10:38:55 <ChrisMorgan> Really, it can be, in one shot, just about all of what we've already got, plus more.
10:39:22 <MaienM> amarok is quite popular, to give an example..... and I personally like K3b
10:39:34 <ChrisMorgan> Yeah, Amarok is one example.
10:40:20 <ChrisMorgan> The next best thing to Linux Portable... and much faster.

11:12:31 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: why?
11:12:46 <ChrisMorgan> Horusofoz: do you like KGoldrunner?
11:12:51 <sar3th> ChrisMorgan: because i don't want to mess with my currently smooth running system ;)
11:12:53 <ChrisMorgan> It's one of my favourite games :D
11:13:03 <Horusofoz> Havn't tried it yet
11:13:08 <Horusofoz> give a min
11:13:09 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: actually all it does is install the programs, and create start menu items.
11:13:17 <ChrisMorgan> Data gets stored in the user profile, I think.
11:13:28 <ChrisMorgan> Should be overridable with %KDEHOME% I understand.
11:13:29 <sar3th> really? i thought it was more like a shell replacement :O
11:13:32 <ChrisMorgan> No.
11:13:34 <ChrisMorgan> Not a bit of it.
11:13:36 <sar3th> cool :D
11:13:37 <ChrisMorgan> Just the progarms.
11:13:46 <ChrisMorgan> Which is why it's really a good candidate.
11:14:24 <sar3th> yeah :)
11:15:22 <sar3th> is their installer working again?
11:17:26 <ChrisMorgan> There were three install types, download only (I chose it first), install from local files, and ordinary install. I chose Download only as I wanted to keep the files, but it was broken (fixed in SVN now I believe); ordinary installation from the Internet does keep the files, so I did it. Then I had trouble with (non-sf) mirrors... it turned out that out of all the dozens of mirrors, only one worked :D

11:19:18 <ChrisMorgan> Feel free to join #kde-windows... and also the mailing list, I think I'll be joining it to discuss matters with them.
11:19:55 <Horusofoz> I hope there will be portable apps for Linux in the near future
11:20:08 <ChrisMorgan> There won't be at PortableApps.com.
11:20:21 <ChrisMorgan> It may happen eventually, but I'd say not for the next 3 years at least.
11:20:39 <ChrisMorgan> Ones for mac would be i.PortableApps.com or iPortableApps.com :P
11:21:18 <sar3th> i'd love to code the platform in qt4..unfortunately, i don't understand c++ :S
11:21:35 <ChrisMorgan> Why Qt?
11:22:18 <sar3th> idk..from the programs i had a look at, the qt-ones were pretty neat..and the sourcecode was well-readable, too
11:22:37 <ChrisMorgan> It just seemed a very random comment :P
11:22:45 <sar3th> apart from that, there is a great ide for developing qt, and anyone who wants to can contribute to it since it's open source :)
11:23:06 <Horusofoz> If you manage KDE for windows would that mean being able to use various KDE apps portable such as KPlato
11:23:10 <ChrisMorgan> All I don't like about Qt is the Trolltech registry keys :-)
11:23:18 <ChrisMorgan> Yuppity.
11:23:36 <sar3th> ChrisMorgan: registry keys are not an issue at linux, are they? ;)
11:23:50 <ChrisMorgan> No. You get other issues with it :-)
11:24:20 <sar3th> yeah, i know.however, iirc, you can create static binaries, so no need for installing qt on the host compy
11:24:28 <ChrisMorgan> One of these days I might start doing portable apps for linux... I'd want to do a loooot of background research first. You'd have issues with GNOME, KDE, XFCE apps, etc...
11:24:47 <ChrisMorgan> Oh yeah, that's right, that's how most Qt apps work.
11:25:50 <Horusofoz> Sorry not sure which comment was in response to my quesiton. If you successfully make a KDEWin Portable would one be able to use KDE apps like KPlato?
11:26:03 <ChrisMorgan> Yes
11:26:14 <Horusofoz> SWEET!!!
11:26:31 <Horusofoz> K what can an ubernoob do to help :)
11:26:44 <ChrisMorgan> They'd need compiling for Windows, but that's minor I believe.
11:27:27 <sar3th> i can update mingw portable, then you can use newer versions for compiling ;)
11:28:06 <ChrisMorgan> Yes. I think the important bit is negotiations with the kdewin team so that they do most of the work :P
11:28:13 <ChrisMorgan> Hope they don't read these logs :P ;-)
11:28:21 <sar3th> XD
11:28:31 <Horusofoz> :D
11:29:30 <ChrisMorgan> What'd be different is that we'd need a KDE app launcher in place of the start menu, and get their package manager to always put extract to App\KDE, and register apps in this app launcher (AutoHotkey possibly, C++/Qt as the manager is would be better) rather than the start menu.
11:29:43 <Horusofoz> Probably a dumb question but is it possible to also port the other branch of linux apps, Gnome? I realise my terminology is probably wrong but I'm sure you get the jist of what I'm saying
11:30:09 <ChrisMorgan> I don't think so. GTK+ is the equivalent of KDE for Gnome, and that's already there.
11:30:40 <ChrisMorgan> KDE is the Window Manager and the framework. For Gnome, you have the Gnome window manager, and the GTK framework.
11:30:57 <ChrisMorgan> XFCE is like KDE in its structure.
11:31:02 <sar3th> ChrisMorgan: does kde use qt? i remember something that they were somehow related...
11:31:06 <ChrisMorgan> There are fewer XFCE apps though.
11:31:09 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: yes
11:34:20 <sar3th> i think the launcher should be written in c++/qt or delphi, depending on whether we want cross-platform or not
11:34:48 <ChrisMorgan> It's KDE for Windows... no need for x-plat :P
11:34:57 <sar3th> then delphi ;)
11:35:02 <ChrisMorgan> C++/Qt.
11:35:08 <ChrisMorgan> Because the package manager is.
11:35:20 <sar3th> haven't seen it yet
11:35:33 <ChrisMorgan> KDE for Windows uses C++ and Qt. So if /they/ were to do the menu thing, they'd do it in Qt.
11:35:33 <sar3th> but c++/qt is a good choice
11:35:44 <sar3th> yeah, consistency :)
11:35:50 <ChrisMorgan> If /I/ were to do it, I'd do it in AutoHotkey because I don't have enough experience elsewhere :-(
11:36:00 <sar3th> and i'd use delphi >_>
11:36:10 <ChrisMorgan> wxPython just wouldn't cut it, too big.
11:36:14 <ChrisMorgan> You know delphi?
11:36:27 <sar3th> yeah..learned it 2 years at school
11:36:28 <ChrisMorgan> Why aren't you workin' on the platform, man!?
11:36:30 <sar3th> and at home, too
11:36:35 <ChrisMorgan> :)
11:36:55 <sar3th> idk..i wanted to get the sources once, but i was too lazy or something :-[

11:38:21 <sar3th> well...sf still has issues :(
11:39:24 <Horusofoz> Random comment I know but I'm still trippin on the idea of how made a KDEWin Portable would be :D

11:40:17 <ChrisMorgan> No
11:40:24 <ChrisMorgan> Or actually maybe I have.
11:40:26 <ChrisMorgan> I don't know.
11:40:36 <sar3th> i can show you some screenshots
11:40:42 <sar3th> if you'd like to see it :)
11:41:15 <Horusofoz> Be sweet for the apps and great for average users learning KDE in preparation for a future move to a KDE base distro
11:41:17 <ChrisMorgan> I think I can find some online :-)
11:42:13 <ChrisMorgan> Does look good... now I've got my own laptop maybe I'll start looking into Qt.
11:42:33 <ChrisMorgan> Dad looked into it for WaterSums, but at the time they didn't have the OS 4 branch :-(
11:42:42 <sar3th> the best is to download the sdk and leave it compiling the night
11:42:45 <ChrisMorgan> And they would've charged for commercial use :-(
11:43:07 <ChrisMorgan> compiling? What with? MinGW?
11:43:11 <sar3th> yep

11:44:00 <sar3th> yeah, exactly
11:44:27 <sar3th> you'll want the qt sdk for windows :) it includes the qt sources, documentation and the ide
11:45:08 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: OK, you've twisted my arm enough :-) I'll download it tomorrow morning and compile it with one core while I use the other for a perfectly normally "computing experience"... ;-)
11:45:20 <sar3th> oh wow, they released a newer version :O
