel> I would use this on my flashdrive over FireFox
00:04:47 <ZachThibeau> JacobMastel: thats my app so don't think about making it portable :P
00:04:52 <JacobMastel> Smaller, so probably a bit speedier for flash mem
00:04:54 <JacobMastel> ZachThibeau: I know
00:04:57 <ZachThibeau> :P
00:05:00 <ZachThibeau> JacobMastel: http://zachthibeau.com/image/image/185.gif
00:05:14 * JacobMastel could start & finish before you release this :P
00:05:45 <ZachThibeau> JacobMastel: I'm going to package it now actually :P and hopefully nothing buggy will be found :)
00:05:59 <JohnTHaller> ZachThibeau: don't forget that we can set the start page to start.portableapps.com
00:06:02 <JacobMastel> Don't forget to use the new installer! :D
00:06:42 <ZachThibeau> JohnTHaller: thats what I am going to try. I forgot to impliment the DefaultData folder which houses a modified settings file with the homepage set as that
00:07:22 <JohnTHaller> and have it ask where to save downloads by default, too
00:07:44 <JohnTHaller> i'm torn on moving the bookmarks bar by default to the top. users will expect it to be there
00:07:47 <ZachThibeau> JohnTHaller: already set :P just need to get the launcher to copy the file from DefaultData folder
00:08:27 <ZachThibeau> and the bookmark bar is already moved to the top too (set by me in the modified settings folder just again need to have it moved on first run from DefaultData folder
00:08:35 <JacobMastel> Why
00:08:45 <JacobMastel> If people know of the app they will probably want it where it is
00:09:05 <ZachThibeau> JacobMastel: then they can move it themselves :)
00:09:18 <JacobMastel> True :-\
00:09:32 * JacobMastel notices that several of the shortcuts are the same as in FF
00:09:33 <JacobMastel> :D
00:09:52 <JohnTHaller> No one knows the app :-P
00:09:59 <JohnTHaller> And their default set of bookmarks is kinda useless
00:10:14 <JacobMastel> Not the youtube one :P
00:10:19 <ZachThibeau> JohnTHaller: I wiped most of them and left the ff one and added the PortableApps.com one too
00:10:25 <JohnTHaller> it is if we can't make the plugins portable
00:10:36 <JacobMastel> It's funny that they added in chrome and firefox...
00:10:55 <JohnTHaller> Don't wipe em. Move them to a folder within bookmarks called "QTWeb Bookmarks"
00:11:17 <ZachThibeau> ok
00:11:19 <JohnTHaller> on the bar, just have QTWeb as the first link, then PortableApps.com
00:11:28 <ZachThibeau> gotcha
00:11:37 <JacobMastel> Qt Doesn't do well with youtube...
00:11:44 <JohnTHaller> I think that'll keep all of em in there but make it more usable out of the box for people
00:11:59 * rmccue is in favour of leaving it as the original app is
00:12:12 <rmccue> It's not our job to change it :P
00:12:31 <ZachThibeau> I think I'll keep the first dt1 without plugins and try and work dt2 with plugins and see what I can do about that
00:12:53 <JohnTHaller> Well, we'll be changing the startup page, of course. And the appropriate settings to make it more portable. Normally, we'd add our bookmark to the end of the list on the bar, but the bar is kinda full of useless ones.
00:13:15 *** Jeremified has quit (Nick collision from services.)
00:13:18 *** Jfied is now known as Jeremified
00:13:50 <JohnTHaller> ZachThibeau: Set the launcher splash to 1200ms on with no fade (change the 100 to 0)
00:13:55 <ZachThibeau> ok
00:14:02 <rmccue> IMHO, we should make it portable and nothing else.
00:14:26 <JohnTHaller> we'd be changing the default start page on FF if we were allowed to
00:14:43 <ZachThibeau> JohnTHaller: something like this? newadvsplash::show /NOUNLOAD 1200 0 0 -1 /L
00:14:45 <JacobMastel> Why is Mozilla so protective?
00:14:46 <JohnTHaller> yea
00:14:52 <JacobMastel> Do they have an actual reason?
00:14:53 <JohnTHaller> it's revenue for them
00:15:10 <JohnTHaller> most of their revenue is from google searches... to the tune of ~$50m a year

00:33:58 <JacobMastel> I don't believe there is support for Java..JohnTHaller is that correct?
00:34:01 <JohnTHaller> With the installer I have you... it just works. You install it once, point it to your Firefox Portable install and it'll be there when you switch PCs.
00:34:21 <JohnTHaller> You can't currently have a portable Java within Firefox Portable due to the way Firefox's Java plugin works.

00:37:19 <pa_5505> how do I fix it?
00:38:24 <pa_5505> anyone?
00:38:25 <JohnTHaller> Ok, to review. You closed Firefox Portable and all Firefox windows. You ran the installer you downloaded, pointed it to your Firefox Portable directory, let it download and install. After it finished, you started Firefox Portable and that error came up somewhere?
00:39:09 <pa_5505> Yes, I did what the instructed to me to do. It told me
00:39:22 <pa_5505> to close the firefox so that it can install adobe flash
00:39:25 <JohnTHaller> So where did that error occur?
00:39:28 <pa_5505> it firefox
00:39:37 <JohnTHaller> where. is it a page. a popup error. what?
00:39:50 <pa_5505> when you try to give me this link http://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#plugins

01:36:04 <k7t> hmm.. say i were looking for a pre extracted _app* in which the folder was simply tar'd zipped ..etc. are there any places that provide those kinds of "portable" apps without the need of a "self extraction"
01:37:52 <k7t> sorry; let me rephrase my point... I'm looking for itunes that does not need to be extracted..
01:38:52 <alpha1beta> Itunes is a closed source app, we don't deal in those, however you may like songbird, which is much better than itunes, no itunes music store but it has several other music stores
01:39:58 <alpha1beta> and cooler looking to, but has an itunes skin if your into that look
01:40:21 <k7t> ok. well i guess i'm looking for a program that will let me use data transfer between my desktop and device(iTouch
01:40:25 <k7t> )
01:41:14 <alpha1beta> songbird will sync ipods, not sure about itouch and I phone rmccue or PatrickPatience might know
01:41:21 <KevinPorter> Right now, only iTunes can interface with the iPod touch.
01:41:43 <k7t> and so the legend is true.. :*(**
01:42:00 <kai_62656> btw, whats the command to "write" an env var?

01:42:50 <KevinPorter> k7t: Sadly. Apple has encrypted their drive so much that it's really difficult to sync to it. Plus there's their really weird folder structure.

01:43:55 <k7t> i dont have setenv... =(
01:43:55 <KevinPorter> k7t: Google iFunBox. You can transfer files to and from the iPod that way. No syncing though.

06:09:54 <PatrickPatience-> > (1:07:20 AM) rmccue: "Gay" is not gender-specific. - I think I made that clear.

15:32:55 <pa_3060> Thunderbird help...
15:33:09 <JohnTHaller> pa_3060: how can we help you
15:33:14 <pa_3060> My profile cannot be located in the portable Thunderbird app
15:33:24 <pa_3060> It's been working fine.
15:33:32 <pa_3060> I booted up today, and all mail was missing.
15:33:38 <pa_3060> Checked the file, it's not corrupt.
15:33:41 <pa_3060> My question
15:33:44 <JohnTHaller> So it was working. Were any changes made? Was the drive unsafely ejected?
15:33:57 <pa_3060> No - I have been pretty religious about that.
15:34:35 <JohnTHaller> Are you using a ThunderbirdPortable.ini config file manually (is there such a file in your X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable folder?
15:34:46 <pa_3060> I have been reading the profile help on Mozilla, but can't seem to determine how I would locate the profile manager in portable apps...
15:34:57 <pa_3060> Ah - good question. You know, I don't know...
15:35:00 <JohnTHaller> There is no profile manager with the portab,le version
15:35:10 <pa_3060> Got it. There's my ignorance :-)
15:35:24 <JohnTHaller> Ok, browse to X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable. What files are in there?
15:35:35 <JohnTHaller> (Replace X with the drive letter of your portable device)
15:36:09 <pa_3060> Currently: App, Data, Other, help.html, and ThunderbirdPortable.exe
15:36:35 <JohnTHaller> Ok, so no custom ini. Browse into Data and the profile.
15:37:00 <pa_3060> Okay I am in there
15:37:19 <JohnTHaller> What do you see in there... a bunch of files and folders... one of which is prefs.js?
15:37:32 <pa_3060> Yes - I do see the prefs.js
15:37:54 <JohnTHaller> Ok. So there's a profile there.
15:38:00 <pa_3060> Indeed.
15:38:08 <JohnTHaller> open prefs.js in notepad or Notepad++ Portable
15:38:11 <pa_3060> And, I can verify the mail accounts I have set up.
15:38:16 <pa_3060> Okay -
15:38:21 <JohnTHaller> You see them within prefs.js?
15:38:46 <pa_3060> I have opened the prefs.js in notepad.
15:38:59 <JohnTHaller> scroll through and see if you see settings for your email accounts
15:40:21 <pa_3060> From what I can tell, there are none of my mail accounts in the file.
15:40:33 <JohnTHaller> Ok. close that file.
15:40:58 <JohnTHaller> In that same profile folder, do you see any other prefs.js files? maybe with a .bak or -1 in the filename?
15:41:31 <pa_3060> no
15:42:07 <JohnTHaller> Ok. It seems that your prefs.js which is the main settings file in TB got corrupted and was recreated. Do you have a recent or semi-recent backup of your settings?
15:43:16 <pa_3060> No. I was actually getting around to doing a back-up today. I do have the Mail folder in the profile which contains what appear to be my archived messages.
15:43:37 <JohnTHaller> No backups at all?
15:43:59 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, your mail is still there. But the info on your accounts and all your settings are now gone.
15:44:00 <pa_3060> None.
15:44:10 <pa_3060> I can reconfigure those.
15:44:12 <JohnTHaller> you'll need to manually resetup all your mail accounts, settings, etc.
15:44:16 <pa_3060> That's not a big deal.
15:44:21 <pa_3060> Okay...
15:44:22 <JohnTHaller> Make a backup of your profile folder 1st, to be safe
15:44:50 <pa_3060> Got it.
15:45:29 <pa_3060> Do I simply reinstall Thunderbird, start over and then copy the mail folder into the new profile?
15:45:43 <JohnTHaller> Then recreate each email account the same way. You may need to move your mail folders around after, but the way TB works, each mail folder has essentially a folder on the file system in the profile\Mail directory. Within that are just folders and then text files with the emails in em. You can move them around. The *.msf files are index files used by TB, yuo can delete those if things get out of sync.
15:45:54 <JohnTHaller> No need to reinstall. Just start recreating em.
15:46:28 <pa_3060> I think I got it. One other question...
15:46:29 <JohnTHaller> You could reinstall over it if you'd like just to be sure that TB isn't corrupted at all, too.
15:46:34 <JohnTHaller> It won't affect your data.
15:46:49 <JohnTHaller> But do a backup of everything to the local PC first just to be safe since yuo've had this problem.
15:46:59 <pa_3060> Got it.
15:47:23 <JohnTHaller> Other question?
15:48:20 <pa_3060> Yeah - I think I got it - but, once I uninstall and reinstall TB (having backed-up the profile), should I delete any and all settings?
15:48:28 <pa_3060> i.e. the profile...
15:49:02 <JohnTHaller> You don't need to uninstall. Install it again over the top of itself. All PortableApps.com Format apps can do that to upgrade or fix issues.
15:49:31 <JohnTHaller> And your emails should be ok where they are and should reappear when you recreate the accounts. But take that backup just in case they don't so you can move them back in
15:50:18 <pa_3060> Got it. I will give it a try.
15:50:26 <pa_3060> Thanks for your help and we'll see what happens :-)
15:51:39 <JohnTHaller> Sure thing. Hope it works out easily for you/
15:52:50 <pa_3060> I might be back - but just so y'all know - this is terrific. I plan on donating as a result of the help and quality of the program...

22:59:21 <Bensawsome> lol nice MaienM|Anime :P
22:59:31 <kai_63656> Bensawsome: Great
22:59:37 <JohnTHaller> MaienM|Anime: it looks good from a quick scan. you write this from scracth?
22:59:40 <Bensawsome> cool ^_^
22:59:49 <MaienM|Anime> the module part, yes
22:59:57 <MaienM|Anime> the part in the Arc90 folder not
23:00:06 <JohnTHaller> nice. where is the arc90 part from?
23:00:09 <rmccue> JohnTHaller: If you really wanted to be safe, you could check both against an MD5 hash and a SHA1 hash.
23:00:11 <MaienM|Anime> although I made some small edits since it was slightly outdated
23:00:12 <Bensawsome> kai_63656: im also trying out gourmet :D
23:00:27 <kai_63656> :DD
23:00:33 <MaienM|Anime> if correct there is a license file in it with the link.....
23:01:00 <JohnTHaller> MaienM|Anime: yeah, it's BSD based
23:01:03 <Bensawsome> hey guys anyone know an easy way of tracking downloads?
23:01:07 <JohnTHaller> you should submit this to drupal.org
23:01:10 <rmccue> MaienM|Anime: And if you're not correct? :P

23:01:34 <MaienM|Anime> JohnTHaller: I might, although I will have to do some edits first
23:01:52 <Bensawsome> rmccue: mint? and can it be used with direct links? like kai is wondering cause he want to know how many downloads his portableapps gets :)
23:01:59 <MaienM|Anime> their coding guidelines (for the indentations and stuff) are different from mine
23:02:15 <rmccue> Bensawsome: http://haveamint.com/ - you have to pay for it, it's fairly cheap though.
23:02:20 <Bensawsome> :'(
23:02:34 <rmccue> I do a .htaccess redirect to count downloads.
23:02:43 <Bensawsome> 30 bucks... wow.... :'(
23:02:48 <Bensawsome> rmccue: wha? lol
23:02:55 <rmccue> JohnTHaller: How come I've never seen that email obfuscation thing before?
23:03:11 <JohnTHaller> dunno... never checked? it's pretty old
23:03:19 <rmccue> Bensawsome: It redirects any requests for *.exe, *.zip, etc. to Mint.
23:03:31 <rmccue> JohnTHaller: I've read everything on your site, never saw that linked.
23:03:47 <Bensawsome> hmmmmmm so wait how do they dl it? and is it more a backgreound program?
23:04:16 <MaienM|Anime> JohnTHaller: one thing to note though... if a user can post, but not without approval, (so it gets into the approval que), and he has the right to approve tweets..... he will not be able to approve his own. This is intentional, to prevent (like said in the orginal idea) drunk twittering and the like.
23:04:25 <rmccue> Bensawsome: That's just a Pepper (plugin) for it.

23:05:26 <JohnTHaller> rmccue|afk: it's linked from useful stuff
23:10:29 <powerjuce> about the release team, if u r on it can u work on your own apps?
23:10:49 <JohnTHaller> yeah. but it still takes multiple people to approve it
23:11:14 <powerjuce> hmm, what r u looking at for multiple people like 3 per app?
23:12:20 <JohnTHaller> prob 3 or 4 to approve from one level to the next
23:13:24 <powerjuce> huh sounds good, and can people speicalize in certain things?
23:13:49 <powerjuce> like one person be for code and another for diff oses
23:15:23 <JohnTHaller> if they want. we're gonna let people figure it out
23:15:48 <powerjuce> and last question do the apps still have to go thru u?
23:16:14 <powerjuce> from Dev Test to Final Release can it be done by just the release team?
23:16:38 <powerjuce> and then u get them to sign them
23:17:03 <JacobMastel-Busy> .pa Replacement icons 7-zip
23:17:07 <pabot> JacobMastel-Busy: Some replacement icons for 7zip - http://portableapps.com/node/10780
23:17:10 <JohnTHaller> i'm still involved with splash screens at the moment. but I'm making some templates for our themers to use for both photoshop and gimp to make their own. so it would only be me signing.
23:17:28 <powerjuce> JohnTHaller: ok cool, and btw wat software do u use to sign them?
23:18:39 <JohnTHaller> MS tools
23:18:46 <powerjuce> o ok
23:18:51 <JohnTHaller> Paid authenticode cert
