13:24:13 <Bensawsome> have you tried deleting them on another computer?
13:24:27 <pa_4494> I've tried to use Eraser, but all it did was duplicate my files with pidgin. It's on my flash drive.
13:24:44 <Bensawsome> hmmm

13:25:27 <Bensawsome> hmmm
13:25:33 <Bensawsome> well
13:25:41 <Bensawsome> it could be a few things
13:25:50 <pa_4494> Is there something I can do, just to delete the files that are causing the problem and overide the whole "corrupted" thing?
13:25:51 <Bensawsome> it could be something is screwy with the computer
13:25:57 <Bensawsome> something with the usb port
13:25:59 <pa_4494> I doubt it.
13:25:59 <Bensawsome> or the usb drive
13:26:01 <pa_4494> Maybe.
13:26:02 <Bensawsome> like i said
13:26:09 <Bensawsome> have you tried it on another computer?
13:26:17 <pa_4494> Yes.
13:26:25 <Bensawsome> ok so it does the same thing on both...
13:26:36 <Bensawsome> then probably something is screwed up with the drive
13:26:45 <pa_4494> Is there a program that will delete the files regardless of it being corrupt?
13:26:52 <Bensawsome> well
13:26:58 <Bensawsome> since you cant even reformat it
13:27:05 <Bensawsome> its something with the usb drive
13:27:22 <Bensawsome> and you tried reformatting it on another computer too?
13:27:32 <pa_4494> I can delete files except for the pidgin ones, and pidgin used to be my favorite aim client. I've severely lost confidence in it now.
13:27:50 <Bensawsome> hmmm
13:28:08 <Bensawsome> well it isnt pidgin if you cant even reformat the drive
13:28:08 <Bensawsome> oh
13:28:10 <Bensawsome> duh
13:28:12 <Bensawsome> im stupid
13:28:20 <Bensawsome> have you tried doing a chkdsk on it?
13:28:28 <pa_4494> No
13:28:31 <Bensawsome> ok
13:28:47 <Bensawsome> go Start > Run
13:28:48 <MaienM> pa_4494: does your drive have a "read-only" mode?
13:29:02 <MaienM> like, a physical switch on it
13:29:03 <pa_4494> I don't think so.
13:29:08 <Bensawsome> MaienM he said he could delete all files except for pidgin ones
13:29:20 <pa_4494> ...

13:29:26 <Bensawsome> ya
13:29:28 <Bensawsome> thanks though
13:29:32 <Bensawsome> but ya

13:29:40 <Bensawsome> type in
13:29:41 <Bensawsome> cmd
13:29:44 <Bensawsome> press enter
13:30:25 <pa_4494> I don't have a run command on the computer I'm using. Is there another way?

13:31:05 <Bensawsome> do you have access to any computer which has admin rights?
13:31:09 <pa_4494> Should I just delete files and return the drive?
13:31:11 <Bensawsome> err which you have admin rights on
13:31:28 <pa_4494> My home computer, but thats along ways away.
13:31:33 <Bensawsome> oh :(
13:31:36 <Bensawsome> hmmm
13:31:37 <Bensawsome> well
13:31:45 <Bensawsome> you have a windows key on your computer?
13:31:52 <pa_4494> Yeah.
13:31:54 <Bensawsome> err keyboard
13:31:56 <Bensawsome> cool
13:32:06 <Bensawsome> press that key and R at the same time
13:32:12 <Bensawsome> and it might open the run dialog
13:32:15 <pa_4494> So, should I just return the drive?
13:32:19 <Bensawsome> hmmm
13:32:25 <Bensawsome> might be a good bet :/
13:32:25 <pa_4494> Nope, it did not.
13:32:29 <Bensawsome> but
13:32:30 <Bensawsome> if oyu can
13:32:34 <pa_4494> I can.
13:32:39 <Bensawsome> do chkdsk on the drive first
13:32:42 <pa_4494> So, why can't pidgin files be deleted?
13:32:49 <Bensawsome> really... im not sure
13:32:54 <Bensawsome> it could be any number of reasons
13:33:01 <Bensawsome> bad chip on the drive
13:33:10 <Bensawsome> just something screwed up with the formatting...
13:33:13 <pa_4494> What did MaienM think?
13:33:30 <Bensawsome> he thought you had a write protection switch on it
13:33:37 <Bensawsome> a physical switch on the drive
13:33:43 <Bensawsome> so it can only read from the drive
13:33:49 <Bensawsome> but since you can delete other files
13:33:58 <Bensawsome> that isnt the problem :/
13:34:28 <pa_4494> Again, do you know of a program that I can use to simply remove those files? There has to be one out there.
13:34:33 <Bensawsome> but ya. try chkdsk if you can first, and if that doesnt work or you just wanna then return it
13:34:54 <Bensawsome> pa_4494 if eraser hasnt i dunno of any that can... there arent programs for everything unfortunately
13:35:11 <Bensawsome> shoot
13:35:18 <Bensawsome> i started chkdsk on my C drive XD
13:35:20 <Bensawsome> lol
13:35:25 <Bensawsome> now my computer is lagging :?
13:35:28 <Bensawsome> *;/
13:36:15 <Bensawsome> but ya... chkdsk and returning it are the only options i see here unfortunately...
13:36:25 <pa_4494> What would that do?
13:36:41 <Bensawsome> chkdsk basically scans the drive for errors and attempts to fix them
13:36:48 <Bensawsome> usually its pretty succesful
13:37:01 <Bensawsome> so that would probably be your best bet
13:37:24 <pa_4494> How often will that work?
13:37:35 <Bensawsome> well
13:37:37 <Bensawsome> for me
13:37:46 <Bensawsome> its worked almost every time from what i can remember
13:38:04 <Bensawsome> so ya
13:38:24 <Bensawsome> if you can get to a computer where you have administrator rights, try chkdsk :)
13:38:39 <Bensawsome> to get it to scan your drive
13:38:49 <Bensawsome> you type: chkdsk X
13:38:58 <Bensawsome> where X is the drive letter of your USB Drive
13:40:13 <pa_4494> Do you know of an app that i can use that is like the run command?
13:41:55 <Bensawsome> well
13:42:00 <Bensawsome> basically you have to open up cmd
13:42:21 <pa_4494> Can I use Aim on the portable thingy?
13:42:29 <Bensawsome> like the aim client?
13:42:33 <pa_4494> Yeah.
13:42:36 <Bensawsome> no you cant
13:42:43 <Bensawsome> its not portable
13:42:49 <pa_4494> I don't really trust pidgin anymore if it's going to do that stuff.
13:42:59 <Bensawsome> no
13:43:01 <Bensawsome> i can tell you
13:43:01 <pa_4494> I was able to install ccleaner on it.
13:43:06 <Bensawsome> pidgin didnt do this
13:43:16 <Bensawsome> do you eject your usb drive correctly?
13:43:19 <pa_4494> Well, pidgin decided not to run.
13:43:26 <pa_4494> probably not.
13:43:33 <Bensawsome> then thats why its corrupt
13:43:38 <Bensawsome> you just pull it out?
13:43:45 <pa_4494> Yeah.
13:43:48 <Bensawsome> ok
13:43:49 <Bensawsome> then ya
13:43:57 <Bensawsome> pidgin prbly didnt finish exiting
13:43:59 <pa_4494> that never happened to me before though.
13:44:00 <Bensawsome> you pulled it out
13:44:03 <Bensawsome> which corrupted it
13:44:10 <Bensawsome> well it doesnt always happen
13:44:33 <Bensawsome> but ya... make sure you safely eject first

18:07:18 <Sparksman> hello guys! anybody here with some knowledge about amsn portable?
18:10:13 <Gizmokid2005> Sparksman: probably not, you can ask, but you'll most likely have to post your question in the forums.
18:17:03 <Sparksman> mhm, I see... well, in short, I installed and configurated amsn portable on my home machine (Vista SP2, german, admin rights), works fine so far! plugging in the usb stick at my office pc (XP Prof. SP3, german, admin rights), amsn portable starts w/o any fault, all settings and behavior normal. however, when I plug the usb stick to my home pc again and start amsn portable, it starts like fresh installed. all settings gone, default
18:19:22 <Sparksman> oh, I've forgotten, the drive letter of the usb stick is different at home (Z:, manually set with win drive managment) and in the office (D:, set by win automatically). don't know if this is important too or not...
18:19:48 <Gizmokid2005> the launcher should automatically take care of that...that's the point of what we do.
18:19:50 <Gizmokid2005> that's odd...
18:20:04 <Gizmokid2005> when you run it at work, it shuts down properly right
18:20:08 <Gizmokid2005> and without errors?
18:20:16 <Gizmokid2005> and you safely remove your drive in windows right?
18:21:00 *** Roamer (n=Roamer@64-191-139-156.service.qx.net) has joined #portableapps
18:21:00 <GizmoBot> Roamer is addicted to cracked.com
18:25:00 <Sparksman> yeah, closing amsn with menu "close", closing w/o any error, and removing the usb stick with the windows usb remove tool (RM click on icon, selecting "remove the usb stick", no errors. the same at home too. and yeah, I've a whole bunch of PA tools installed on my usb stick so far, all of them working fine. so I'm a liitle bit worried why this new PA tool doesn't work like expected...
18:25:19 <Gizmokid2005> Sparksman: ok...
18:25:37 <Gizmokid2005> when you get back from work, and plug it in on your home computer, is there anything in your \Data\ folder?
18:25:51 <Gizmokid2005> in AMSNPortable\Data\
18:27:07 <Sparksman> yes. folder "settings", containing folder "amsn" and "aMSNPortableSettings.ini". folder "amsn" contains a lot of more folders aso.
18:27:13 <Gizmokid2005> Hmmm
18:27:14 <Gizmokid2005> ok
18:27:28 <Gizmokid2005> give me a moment Sparksman
18:28:22 <Sparksman> yoh, no prob man. maybe we should freeze the discusion by now and I'm looking tomorrow how's the amsn behavior at the office pc...
18:29:14 <Gizmokid2005> it works fine when you go from home to work, but not back, right?
18:29:20 <Gizmokid2005> or do you use a different version at home first?
18:29:22 <Sparksman> yes
18:29:44 <Gizmokid2005> yes?
18:29:49 <Sparksman> no! it always the same version I'm starting
18:29:53 <Gizmokid2005> Ok
18:30:00 <Gizmokid2005> but it works from home to work, but not work to home...
18:30:01 <Gizmokid2005> odd
18:30:14 <Sparksman> hehe, don't tell me...
18:32:51 <Gizmokid2005> Sparksman: Make a post in the forums, and what you should do, is copy the aMSNPortableSettings.ini file contents at home after you close it, and then at work after you close it, or at home after you've been at work before you open it...and then put both of those in that too
18:32:57 <Gizmokid2005> that should help us figure out what's going on.
18:36:12 <Sparksman> ok, will do! well, the only reason I moved to amsn portable was, I know amsn from ubuntu very well, and I was annoyed using separate M$ messenger at home and office, and therefore separated logs and chat logs too... so yeah... but I'll post the sitch. hopefully there's a solution soon. thx for time. cu! bye Sparksman
