00:46:17 <powerjuce|away> hey guys do u kno of a linux backup server that allows you to...erm...back up a network?
00:48:28 <Gizmokid2005> powerjuce|away: your best bet is to backup each comp separately, I don't remember if there are any full-network backup tools, but I don't think so
00:49:00 <powerjuce|away> Gizmokid2005: i have 250 comps to back up... :'(
00:49:05 <powerjuce|away> not possible
00:49:22 <Gizmokid2005> of course it is, scheduled tasks ftw
00:49:29 <Gizmokid2005> that and driveimagexml or xcopy

00:50:04 <Gizmokid2005> Bacula is a set of Open Source, enterprise ready, computer programs that permit you (or the system administrator) to manage backup, recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of computers of different kinds. Bacula is relatively easy to use and efficient, while offering many advanced storage management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged files. In techn
00:50:09 <Gizmokid2005> In technical terms, it is an Open Source, enterprise ready, network based backup program.
00:50:33 <powerjuce|away> Gizmokid2005: i used to do it via schedule tasks, but... it failed when the new network security was set in place
00:52:32 <Gizmokid2005> then its a security failure...there shouldn't be any reason that security should interrupt with straigh backups
00:52:48 <Gizmokid2005> but try that app, that looks like it'll do exactly what you want
00:53:25 <powerjuce|away> Gizmokid2005: well it does not completly block the backup, only when that one computer pings mutiple computers does it block it
00:53:51 <Gizmokid2005> it's still a security failure, or an implementation failure..but I'm off. Check Bacula out.

02:28:57 <daBomb69> Hi rbrt13
02:36:16 <JohnTHaller> hangin in. busy
02:37:47 <daBomb69> Oh
02:39:34 <daBomb69> JohnTHaller, with the freeware thing, how is PA.c going to tell people about these freeware apps, are we like, just gonna stick a link to it in the related catagory, etc.?
02:40:50 <JohnTHaller> They're gonna get listings in the app directory soon
02:40:55 <daBomb69> ok
02:42:07 <daBomb69> So, should us forum crawlers start to stop saying "Can't do that cause it's not open source"?
02:43:35 <JohnTHaller> They can't yet promote in the forums. I'm gonna create a forum just for announcements for that.
02:44:30 <daBomb69> I mean, if someone were to ask in the Request forums "Can i have [closed source freeware app]?" What should we respond now?
02:44:45 <JohnTHaller> Well, we still need permission from the publisher.
02:44:59 <daBomb69> Ok
02:45:10 <JohnTHaller> Best option is to convince the publisher to package and release it themselves and promote it on their site
02:45:48 <daBomb69> k, thanks :)
02:51:16 <JohnTHaller> Second best is we get permission to do the portable version from them.
02:52:31 <daBomb69> And, if we get perms, do they/we/not PA.c have to host it?
02:54:35 <JohnTHaller> Prefer they do. But we can later this month (I'm getting DL hosting for em)
02:55:03 <daBomb69> Awesome :)
02:55:30 <JohnTHaller> Third best is launcher with our installer that'll download their app and extract it. The 0.91 PAF spec and installer will support this (downloads using local proxy settings, MD5 checks and extracting of zips and lzma-compressed installers).
02:56:24 <daBomb69> Ok, thrid best sounds rather complicated
02:57:02 <JohnTHaller> Not really. Still all INI-based. You can do it with some apps with about 4 INI lines. The code is a lil more complicated, but it'll already be done for you.
02:57:32 <daBomb69> Oh
02:57:34 <daBomb69> ok then
02:57:37 <daBomb69> :D
02:59:19 <JohnTHaller> Yeah. It uses the NSIS inetc plugin (like the updater does) for downloads. the md5 plugin. the nsis zip function for unzipping stuff (like XPIs used for the Flash plugin). and 7z for extracting installers (doesn't work with em all, but works with some).
02:59:40 <JohnTHaller> code's about 75% of the way there. gonna finish and post it tomorrow.
02:59:48 <daBomb69> Yay :D

03:13:55 <JohnTHaller> I'm thinking of changing the name of the PortableApps.com Installer to the PortableApps.com Packager

04:09:14 <Gizmokid2005> I haven't had ANY network outages...even when half the town lost power, I still have partial internet...it wasn't full speed, but it was still DSL speed...so I know they have some type of backup...I love them, Ir eally do.
04:10:00 <alpha1beta> everyone says comcast sucks, I rather like it, now when it fails, it fails hard, but normally it's pretty good
04:10:23 <Gizmokid2005> I used to have comcast, and it always failed...they were out in my neighborhood monthly, if not more often fixing something.
04:11:19 <alpha1beta> if you yell at them, they do fix stuff

04:13:39 <Gizmokid2005> haha yeah
04:13:41 <alpha1beta> she was being an idiot and making things up, she wouldn't listen til I yelled, she was giving out false into about next year's tablet PC's

04:14:11 <alpha1beta> 'they have webcams which students will be able to use to ask their teachers questions from home"
04:14:44 <Gizmokid2005> I take it they don't eh?
04:15:15 <alpha1beta> first off, the computers we got don't have webcams, 2nd we have a few USB ones in stock for students who will be out for extended periods of time, but they have to be installed and give out for that, on very rare cases only
04:15:36 <alpha1beta> she's a noob
04:15:37 <Gizmokid2005> ahh, figures
04:15:39 <Gizmokid2005> yeah
04:15:41 <Gizmokid2005> that happens
04:16:02 <alpha1beta> (this is every day...she leave tech saying "I feel stupid" half the time
04:18:48 <Gizmokid2005> I know how that goes
04:19:03 <Gizmokid2005> of course, when you have "IT" people who don't even know how to gather a mac address....
04:19:14 <alpha1beta> lol, nahh our IT is good
04:20:01 <alpha1beta> they're be better but we're overworked, 800 students, 100 teachers, totally 500 tablets and 120 winterms, and 30 desktops, for 2 IT and basically 4 kids
04:21:02 <alpha1beta> average 20 kids a day have issues with their tablets, 1 teacher, and 3 to 5 server or winterm issues
04:21:40 <Gizmokid2005> wow...WAY overworked, but that's the way it was at our school too, it was actually worse...we had 2 FT techs and 1 PT tech, no students, for both the HS and MS, which was over 1700 students, and probably over 500 desktops alone.
04:22:26 <alpha1beta> ouch, but desktops needs less than tablets, which are all lemons anyway and get dropped, throw, or even run over by a car
04:23:02 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, but these desktops, are failtops...about 1/3 are all macs, not new nice ones, old imacs with 400-500Mhz cpus
04:23:17 <Gizmokid2005> and the desktops weren't any better...you'd be lucky to find 1GHz cpus in anything other than the A/V lab.
04:23:19 <alpha1beta> ewww
04:23:32 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, plus they didn't know how to use macs...at all
04:25:21 <alpha1beta> lol, we got good stuff are far as specs, only 1 mac in the building, linux servers and tech lab (IT tech lab, not a computer lab) all linux, we have a OpenBSD router for the T1's, a ubuntu FOG machine, 2 broken 5000$ HD duplicators, 2 servers for inventory and a help desktop, running OCSI and GLPI, and all the tablet are running Italc now (italc.sf.net) it's awesome
04:26:01 <alpha1beta> tons of stuff, mostly because stuff breaks and we have to find a solution, or there's not money for the payware solution, so we go with the free, and usually better stuff
04:26:59 <Gizmokid2005> ahh very nicfe
04:27:01 <alpha1beta> .g GLPI

04:28:00 <alpha1beta> and it's all free :D
04:28:23 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, thats awesome :)

18:51:47 <Gizmokid2005> pa_8570: then it has to be comodo blocking it...it's notorious for blocking any app that doesn't reside in "ProgramFiles" which is where Outlook resides.

18:53:12 <Gizmokid2005> have you ensured that comodo is not blocking thunderbird? (ie - did you allow an exception?)

18:57:04 <pa_8570> is there anything else that would be causing for me to fail to send emails
18:57:18 <Gizmokid2005> outside of what we've done already, there's not anything else we can do....it's got to be some app on your PC blocking the traffic, you can telnet to the server, and outlook works....the only two things it could be are bad settings or an app blocking

20:48:59 <Gizmokid2005> (a quick aside - kenemt I imagine you mean JUST your bookmarks and/or history aren't saving?? If so, deleting the places.sqlite file in your profile will fix that, though it will clear out your history)
20:49:20 <JohnTHaller> and delete all your bookmarks, Gizmokid2005
20:49:32 <Gizmokid2005> JohnTHaller: no it doesn't.
20:49:35 <kenemt> it also does not save my homepage
20:50:16 <Gizmokid2005> JohnTHaller: typically it'll reload the most recent json bookmark backup that you have, which is made daily if there are any bookmark changes).
20:50:18 <JohnTHaller> Gizmokid2005: where do you think bookmarks are stored?
20:50:33 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, true and since he lost em, it won't matter
20:50:34 <Gizmokid2005> JohnTHaller: I know what i"m talking about...I JUST did this on friday.
20:50:37 <Gizmokid2005> right.
20:50:53 <Gizmokid2005> it'll check both the JSON and the bookmarks.html
20:51:02 <JohnTHaller> can you walk him through doing fixing the profile bits and checking the drive for errors?
20:51:06 <JohnTHaller> I gotta run for a bit.
20:51:09 <Gizmokid2005> sure
20:51:19 <Gizmokid2005> kenemt: you know how to get to your profile right?
20:51:42 <kenemt> no, sorry
20:51:43 <Gizmokid2005> your firefox profile that is
20:51:46 <JohnTHaller> Ok, kenemt, Gizmokid2005 is gonna walk you through rebuilding the corrupted bits. Be sure and check for errors first (or this may be for naught).
20:51:53 *** JohnTHaller has parted #portableapps ()
20:52:05 <kenemt> no sir, new to this
20:52:08 <Gizmokid2005> Ok, first off, open up my computer, and right-click on your USB drive and go to properties
20:52:28 <Gizmokid2005> it should bring up a properties window correct?
20:52:55 <kenemt> yes
20:53:15 *** ZerFEr has quit ()
20:53:19 <Gizmokid2005> ok, are you currently using any portableapps? Or is anything running from your flashdrive?
20:54:05 <kenemt> yes sir i'm using portable apps
20:54:43 <kenemt> If you e-mail me the steps maybe that would work.
20:54:50 <gluxon> Guys, I'm having the same problem, so It's more than one person. (just saying)
20:55:17 <Gizmokid2005> ok kenemt, you'll have to close them all for the next step
20:55:22 <Gizmokid2005> in the properties window, click on Tools
20:55:34 <Gizmokid2005> and do you see the button "Check Now..." ?
20:55:47 <kenemt> yes sir
20:56:14 <Gizmokid2005> ok, what I want you to do, is close EVERYTHING that's running from your drive, click that button, and let that run.
20:56:32 <Gizmokid2005> when it's finished, let it fix any errors that it finds, after that, come back in and I'll help you more
20:57:11 <kenemt> ok i goota go for know, thanks for all your help
20:57:17 <Gizmokid2005> yw kenemt
20:57:22 <Gizmokid2005> gluxon: have you tried that already?
20:57:53 *** kenemt has quit ("http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client")

20:58:54 <gluxon> Gizmokid2005: Yes.
20:58:57 <Gizmokid2005> ok
20:59:00 <gluxon> On gparted as well as windows.
20:59:09 <Gizmokid2005> gluxon: go to your profile folder, and delete places.sqlite
20:59:14 <Gizmokid2005> (with FF closed of course)
20:59:26 <Gizmokid2005> or rename it, if you prefer
20:59:26 <gluxon> k.
20:59:35 <Gizmokid2005> then start ff back up, and you should be good
20:59:47 <gluxon> done.
21:01:38 <gluxon> That didn't work.
21:01:49 <Gizmokid2005> what isn't it saving for you gluxon?
21:01:56 <gluxon> Pretty much everythign.
21:02:06 <Gizmokid2005> just the portable version?
21:02:16 <gluxon> Yes, it's just the portable version for some reason.
21:02:21 <gluxon> And it's the 3.1b3 if that matters.
21:02:33 <Gizmokid2005> it might...have you tried the latest stable?
21:02:41 <gluxon> No.
21:02:54 <gluxon> But the people in the forum post have reported that they have that same problem with 3.0.10
21:02:58 <Gizmokid2005> try it...3.1b3 has been left behind, it's out to 3.5 now
21:03:04 <Gizmokid2005> but john just hasn't packaged that
21:03:05 <gluxon> I know.
21:03:13 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, I know, but they could have corrupted profile parts or bad sectors....
21:03:25 <Gizmokid2005> you can just try copying out your whole profile and start from scratch
21:03:29 <Gizmokid2005> see if that does it
21:03:38 <Gizmokid2005> if it does, you have something in your profile that is corrupt
21:03:58 <gluxon> I doubt that.
21:04:10 <gluxon> Started happening when I updated from 3.1b2
21:04:14 <Gizmokid2005> you can't say for sure until you use a stable version and have proven it otherwise
21:04:21 <Gizmokid2005> then it's probably a beta issue.
21:04:34 <Gizmokid2005> that's why beta isn't for fulltime use...
21:04:37 <Gizmokid2005> it's a beta for a reason
21:06:41 <gluxon> The program is beta.
21:06:45 <gluxon> Not the launcher.
21:06:56 <Gizmokid2005> exactly...they both can blow up the profile
21:08:17 <gluxon> But If I restart it works, it's just once I close it.
21:14:13 <gluxon> Yep... I think it's only 3.1b3
21:14:21 <gluxon> 3.0.10 worked fine...
21:14:40 <Gizmokid2005> told.
21:14:44 <Gizmokid2005> *told you
21:14:46 <Gizmokid2005> beta will do that
21:15:06 <gluxon> except 3.0.10 won't connect to the Internet on my Vista (works on ubuntu with wine), so I'm forced to use 3.1b3
21:15:30 <ZachThibeau> well that sucks to be you then :P
21:15:49 <ZachThibeau> but odd behaviour indeed
