02:30:27 <aan> hi
02:30:42 <aan> why do PortableApps cause the cursor to turn into hourglass for about 1.5 seconds?
02:30:55 <aan> or
02:30:58 <aan> thats the minimum
02:31:03 <daBomb69> aan, you probally are just using a sorta slow computer
02:31:05 <aan> up to 4 seconds
02:31:07 <aan> No
02:31:13 <aan> I'm using a 4.0ghz quad-core
02:31:21 <aan> with 12 processes running
02:31:23 <daBomb69> How much RAM?
02:31:28 <aan> 4gb
02:31:36 <daBomb69> ok
02:31:41 <daBomb69> What OS?
02:31:46 <aan> nLite
02:31:49 <aan> 130MB xp
02:31:56 <aan> it does this on every computer
02:32:00 <aan> and every portableapp
02:32:05 <aan> it's not my computer
02:32:11 <daBomb69> What kind of Flash drive?
02:32:17 <aan> no flash drive
02:32:26 <daBomb69> what r u running it from?
02:32:28 <aan> i dont use flash drives
02:32:33 <aan> from hard drive.
02:32:39 <daBomb69> Ok them
02:32:45 <daBomb69> *then
02:32:47 <daBomb69> So, what follder
02:32:49 <daBomb69> ?]
02:32:51 <aan> any folder.
02:33:00 <aan> Any folder, any portable app, any computer
02:33:07 <daBomb69> what AV?
02:33:11 <aan> unless the portable app is made by anybody besides portableapps.com
02:33:13 <aan> in which case
02:33:15 <aan> theres no delays
02:33:25 <daBomb69> what format are the other PAs?
02:33:26 <aan> AV = ?
02:33:32 <daBomb69> AV=AntiVirus
02:33:38 <aan> lol antivirus
02:33:40 <aan> i'm not an idiot
02:33:42 <aan> i dont run that
02:34:01 <daBomb69> U DON'T RUN AN ANTIVIRUS
02:34:03 <aan> antivirus just makes the computer slow
02:34:06 <aan> and does nothing
02:35:13 <daBomb69> Well, aan let me send you an easily detectable by AV virus, then lets see about the 'does nothing' part; but, if ur not running an AV, and running from HDD, w/ 4gb ram, 4 gh processor
02:35:23 <aan> i dont get viruses
02:35:26 <daBomb69> Do you run Antispyware?
02:35:31 <aan> of course not, i'm not a lamer
02:35:33 <aan> thats lamer stuff
02:35:51 <aan> if a antivirus was put on my computer
02:35:54 <aan> i'd format
02:36:26 <daBomb69> And if one wasn't, the virus would do that formatting for you
02:36:31 <aan> Nope
02:37:12 <aan> I use a 100MB xp disk, I run 6 services
02:37:20 <aan> 11 processes after boot
02:37:23 <aan> 37MB ram usage
02:38:15 <aan> Also
02:38:18 <aan> antivirus does nothing
02:38:23 <daBomb69> Orly?
02:38:40 <aan> Yes, check virustotal.com
02:38:54 <aan> commonly, only half of the AV's detect a given thing
02:39:54 <aan> i only use portablesoftware, so if I format C:\ and reinstall from Flash, I'm back to normal 100% in 10 minutes
02:40:12 <daBomb69> mhmm
02:40:18 <aan> i do that once a week
02:40:37 <daBomb69> And, y exactly do u format once a week?
02:40:46 <aan> its automated
02:40:49 <aan> it takes no effort
02:40:51 <aan> its nothing
02:40:54 <aan> its like running CCleaner
02:41:08 <daBomb69> srsly tho, y would u want 2?
02:41:58 <aan> its no big deal
02:42:04 <aan> i just change 1 flag in boot.ini
02:42:09 <aan> and it reformats automated and reinstalls
02:42:17 <daBomb69> nice
02:42:24 <aan> takes it's about 7 minutes
02:42:35 <aan> then
02:42:40 <aan> I have to run 1 .reg file
02:42:50 <aan> which sets my portable apps associations up
02:42:51 <aan> thats it.
02:43:11 <daBomb69> oh, nice
02:43:27 <aan> BUT ANYWays!
02:43:47 <aan> portableapps launcher has something in the NSIS which, when you disable splash screen, causes a Wait Cursor for N seconds
02:43:54 <daBomb69> PAs r prbly running slow cause of the wau the launcher works
02:44:06 <aan> well they open instantly
02:44:08 <aan> its just the cursor
02:44:25 <daBomb69> Then, might just be WinXP
02:45:46 <aan> the app is running
02:45:51 <aan> it just sets a wait cursor
02:45:58 <aan> which does nothing
02:46:12 <daBomb69> r u SURE the app's doing it, and not WinXP?
02:46:29 <aan> yep, i've been discussing it with my buddy, we're on AIM trying to fix it right now
02:46:32 <aan> it does it on both his computers
02:46:33 <aan> and both of mine
02:46:50 <aan> it does it on every portableapps.com app i've ever seen on any computer
02:47:02 <aan> some problem with the way they do the NSIS
02:49:09 <daBomb69> well, ur the first person to report this problem if is is happening, so

04:08:05 <aan> no i've never used that
04:08:10 <aan> i use other launchers.
04:08:12 <aan> ASuite
04:08:25 <aan> I'll describe the problem.
04:08:28 <aan> I have WinMergePortable.
04:08:29 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> but are you launching it from that or from the actual portable exe in windows explorer?
04:08:43 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> aan: I read about your problem
04:08:45 <aan> Gizmokid: Launching it from explorer, or from that, or from cmd console
04:09:04 <aan> any method of launching.
04:09:07 <aan> Here's what happens
04:09:23 <aan> WITH DisableSplashScreen=false
04:09:46 <aan> Busy cursor for 1 second while splash screen shows, disappears, app opens
04:09:56 <aan> WITH DisableSplashScreen=true
04:10:04 <aan> Open opens instantly, busy cursor for 5 seconds
04:10:09 *** Whibo has quit ()
04:10:28 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> the splash will hold the system for 2 seconds, that's built into the launcher...it shouldn't cause a busy cursor though.
04:10:45 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> does every pc you have tried this on run your "stripped" XP?
04:10:53 <aan> even non stripped XP's
04:11:01 <aan> i'm testing it in a VM
04:11:05 <aan> vanilla XP default fresh install
04:11:06 <aan> same thing
04:11:09 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> do you get the full hourglass, or just the hourglass under the cursor?
04:11:15 <aan> Partial hourglass
04:11:17 <aan> under cursor
04:11:32 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> that's typical...with about anything
04:11:36 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> as the system works...it happens.
04:11:43 <aan> However
04:11:49 <aan> with DisableSplashScreen=true
04:11:52 <aan> the app opens instantly
04:11:58 <aan> and the busy hourglass under cursor stays for 5 seconds
04:12:12 <aan> its not doing anything
04:12:21 <aan> the cpu as at 0%, the app is ready
04:12:26 <aan> i can click on stuff with the busy cursor
04:12:44 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> the busy cursor is not a busy cursor....it's a "Working in Background" cursor...and they vary highly
04:12:52 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> yet I'm unable to duplicate your issue with a fully loaded system
04:12:56 <aan> Ok, but the regular non-portableapps ones
04:12:58 <aan> open instantly too
04:13:00 <aan> with no busy cursor
04:13:15 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> what apps have you tried that this happens with?
04:13:24 <aan> every portableapps app
04:13:30 <aan> Like
04:13:32 <aan> a bunch of them
04:13:44 <aan> over the past year
04:14:15 <aan> i still use them, but my buddy wont use them cause of it
04:14:30 <aan> he created some crazy script to fix the hourglass
04:14:33 <aan> which runs in autohotkey
04:14:43 <aan> but I wont use that script
04:15:04 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> you can just change the hourglass cursor...what did he do in AHK to fix it?
04:15:16 <aan> detects if its portableapps program, and changes the cursor
04:15:17 <aan> heh
04:16:06 *** pa_5412 is now known as prapper
04:16:07 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> I'm not able to duplicate the issue...the times i get the busy in bg cursor, it's legit while the app is launching
04:16:17 <aan> did you disable splash?
04:16:20 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> yep.

04:17:22 <aan> WinMergePortable == opens instantly, busy cursor counting 1...2...3...4....5....
04:17:35 <aan> the program is ready, I am opening files during those 5 seconds
04:17:54 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> aan: you need to think of the launcher overhead...NSIS has to do file transactions in the background
04:17:58 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> you have to remember that.
04:18:11 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> you aren't just launching the application, you are actually launching a helper app also
04:18:14 <aan> do they happen while the app is running already?
04:18:34 <aan> my perception was that if the app is workable, the stuff has completed
04:18:43 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> if you've disabled services that are "BS" you could've inadvertently disabled something that NSIS depends on to move quickly.
04:18:52 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> aan: and it's possible, and probably true, depending on the app.
04:19:03 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> but NSIS works in a weird way, it's got quirks.
04:19:43 <aan> what could nsis possibly need service wise?
04:19:55 <aan> I run all the important services
04:19:58 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> who knows...
04:20:02 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> but every launcher runs a CRC check

04:21:13 <Guest52525> aan: yep. not that i regard it as too much of a problem :-) but it happens
04:21:39 <Guest52525> aan: except if the splash is enabled
04:21:43 <aan> right
04:21:45 <aan> exactly
04:21:48 <aan> no problem with splash enabled
04:21:52 <aan> no hourglass
04:21:53 <Guest52525> aan: yep
04:22:06 <Guest52525> aan: yep. exactly
04:22:45 <aan> see Gizmokid, this is why I dont think its a "in the background" thing
04:22:55 <aan> like you said NSIS needing to complete a bunch of stuff
04:22:59 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> aan: it's impossible to be otherwise...
04:23:02 <aan> cause theres no issue with splash enabled
04:23:08 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> if you got a full hourglass and no cursor, then I'd agree
04:23:18 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> but a "Working in background" cursor only happens if that's the case.
04:23:29 <aan> why doesnt it happen if i turn on the splash then?
04:23:36 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> like I said, I can't reproduce it...post it in the forums.
04:23:43 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> couldn't tell you.
04:23:52 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> I've gone through the launcher sources for those and can't find anything that would cause it.
04:24:07 <aan> what about all the Sleeps'
04:24:13 <aan> sleep 100, sleep 1000, sleep 100 sleep 100
04:24:33 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> where?
04:24:51 <aan> in WinMergePortable.nsi
04:25:10 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> that would cause it in that app. I don't have winmerge installed...I was checking FF and a few others.
04:26:09 <Gizmokid2005|AFK> I most certainly am unable to produce it with my RSSOwl launcher

15:06:38 <JohnTHaller> you need to read the documentation and look at the examples.
15:06:48 <JohnTHaller> and google helps. too
15:07:00 <JohnTHaller> alright, what I'm here for
15:07:13 <Gizmokid2005> I have been...but for whatever reason I can't get it to function how it /should/ presumably function.
15:07:18 <JohnTHaller> you guys know there's an issue with generating the header on certain PCs
15:07:24 <JohnTHaller> for the installer I mean\
15:08:24 <JohnTHaller> so I'm thinking about updating the spec to have a PNG version of the app icon in two sizes. 16 and 32. this would allow us to generate the header on all PCs regardless of display settings, etc. and it would allow for better icon display on Vista/Win7 with large fonts and in Wine.
15:08:35 <JohnTHaller> Only issue is it'll be a lil more work to create an app and package it
15:09:12 <Gizmokid2005> just adding the two icons?
15:10:11 <JohnTHaller> yea... it's only a lil more work packaging wise
15:10:27 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, I don't think that's much to do to add the better support. it's not hard to create icons anyways...
15:10:39 <Gizmokid2005> 16&32px or bit?
15:10:47 <JohnTHaller> you can use icofx and just export tyhe 16 and 32px icons to PNGs
15:11:36 <Gizmokid2005> right

15:19:38 <Gizmokid2005> hello SteveLamerton

15:20:22 <Gizmokid2005> good thing I haven't repackaged yet :)
15:20:31 <SteveLamerton> Hi JohnTHaller
15:21:21 <JohnTHaller> discussing an update to PAF and installer
15:21:49 <JohnTHaller> gonna add 16 and 32px PNGs to AppInfo for the appicon. 16 will be used by the menu. 32 will be used to generate the installer header. solves all our icon issues.
15:22:42 <SteveLamerton> Ahhh ok, is this to fix the ico issues? I just spotted a few Toucan issues have cropped up, they all seem quite minor though, which is good.
15:24:38 <JohnTHaller> It allows the installer generator to properly create the icon header for the app's installer even in Wine. And it allows the icons to display properly in the Menu even on Vista/Win7 with large icons (without cutting off icons) and in Wine without icons showing up in 16 color mode.
15:25:05 <SteveLamerton> Ahhh ok :)

21:36:57 <pa_4506> Hello. I had some files in my usb drive before installing PortableApps.. They are gone. How can I get them ????
21:39:37 <JohnTHaller> Hi pa_4506. What did you try and install from us? The Platform or Suite?
21:40:08 <pa_4506> thanks to answer.. I installed the platform
21:40:24 *** ve4jhj has quit ("gone for supper")
21:41:11 <JohnTHaller> Ok, is the platform on your drive now? (usually in the root directory you can see StartPortableApps.exe and a PortableApps and Documents folders)
21:41:49 <pa_4506> yes it is. I see that.
21:42:09 <JohnTHaller> Ok, what did you have on there before that was erased? What files and where were they?
21:42:57 <pa_4506> It was mainly powerpoint presentations in a folder called presentation in the root.
21:43:39 <JohnTHaller> Did you format your drive before instaling the platform?
21:44:44 <pa_4506> No... I had my files on my drive and after having installed the platform, my drive name changed and my files disappeared
21:46:01 <JohnTHaller> The drive name changed just from the autorun.inf file in the root directory. Windows uses it before it uses the name of the drive itself to display in Explorer. You can rename it back within the menu or edit autorun.inf directly to change it back.
21:47:10 <pa_4506> ok..thanks, and what about my files? Are they totally deleted ?
21:47:14 <JohnTHaller> The Platform installer doesn't delete any folders, it only creates the ones you see. There is a possibility if your drive had logical errors on it (due to an unsafe eject, shorted USB port, etc) that some files could have been corrupted when new ones from the platform were written. I'd suggest before doing anything else that you check the drive for errors.
21:47:58 <JohnTHaller> You can do that in Explorer by right-clicking the drive and selecting Properties. Then selecting the Tools tab and Check This Drive For Errors.
21:48:41 *** ZachThibeau is now known as ZachT|AFK
21:49:53 <JohnTHaller> Whether or not it finds errors, there may be something wrong or in the process of going wrong on the drive itself. You can try to recoved the files using a tool like PhotoRec. It's command line, but it works well at recovering deleted or damaged files off flash devices: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
21:51:17 <pa_4506> Ok.. thank you for your help... I will try to test this.
21:51:44 <JohnTHaller> Don't save anything new to the drive before going through these steps
21:52:19 <JohnTHaller> Each new thing altered could delete or corrupt something that is already on there. I'd start with backing up everything on the drive to start if it has anything still readable you want.
21:54:19 <pa_4506> Thanks a lot for these advices. I really hope I could get thes files back. Bye bye. thanks
21:54:58 <JohnTHaller> I hope so, too. Good luck.
