03:22:55 <pa_4365> thx...i'll give it my best shot. portable apps seems to be better than u3 so i'd like to stick with it.

13:17:31 <pa_5136> Hello. I'm using LiberKey as a main portable apps provider, but would like also try to check PA solution. Some time ago when I've been trying it, it required to check manually for an update for every application, something that LiberKey does automatically. My question is, is I will try the Suite, not separate programs, will it check for updates for all programs from the Suite on start?
13:23:32 <ChrisMorgan> No
13:23:53 <ChrisMorgan> The updater is coming in the next release, but you'll still have to run it manually.
13:24:22 <ChrisMorgan> Are you aware that LiberKey is a regular law breaker?
13:24:42 <ChrisMorgan> Personally I don't like anything which goes connecting to the internet when it feels like it. I prefer to look for updates manually.
13:26:01 <MaienM|Sleep> I guess that having an option for it to check for updates on startup or anything might be convenient for some people though.... I wonder if that has been requested yet.

21:55:37 <gluxon> ?
21:55:52 <sar3th> pa_5394: you usually use a special launcher to handle the drive letter-related questions
21:56:14 <ptmb> eclipse portable does so automatically because of the special launcher developed by gluxon, for example
21:56:15 <sar3th> like find out on which drive we are, and launch the exe with --data-dir=X:\myapp\Data
21:56:19 <gluxon> Wait, did you download Eclipse from eclipse.org or the PortableApps.com edition?
21:57:02 <pa_5394> I have several applications that will run standalone (Tomcat, MySql, and Eclipse) which I would like to setup to execute from the menus.
21:57:13 <gluxon> oh.
21:57:36 <sar3th> pa_5394: if they require special treatment in order to work on your flash drive, you need a launcher to handle those things for you
21:57:39 *** gluxon has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
21:57:46 <pa_5394> none actually require any windows setup but need environment variables
21:58:03 <sar3th> you can set those with your launcher then :)
21:58:42 <pa_5394> I'm a newbee to portaleapps...what would my laucher be?
21:58:58 <ptmb> pa_5394, general rule, such applications have the user data stored somewhere, and if there isn't a command line argument for that, the developers create a launcher that detects the custom folders, files, and regestry entries in which these programs store their data and make sure that, a) the portable data is saved on the pen, and b) the app doesn't interfere with local app's data
21:59:24 <ptmb> when I say pen, I mean flash drive or usb drive

23:11:27 <ptmb> we should have a place where to teach people how to do support and save pre-made answers to commonly questioned things
23:12:12 <ptmb> so I think a special page or site should be made, specifically by moderators, developers, and those who usually give support, on how to properly give support and all of such things
23:12:45 <ptmb> something like a "PortableApps.com Support Training Page/Site"
23:12:57 <MaienM> iirc, JTH was thinking of making a wiki on the site, which would be perfect for this
23:13:03 <MaienM> I might be wrong though
23:13:34 <TimClark> I know i have bookmarks to the most common questions that i can deal with
23:14:01 <ZachThibeau> which is general a good idea everyone should have handy if you are going to be participating in support
23:14:12 *** Ben|Adium (n=Bensawso@c-67-186-183-156.hsd1.vt.comcast.net) has joined #portableapps
23:14:23 <sar3th> i think it's a good idea, too
23:14:30 <ptmb> TimClark, that is great, but everyone should have those links available to them, and with some sort of canned response that explains all
23:14:50 <ptmb> that is why I think we should do something like that
23:15:05 <TimClark> ptmb: eveyone can have them , they just need to make them till we get a central spot
23:15:30 <TimClark> ptmb: i agree, but someone has to make and maintain it
23:15:37 <ptmb> TimClark, I agree
23:16:00 <ZachThibeau> I could host a general page on my blog at zachthibeau.com until a proper page on portableapps.com has been made
23:16:17 <ptmb> ZachThibeau, I think something more than just a page is necessary
23:16:58 <ZachThibeau> but the page can be a whiteboard until something can be done, or best of all something I've been meaning to do is setup a wiki on my site anyways
23:17:13 <ptmb> I think that works
23:17:31 <ZachThibeau> this way once the time comes you could copy and paste the data into portableapps.com once JTH gets to the idea
23:18:36 <ptmb> oh, sar3th, sorry to bother you, but when you are available, can you write that article on how to show bat files on the menu on the development forums?
23:18:43 <ZachThibeau> I'm setting up the wiki now, maybe we should get some volunteers to help contribute ideas to the wiki and generate a rough draft
23:19:06 <sar3th> ptmb: i'm working on it right now
23:19:08 <ptmb> i think we need a page for how to manage support
23:19:25 <ptmb> and then a page with a list linking to several canned responses
23:20:05 <ZachThibeau> well in a nutshell that was the direction I was going for :P guess I was misunderstood
23:20:10 <ptmb> we could grab some discussions from the logs so we know some questions
23:20:14 <ZachThibeau> thanks for clearing it up anyways
23:20:19 <ZachThibeau> and agreed
23:20:34 <ZachThibeau> anyways I'm uploading mediawiki files to my server now
23:20:54 *** vicc_portugal has quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
23:20:57 <ptmb> and we should define which kind of support we give (if we give info about 3rd pary apps and such...)
23:21:28 <sar3th> and tools which we know can lead to improper results, like bat2exe solutions..

23:22:23 <ptmb> I agree with sar3th
23:22:39 <ZachThibeau> if you guys want to get started on collecting data I'll let you know once the wiki is setup and then all you would have to do is paste what you have
23:22:47 <ptmb> ok ZachThibeau
23:23:37 <ptmb> one thing I want to point out is that this site (http://cubegames.net/development/faq) has some great questions and answers, but some are outdated
23:24:26 <ZachThibeau> I think to avoid the unfortunete but always an issue of wiki spam I may make users register to help prevent it from occuring
23:24:54 <ptmb> I agree
23:24:58 <daBomb69> ZachThibeau, agreed.
23:25:12 <daBomb69> Could we combine forum registration and Wiki registration perhaps?
23:25:34 <ptmb> daBomb69, this is a wiki made by ZachThibeau, so no integration
23:25:36 <MaienM> no, ZachThibeau's site is not tied to the pa forum.
23:25:57 <daBomb69> ptmb, I mean, if we get it onto PA.c
23:25:59 <ZachThibeau> this is just a sandbox for once john decides to make the official pa wiki
23:26:06 <ZachThibeau> thing
23:26:34 <MaienM> if JTH ever decides to make a wiki on pa.c it will probably be linked to the forum/site registrations, yes
23:26:46 <daBomb69> ah, ok.
23:28:25 <ZachThibeau> ok upload is (I would say) about 50% done
23:29:45 <TimClark> don't forget links to http://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite and http://portableapps.com/node/20013
23:30:12 <sar3th> and handy .defs of GizmoBot
23:30:14 <TimClark> and the second one would of course be what ever the current beta is :P'

23:30:35 <ZachThibeau> lol easy answer xD
23:30:51 <TimClark> sar3th: please don't make so many by the way, no one but you knows them
23:31:09 <ptmb> oh, yes, I think the home page of the wiki should be some sort of resource page with links to the instrctions on how to give support and links to the most common of the common questions
23:31:12 <sar3th> which is why i want to have them on the list

23:47:26 <ptmb> pa_5173, basically you need to add 4 images to App/appinfo with specific names and sizes
23:48:03 <ptmb> understood?
23:48:44 <ptmb> or, if oyu have the files in .ico format, 2 images
