00:04:44 * JohnTHaller is tired of coding the installer update...
00:04:51 *** Espreon has quit ("No Ping reply in 90 seconds.")
00:04:54 <Oni-Neoxes> lol
00:05:30 <daBomb69> How much stuff is being changed in this installer?
00:05:49 *** Espreon (n=espreon@wesnoth/developer/espreon) has joined #portableapps
00:05:51 <pabot> Espreon is a lazy person who is awesome... If you give him a bottle of quality white tea good things will happen to you!
00:10:05 <JohnTHaller> the installer now excludes thumbs, makes including the installer source optional (off by default), will skip the welcome and directory selection screens when launched from the platform and do the install and display a finish screen, skip the welcome directory and finish screens when run from the updater and just install... with the exception of the component selection screen and I'm trying to automate that, too
00:10:30 <Oni-Neoxes> cool
00:10:44 <daBomb69> Cool :D
00:12:17 <powerjuce> wow
00:12:25 <powerjuce> all of this with nsis?
00:13:34 <JohnTHaller> yup
00:13:51 <Bensawsome> cool :D
00:13:57 <Oni-Neoxes> epic win
00:13:58 <Bensawsome> brb
00:13:58 <JohnTHaller> got all that working. working on the detection of what components were installed last time so I can automate it now.
00:14:56 <JohnTHaller> once done I'm gonna post it along with a new version of appcompactor which is a little simplified, skips files 4K or smaller (since it won't save us any on disk space and will slow use), detects if you pick say FirefoxPortable directory and switches to FirefoxPortable\App to avoid breaking launchers, etc
00:15:10 <powerjuce> JohnTHaller: btw can u add one little thing to it?
00:15:15 <JohnTHaller> what?
00:15:16 <powerjuce> i am not sure if this is there
00:15:28 <powerjuce> but if the installer cannot detect teh portableapps folder
00:15:38 <powerjuce> can it default the install to the current dir?
00:15:57 <powerjuce> its a little thing it really does not matter, but if u could consider that would be great
00:16:18 <JohnTHaller> No. That is purposely disabled so that users don't accidentally install to the wrong location.
00:16:34 <powerjuce> oh ok
00:16:37 <powerjuce> cool thanks
00:17:30 <powerjuce> i guess if people pick run, it would default to the temp directory then
00:17:32 <JohnTHaller> Hardly anyone install to the same directory the installer in... since this isn't like a regular self exctractor... except folks say beta testing Firefox Release Candidates... but those are a small minority overall. It's trivial to get it in the same directory (one line in NSIS) but was disabled to avoid confusion of most users.
00:17:54 <JohnTHaller> Make senes?
00:18:03 <JohnTHaller> And sense?
00:18:33 <powerjuce> lol yea
00:18:53 <powerjuce> and do we still endorse installing it to the harddrive first then moving it to the flashdrive?
00:20:22 <JohnTHaller> It's not endorsed. It's unnecessary as it doesn't gain you anything.
00:21:30 <powerjuce> ok good that is waht i thought cause when i ran preformance tests the transfer went faster when i directly installed to the harddrive then when u just copy it onto the hardrive
00:22:24 <powerjuce> however the only time it was faster via copying was when there were a lot of little files in the install folder and it was one of those crappy drives that cant handle a lot of small files
00:26:08 <JohnTHaller> ah
00:26:12 <JohnTHaller> ok, dinner, back in a bit

00:47:30 <pa_4236> i was wondering if there is a way to remove an app icon from portable apps w/o uninstalling the app?
00:47:47 <daBomb69> Yes
00:48:05 <pa_4236> basically, I have installed an app that has multiple .exe files but I only need one icon to show up in portagble apps

00:57:51 <ChrisMorgan> And with it I think MinGW Portable should be advanced so that they can be release together (they're most useful together)
01:00:37 <ChrisMorgan> If/when you're ready to make a splash screen for it, I linked to the largest size I could find over about 64x64, in its SVN repository, from the C::B P post
01:01:15 <ChrisMorgan> And I'm not sure how we should go, with the newest commits to SVN making APPDATA move-move unnecessary but no new release forthcoming.

04:37:12 <ChrisMorgan> I see that you're saying we should do a custom build of NSIS, how about Code::Blocks?
04:37:55 <JohnTHaller> what does nsis have to do with code::bloks?
04:38:19 <ChrisMorgan> I'm just observing that you are permitting a custom build to get something happening.
04:38:52 <ChrisMorgan> Did you note the comment on the C::BP page about the new APPDATA-only feature in C::B SVN?
04:39:16 <ChrisMorgan> If we had that then we could just do APPDATA redirecting instead of move-move.
04:39:22 <JohnTHaller> This is a very different situation. We may have to do a custom build to get ANY of our stuff working on Windows 7.

04:39:43 <JohnTHaller> ChrisMorgan: When is it supposed to come out?
04:39:59 <ChrisMorgan> The guy said probably not for at least a few months :-(
04:40:07 <ChrisMorgan> I'm not sure exactly when 8.02 came out
04:40:27 <ChrisMorgan> Hmm... still no comments on BPBible Portable 0.4.3 Pre-Release 1...
04:40:39 <JohnTHaller> Any chance he'd back port and do a quick patch release?
04:41:03 <ChrisMorgan> His patch should work perfectly on an 8.02 source distro.
04:41:27 <ChrisMorgan> I don't know what his role is in CB development, I don't know much about their team.
04:41:46 <ChrisMorgan> Maybe I could ask in their fora if they could do an official release for it?
04:42:35 <ChrisMorgan> Sounds like Doug Earhart is a Microsoft guy - "and *we* plan to use it in future versions as well." Interesting... :-)
04:43:32 <ChrisMorgan> Or we could just stay with move-move for CBP 8.02, but that's probably not as nice a solution.
04:43:55 <ChrisMorgan> .def code::blocks
04:43:55 <pabot> ChrisMorgan: code::blocks is a C++ IDE, available at http://portableapps.com/node/18671
04:44:06 <ChrisMorgan> Ah good, got my linky :-)
04:45:46 <JohnTHaller> ChrisMorgan: Yeah, he is
04:46:08 <ChrisMorgan> It'd also be good if they could fix up the issue with the /creation/ of %USERPROFILE%\codeblocks which I think I found the offending code for. Then, in fact, I don't think we'd even need to have it ExecWait and cleanup...
04:46:16 <JohnTHaller> That;s why I thanked him well. Since he obviously took the time to let us know
04:46:21 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: I presume then that you asked them about it?
04:46:39 <ChrisMorgan> Yeah, it is nice to know that they didn't take too much offense at MUMPS :P
04:47:17 <JohnTHaller> I started posting it a few places more publicly. I think my SlashDot comment caught his attention. Otherwise, I was gonna do full stories about it a PA.c and ask users to let others know.
04:47:30 <ChrisMorgan> ah
04:48:16 <ChrisMorgan> I think that BPBible Portable 0.4.3 official release should wait until you've published the next version of the installer. Is that due out in the next day or so?
04:49:03 <ChrisMorgan> Oh yeah, for some reason only German and English show up in the MUI_LANG_DLL_DISPLAY dropdown, even though Hungarian and Chinese (simplified and traditional) are enabled, and can be set via the platform.
04:49:12 <ChrisMorgan> Any ideas why that might be?
04:52:41 <JohnTHaller> Becasue your system can't display them. Proper codepage not set. This is non-Unicode still.
04:53:52 <ChrisMorgan> Ah. It was an XP SP3 machine, with extended language support on. I would have thought though that it could do them, or does it need the actual OS language to be set to it before it'll work?
04:54:43 <ChrisMorgan> Code::Blocks 8.02 did follow the version numbering standard used by Ubuntu... it was released on February 28, 2008.
04:56:17 *** TALKA has quit ("night all")
04:57:21 <JohnTHaller> With codepages, you set the OS to a default page and it can only display non-Unicode langs that work with that page, not others. So usually, it's English. So no Russian, Chinese, etc
04:57:48 <ChrisMorgan> Ah, OK.
04:58:12 <ChrisMorgan> Hungarian did look to display rather strangely when I used the platform to set it, I guess that would explain it.
04:59:18 <ChrisMorgan> Well, I've posted on our fora asking for possibly 8.02.1 http://portableapps.com/node/18671#comment-117417 and I guess that I'd better register and post on the Code::Blocks fora as well...
05:00:34 <ChrisMorgan> Good, biplab did actually have a thread for it at http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php/topic,10360.0.html
05:03:29 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: it's looking as though biplab's solution is somewhat "hacky" and some plugins may ignore it. Maybe for the moment we'd be better to move-move.

05:05:05 <JohnTHaller> ChrisMorgan: everybody else ok with it?
05:05:34 <ChrisMorgan> I think so.
05:05:55 <ChrisMorgan> I have only noticed one issue with CBP and that was just because I'd stuck the MinGW path on the end rather than the start of the PATH.
05:05:59 <JohnTHaller> bug the relese team to be sure
05:06:20 <ChrisMorgan> So far only Taffin and I have put things on the RT page about it.
05:06:25 <ChrisMorgan> We're both happy with it.
05:06:47 <ChrisMorgan> For MinGW Portable I've posted a list of things wrong with it, they're all pretty minor though which is good.
05:06:56 <ChrisMorgan> OK, thanks :-)
05:11:30 * ChrisMorgan should work on making a wxWidgets addon installer for Code::Blocks Portable
05:11:57 <ChrisMorgan> I think it should go in CodeBlocksPortable\App\wxWidgets.
05:12:22 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: that would then require me to add a PRESERVEDIRECTORY on the main installer, right?
05:12:37 <JohnTHaller> yup

19:16:17 <dbdii407> hola
19:16:21 <TimClark> that might help
19:16:25 <SteveLamerton> Hi JohnTHaller
19:16:57 <JohnTHaller> how goes it
19:17:22 <SteveLamerton> Not bad John, sorting out a couple of bugs, you?
19:17:24 <TimClark> Cool-Dude: are we done for now ?
19:18:46 <Cool-Dude> ja
19:18:50 <Cool-Dude> yes
19:19:34 <TimClark> Hello JohnTHaller , all is quiet
19:19:51 <JohnTHaller> There will be a lock in the upcoming PortableApps.com Platform that allows you to pretty solidly hide your files from others. It takes advantage of a couple things in Explorer to hide them. Even with hidden files visible, it will be difficult to get at them. And they'll be hidden by default on Mac/Linux. But they won't be secured and can be gotten at by someone with enough know-how.
19:20:28 <TimClark> Wow, how does it work
19:21:31 <Cool-Dude> thanks This is a good idea to get support no need to waite
19:21:37 <JohnTHaller> Well, it's hidden on exit so default Windows won't show it. And it uses a desktop.ini so that when you double-click it in Explorer you can't see the files. Plus specific changes to the directories to make them hidden in Mac and Linux by default.
19:22:10 *** Cool-Dude has quit ("http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client")
19:22:55 <TimClark> Not sure I understand "Hidden on exit " ???
19:23:10 <JohnTHaller> When you exit the Platform, it'll hide the PortableApps and Documents folders.

19:24:15 <JohnTHaller> Using the 4 methods to make it difficult to find. 1. Mark hidden (Windows). 2. Change name so hidden in Mac/Linux. 3. Desktop.ini to make printers folder associated. 4. Random name alteration to make it each devices hidden path unique
19:24:19 *** sar3th has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
19:24:42 <JohnTHaller> When you run StartPortableApps.exe next time, it'll ask you for your password and then do the opposite of those 4 steps.
19:25:01 <JohnTHaller> It'll be in 2.0. I have the code nearly done. Just working up a better password hash.
19:25:54 <JohnTHaller> Not because we're worried about someone guessing the password (getting at the files would be easier for the 1% of the population with the know how/determination) but more because some people use the same pass for evertything and we'd like to protect it a bit.
19:25:58 <Bensawsome> wow nice JohnTHaller :)
19:26:10 <TimClark> Will this still be considered security by obscurity
19:26:15 <JohnTHaller> Definitely
19:26:50 <JohnTHaller> It's pretty good obscurity... but it's definitely NOT encryption and will not be billed as such. When you enable it, it will give you a detailed explanation of that. :-)
19:26:57 <SteveLamerton> JohnTHaller: Why not use a standard crypto hash?
19:27:14 <JohnTHaller> I can't find solid Drupal code for it under a BSD license
19:27:40 <JohnTHaller> Actually, I haven't really looked. It's on the back burner until we get closer to 2.0. I'm worrying about 1.6 atm for a test release today

19:34:07 <SteveLamerton> JohnTHaller: You might want to take a look at this: http://www.cityinthesky.co.uk/cryptography.html MIT License which is the same as BSD I think? I would probably recommend MD5 or SHA-256/512 as they are the most well known hash systems
