00:00:50 <ptmb> Hello pa_3731
00:00:50 * pa_3731 help
00:01:07 <pa_3731> sea monkey has a update
00:01:34 <pa_3731> can i update thru portable
00:02:00 <pa_3731> or wait for a new version to come
00:02:12 <ptmb> You should not use the built in upgrader, as it messes up with the system
00:02:22 <pa_3731> ok
00:02:35 <ptmb> but i don't know if manually upgrading will harm the app or not, sorry
00:02:35 <pa_3731> so ill wait
00:02:55 <pa_3731> ok thanks
00:03:00 <ChrisMorgan> Upgrading will leave behind a registry key adding it to the uninstall list
00:03:04 <ptmb> you're welcome, and sorry I couldn't help more
00:03:27 <ChrisMorgan> If you don't mind that, feel free to upgrade. But it's probably not worth it anyway.
00:03:42 <pa_3731> thanks all i guess a new version will be out in a week
00:04:17 *** pa_3731 has quit ("Page closed")
00:04:18 <ChrisMorgan> I hope so. John's busy with CES though, and SourceForge has been having a lot of troubles with making releases
00:07:36 <computerfreaker> ChrisMorgan: once I get done with the "admin unlock" feature, is there a way I can send it just to you, John and the rest of the mods?
00:07:47 <ChrisMorgan> Why?
00:08:07 <computerfreaker> I've been putting the KidSafe users through enough changes lately, and don't feel like publicly toying with a new feature that may or may not stay
00:09:04 <computerfreaker> if it gets the approval of you, John, and the other mods, it'll stay; otherwise, I'll just branch
00:09:34 <computerfreaker> either way, I don't want to do another round of the public runaround that's been going on with KidSafe lately...

00:25:25 <ChrisMorgan> I think probably so. Create it in a new thread though.
00:27:14 <computerfreaker> ok
00:27:24 <computerfreaker> once I create the new thread, could you or another mod lock my old one?
00:27:46 <computerfreaker> (please don't do it now, though, as the new beta won't be ready for at least a week and probably more)

03:01:43 <OsterPenPortable> Does the portable version of Firefox accept the normal command line switches?
03:02:13 <OsterPenPortable> If yes, is there any special voodoo magic to make the menu accept command switches in appinfo.ini?
03:06:27 <TimClark> OsterPenPortable: what command line do you want to pass ?
03:08:38 <OsterPenPortable> "-url cisco.netacad.net" for one and a local file for another.
03:10:03 <TimClark> so you will have 2 launchers, one for each of the choices ?
03:10:17 <TimClark> the first could just be the homepage, no ?
03:10:32 <OsterPenPortable> Yes
03:11:01 <OsterPenPortable> Actually, I have for but the relevent part of [Control]:
03:11:02 <OsterPenPortable> Start2=FirefoxPortable.exe cisco.netacad.net
03:11:02 <OsterPenPortable> Name2=Cisco Network Academy
03:11:02 <OsterPenPortable> Start3="FirefoxPortable.exe 203\index.html"

03:42:42 <OsterPenPortable> Is this clear enough: http://portableapps.com/node/22169 ?
03:45:29 <TimClark> moment
03:47:11 <TimClark> I am confused those are the contents of what , the app.ini in our FFP?
03:47:32 <TimClark> you want the laucher to ask you which choice you want , is that it ?
03:47:57 <OsterPenPortable> That's appini for FirefoxPortable. The start# commands are the menu items.
03:48:17 <TimClark> I thought you were launching our FFP from a batch file of some sort of you own, that asked you which you wanted
03:48:18 <OsterPenPortable> I can put in absolute pathnames, I'll go do that.
03:48:28 <OsterPenPortable> Nope, each is a different icon.
03:49:02 <TimClark> again, I am confused, but that's ok, I'm sure some one better at this than I will understand
03:49:51 <TimClark> again, good luck
03:52:39 <OsterPenPortable> Would you like me to break it down?
03:52:42 <OsterPenPortable> And thank you.
03:53:41 <TimClark> not really, it would go over my head
03:54:00 <TimClark> plus i am kind of distracted at the moment
03:54:55 <TimClark> was your edit of the post major/significant
03:55:23 <OsterPenPortable> Not really.
03:56:10 <TimClark> ok, if you should make significant changes, please note them, so folks don't get confused
03:57:09 <OsterPenPortable> I changed the start/end notation of appinfo.ini to it's absolute path.
03:57:24 <OsterPenPortable> And commented that I knew the fourth icon was disabled.
03:57:34 <TimClark> gotcha
04:09:09 <TimClark> someone has chosen to modify your post :/
04:10:23 <ChrisMorgan> Sorry, I was fixing the <pre> tags, hadn't noticed this here
04:10:37 <ChrisMorgan> I only just got back
04:10:59 <TimClark> As you are both here it would have been better to ask him if that is what he wants to do
04:11:02 <ChrisMorgan> Sorry 'bout that
04:11:09 <ChrisMorgan> OsterPenPortable: you can't do it that way
04:11:41 <ChrisMorgan> It will be trying to execute an executable named `X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe cisco.netacad.net`.
04:11:48 <ChrisMorgan> And fiddling with quotes won't help either.
04:11:58 <OsterPenPortable> I've gotten around it by making bat files that call 'start /b'.
04:12:05 <OsterPenPortable> It seems to work fine, just flashes a console.
04:12:21 <ChrisMorgan> That's the simplest way of doing it. You can do a simple NSIS launcher if you want
04:12:27 <OsterPenPortable> NSIS?
04:12:36 <ChrisMorgan> FirefoxPortable.exe is compiled NSIS.
04:12:45 <OsterPenPortable> I don't know the acronym.
04:12:54 <ChrisMorgan> The simplest way is just create a new file with the following lines:
04:13:16 *** TimClark has parted #portableapps ()
04:14:25 <ChrisMorgan> OutFile Cisco.exe
04:14:26 <ChrisMorgan> RequestExecutionLevel user
04:14:26 <ChrisMorgan> SilentInstall silent
04:14:26 <ChrisMorgan> Section
04:14:26 <ChrisMorgan> Exec `"$EXEDIR\FirefoxPortable.exe" cisco.netacad.net`
04:14:26 <ChrisMorgan> SectionEnd
04:14:55 <ChrisMorgan> Put that as Cisco.nsi, next to FirefoxPortable.exe or somewhere else, and compile it with NSIS Portable.
04:15:11 <ChrisMorgan> If you had it in another directory, copy Cisco.exe next to FirefoxPortable.exe.
04:15:14 <OsterPenPortable> I think I'll pass, thank you.
04:15:21 <OsterPenPortable> I'm in class, and that would require thinking too hard.
04:15:28 <ChrisMorgan> OK :-)
04:15:47 <ChrisMorgan> A batch file will work fine though if you don't mind it flashing like that.
04:16:14 <OsterPenPortable> It isn't very intrusive. "start /b" is wonderful that way.
04:16:32 <ChrisMorgan> Yep
04:18:06 <OsterPenPortable> The hard one was integrated Pendrive Linux into the menu so that it would run.

19:29:07 <JohnTHaller> Hmm.... what mirror is it using on SF? Have you tried picking a different one?
19:29:48 <pa_3292> not sure which one but I tried a different one and got the same message
19:30:27 <JohnTHaller> Which app?
19:30:36 <pa_3292> That was when I was using IE to download.
19:31:41 <pa_3292> App the Suite (which got the message but somehow managed to load, and today the puzzle game Joolem
19:32:45 <JohnTHaller> which mirrors have you tried? I'm gonna try the same one and ensure its copy of Jooleem is right

19:36:22 <pa_3292> softlayer.dl.sourceforge.net
19:36:48 <JohnTHaller> pa_4395: You either need a drive that supports password protection itself (it's usually advertised), or you need to encrypt your drive with something like TrueCrypt (which will then only work on PCs with admin rights).
19:38:09 <JohnTHaller> pa_3292: I just downloaded JooleemPortable_0.1.4.1_English.paf.exe from softlayer and it works just fine. The error you're seeing happens when the installer is either incomplete (didn't all download) or is corrupted (which can be caused by saving it to a bad drive or using it on a PC that is infected with a virus)
19:40:35 <pa_3292> I run avg nightly but it could be a virus. How can I get a new installer?
19:40:53 *** pa_4395 has quit ("Page closed")
19:42:55 <pa_3292> Umm... installer comes with the download , right?m
19:44:05 <JohnTHaller> pa_3292: The download IS the installer. You download it and run it. If it pops up the error, then something happened either on its way to you (bad connection, sometimes flakey wireless) or on your PC (virus, bad drive, bad USB port, etc)

19:46:12 <pa_6936> There's a lot of stuff in the portable apps suite that I will never use. I don't see any way to remove them. Is there a way?
19:46:25 <pa_3292> Okay, I think I'll try downloading it directly to the thumb drive and if that doesn't work I'll start looking for a virus or hard drive problem.
19:46:32 <pa_3292> Thanks for your help.
19:46:35 <JohnTHaller> pa_3292: Ok, good luck
19:46:48 <JohnTHaller> pa_6936: yes, you can delete the apps you don't want directly.
19:46:59 *** pa_3292 has quit ("Page closed")
19:47:20 <pa_6936> how do I do that -- can I simply delete the folders?
19:47:22 <JohnTHaller> pa_6936: In the PA.c Platform that comes with the suite, just click Explore and browse to the X:\PortableApps dirtectoryt of your drive. There, delete any apps you don't want. Then in the menu, click options and refresh app icons
19:47:57 <pa_6936> ok, thanks
19:48:05 <JohnTHaller> The current 2.0 Beta allows you to just right-click and uninstall, which is much easier, but it's not a part of the suite yet. It's pretty stable, just not translated into all languages... if you'd like to try it

22:51:39 <ChrisMorgan> It really is rather nice, only using 700MB of my 2GB of memory rather than 1.8-2GB almost all the time... and Ubuntu is just /so/ much snappier than Vista ever was.
22:51:56 <ChrisMorgan> And the CPU doesn't sit on 30-100% all the time.
22:52:45 <ChrisMorgan> It tends to sit at 10-20% now. And most of that is gnome-system-monitor itself.
22:52:58 <JohnTHaller> Be curious about that vs Win7 on your system
22:53:24 <ChrisMorgan> It would be interesting.
22:55:55 <ChrisMorgan> Windows 7 was still guzzling lots of memory on Dad's computer when it worked.
22:58:24 *** SteveLamerton has quit ()
23:01:20 <ChrisMorgan> Then the drive started packing up (S.M.A.R.T. controller finally admitted it was "bad"), and the Windows 7 partition died. The Windows 2000 partition remained intact though... so Dad was able to move it over onto a new disk without needing to re-set-everything-up for his WaterSums development.
