00:49:18 <Alcasar> hi
00:49:37 *** sar3th is now known as sar3th|away
00:49:48 <Alcasar> any way i could get firefox portable to put the cache on the desktop or the temp dir?
00:52:11 <Alcasar> computerfreaker|: hi
00:52:59 *** kaeos (n=Miranda@84.76.55.235) has joined #portableapps
00:53:43 <computerfreaker|> Hi Alcasar !
00:53:49 <computerfreaker|> let me check quick, I'm not sure
00:54:18 <computerfreaker|> doesn't look like you can do that, no
00:54:20 <computerfreaker|> sorry
00:57:47 <Alcasar> :-(
00:57:51 <Alcasar> thanks
00:58:31 <Alcasar> I'v found how to move the cache, but it needs a constant path
00:58:55 <computerfreaker|> just out of curiosity, how did you do it?
00:59:23 *** computerfreaker| is now known as computerfreaker
01:01:18 <Alcasar> http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
01:01:37 <Alcasar> in the about:config
01:02:08 <computerfreaker> Interesting
01:02:20 <computerfreaker> I'm familiar with about:config, but I've never tweaked that particular pref before
01:02:44 <Alcasar> you have to create it
01:02:56 <computerfreaker> maybe try moving your profile to the temp folder? The cache comes along... (although that might not be the most desirable thing to do)
01:03:55 <Gizmokid2005> You could also just disable the cache completely if you're worrieda bout disk activity
01:04:05 <Gizmokid2005> it's not stored on the local machines for obvious reasons
01:04:31 <Alcasar> ff portable permits to move "everything" to the temp for use with a live cd or read-only use
01:04:42 <Gizmokid2005> yes, it does.
01:04:46 <Alcasar> but then you lose all changes when you leave
01:04:50 <Gizmokid2005> exactly
01:05:07 <Alcasar> i'm trying to speed up ff portable
01:05:18 <Alcasar> stuck with usb 1 ports
01:05:24 <Gizmokid2005> Wow
01:05:27 <Gizmokid2005> old pc I take it?
01:05:45 <Alcasar> ya, public access
01:06:00 <Gizmokid2005> Alcasar: you can set RunLocally=True in the ini for Firefox
01:06:23 <Alcasar> i know but then you lose everything when you leave
01:06:29 <Gizmokid2005> yes...
01:06:32 <computerfreaker> Alcasar: RunLocally=True actually helps keep your Firefox safe from malware, esp. on public computers
01:06:35 <Alcasar> first thing i looked at
01:06:38 <Gizmokid2005> so unless you recode the launcher, you won't find a fix.
01:06:51 <computerfreaker> because the temp copy of FF gets deleted after you close it, any malware you collect gets deleted too
01:07:17 <Gizmokid2005> Alcasar: you aren't going to find an easy way to do what you want...you just aren't.
01:07:31 <computerfreaker> not unless you rewrite the launcher
01:07:37 <computerfreaker> but even that would be a monster-sized job
01:07:45 <Gizmokid2005> because if you were to move the cache to the local machine, and wanted it on your drive when you left, it would have to copy it all back upon close, which, on a slow drive or USB1.1 ports, would take quite a while
01:07:48 <Alcasar> no need to recode if i can modify the config or one of prefs.js or user.js
01:08:22 <computerfreaker> maybe that would work... hmm.... you could recode the launcher to change the cache location in prefs.js or user.js, I suppose
01:08:55 <computerfreaker> but it would be an awful job
01:09:00 <Alcasar> I don't want to cache back when i leave, but i do want any bookmarks, addons or anything else i might have changed
01:09:28 <computerfreaker> then just set FF to "Clear my private data on exit" and check the "Cache" box
01:09:38 <Alcasar> the cache is just the surfing temp dir
01:09:52 <Gizmokid2005> Alcasar: so why don't you do what I originally said, and just disable cache completely?
01:10:21 <computerfreaker> disabling the cache can make page load times slower, though, so you're going to have to trade something
01:10:26 <Alcasar> no cache, no speed, all is on the ram and take a guess as to the ram size of the old computers
01:10:53 <computerfreaker> "Clear my private data on exit", then check the "Cache" box
01:10:59 <computerfreaker> FF uses the cache, destroys it on exit
01:11:06 <Gizmokid2005> computerfreaker: you're missing the point
01:11:20 <Gizmokid2005> leaving cache enabled defeats the purpose he wants to do...he wants to speed up ff.
01:11:29 <Gizmokid2005> and leaving cache enabled will still keep the writes on the USB drive
01:11:32 <Gizmokid2005> which will slow it down.
01:11:40 <Gizmokid2005> if you DISABLE cache completely, that issue is gone
01:11:41 <computerfreaker> oh, I hadn't known that was what he was trying to do...
01:11:43 <computerfreaker> I see
01:11:54 <Gizmokid2005> and unless you are visiting the same site quite frequently, having the cache enabled won't do much.
01:11:56 <Alcasar> Gizmokid2005: unless the cache is not on the key
01:12:15 <Gizmokid2005> right Alcasar, but why would keeping it help you if you are going to forget about it when you are done?
01:12:36 <Gizmokid2005> in the same session, the cache is pretty useless like I said, unless you frequently visit the same site in the same session
01:12:47 <computerfreaker> Alcasar: maybe copy your profile to temp? That's the only (feasible) thing I can think of anymore
01:12:59 <Alcasar> i do keep visiting the same sites some times
01:13:10 <Gizmokid2005> Alcasar: right, but unless it's a lot, you won't notice much difference
01:13:15 <Gizmokid2005> unless you are on a very slow connection
01:13:18 <Alcasar> really?
01:13:36 <Gizmokid2005> yes
01:13:43 <Alcasar> mmm ...
01:13:45 <Gizmokid2005> what all do you expect to be cached?
01:13:50 <Gizmokid2005> typically it's just some images and stylesheets
01:14:02 <Gizmokid2005> so just disable the cache in Firefox and your issue is solved.
01:14:06 <Alcasar> well images can be big some times
01:14:36 <Gizmokid2005> they can be, but unless it's a slow connection and you HAVE to see the SAME image multiple times, you won't notice a thing.
01:14:58 <Alcasar> right i guess
01:15:27 <Alcasar> so if i disable the ram cache and the disk cache it should go faster?
01:15:36 <Gizmokid2005> the RAM cache doesn't matter, but the disk cache will
01:15:42 <Gizmokid2005> there'll be less reads/writes to the drive, so that'll help
01:15:54 <Gizmokid2005> and depending on the RAM on the machine, that might help too
01:15:54 <Alcasar> the rame cache slows down the whole computer
01:16:07 <Gizmokid2005> yeah, then disable that as well
01:16:21 <Alcasar> k thanks
01:16:39 <Gizmokid2005> you're welcome
01:16:45 <Alcasar> any ideas when version 2.0 of the platform might be out?
01:16:50 <Gizmokid2005> Alcasar: not a clue.
01:16:52 <Gizmokid2005> someday :)
01:16:55 <Gizmokid2005> that's always a safe answer
01:17:02 <Gizmokid2005> "it'll be out when it's done"

01:50:10 <ZachHudock> what is it rj_
01:50:29 <rj_> On the Portable Apps launcher how can I run a program with arguments
01:50:54 <rj_> Because if I add a shortcut to the exe it uses the main one
01:51:19 <rj_> If I move the main exe and have only the shortcut it wont show up at all
01:51:24 <ZachHudock> through the Menu or by double clicking the AppNamePortable.exe directly
01:51:30 <ZachHudock> ?
01:51:48 <rj_> like with -portable
01:51:58 <rj_> like mirc.exe -portable

17:05:19 <Bensawsome> ya visual basic apps have dependencies and really can't be portablized. It's cause it needs .net framework which isnt installed on every computer :/
17:05:27 <Gizmokid2005> IXC_: yes, VB apps aren't portable
17:05:35 <Gizmokid2005> because the host PC must have .NET installed

I downloaded to the c drive, did not add to start menu, and not can't access them unless aI run a search on the files. How can I get the start menu to feature the applicatins, andrun the apps directly?

23:49:32 <MaienM|AFK> pa_9799: the platform is meant to be used from a portable device such as an USB drive. It will not add itself to the start menu, this is on purpose since it does not tie itself to the system it runs on in any way. You can of course manually create a shortcut in the start menu if you wish to. To do so, right-click the StartPortableapps.exe and select Copy As -> Shortcut. Then drag this shortcut to the start menu, into the folder where you

23:52:22 <pa_9799> Thanks -- but I can't even open my c: drive -- the computer will not let me, so I can't click on any of the file names. I'm not even sure I can delete them, . Do you know how I can delete them? then I can start over, and down load the suite to a USB drive.
23:53:47 <MaienM|AFK> you can open the C: drive by going to Start, then to Run, and then typing in "C:" (without the ""s) and then pressing enter
23:58:31 <pa_9799> Yay! I found them. I was able to click on the Start Portable Apps logo, and the Portable Apps start menu came up! That is actually what I want to be able to access. Is there a way that I can move the whole suite and start menu to another folder, not on the c: drive , so I don't have to go through the Run, c:, etc?
23:59:17 <pa_9799> IT's like having everything on my Netbook, so I don't have to use up a USB port to run the apps! I like it even better than putting them on a USB drive.
23:59:40 <pa_9799> actually, everything IS on my netbook, ha!
23:59:53 <MaienM|AFK> you can select all files (the files StartPortableapps.exe and autorun.ini, the folders PortableApps and Documents), press control + x to cut them, and then go to the place where you want to move them to
23:59:58 <MaienM|AFK> andf then press control + v
