01:52:28 <Juan|xiphos> Hi
01:52:59 <TimClark> Hello Juan|xiphos . the room is kinda dead right now
01:53:18 <Juan|xiphos> I need to know if there is a way to password encrypt the portable apps
01:53:37 <TimClark> Not as of yet, but it has been discussed
01:53:55 <TimClark> Encryption usually requires an installed driver on the host
01:54:27 <TimClark> A simple password protection is going to be added as an option in the future
01:54:43 <TimClark> But it would not be hard for a geek to get around
01:54:45 <Juan|xiphos> Like mine had a u3 program which I did not like. It had a password protection to it.
01:55:21 <Juan|xiphos> I do not work with geeky people I just want to keep my files private.
01:55:24 <TimClark> That was built into the drive itself, I have U3 drives as well
01:56:07 <TimClark> The U3 does not always encrypt I believe, it denys access to the writable portion of the drive
01:56:07 <Juan|xiphos> Yes I know that I want some thing that is like that. I know that with the u3 you can remove the software
01:56:35 <Juan|xiphos> No what it does it makes it to where people can just see ur files
01:57:05 <TimClark> If you say so, but that is not how it works on my U3 drive
01:57:36 <TimClark> If the pasword is not entered, you can only see the psedo CD rom dirve, not the writable part
01:58:07 <TimClark> But in either case, it is built into the hardware of the drive
01:59:29 <Juan|xiphos> No cuase on mine you could see the drive and the cd rom drive. The only think is that you can add files to the part of the drive that does not have the u3 software to it.
01:59:53 <TimClark> Again, if you say so, but that is not how mine work
02:00:52 <TimClark> I get a message to insert a disk if I try to access the writable portion w/o the password, I have one in my machine right now
02:01:19 <Juan|xiphos> Ok, then it must be different on yours. Mi friend had one and it did the same thing as mine. I just remove it because some computers would not allow me to fully run it at my college.
02:02:10 <TimClark> I have just been called upstairs so I will have to be leaving now, if you search the forums you can find more information on 3rd party encryption options
02:02:34 <Juan|xiphos> Ok
02:02:51 <TimClark> search for truecrypt I think
02:03:18 <Juan|xiphos> I do not like truecrypt
02:03:43 <TimClark> I know me too
02:04:03 <TimClark> That's why I keep U3 on my drive, but many folks don't like it
02:06:34 <gluxon> Juan|xiphos: Why not keep U3 only for the encryption and PortableApps.com for the apps? They work side by side with no problems
02:07:31 <TimClark> That is excally what I do gluxon
02:08:37 <Juan|xiphos> I would if it the u3 did not become a pain on the butt. They need to fix the problem with it having to run a drive and cd rom. I know that is why many computers do not accept that.
02:09:30 <TimClark> Yes, that is the only problem I have had with it
02:09:53 <TimClark> But all the machines I use allow the drive letters, so it works for me
02:10:20 <gluxon> Juan|xiphos: That's the way U3 does the encryption. The program that unlocks your drive after you enter your password is on that CD-rom
02:11:04 *** ChrisMorgan (~ChrisMorg@unaffiliated/chrismorgan) has joined #portableapps
02:11:08 <Juan|xiphos> Ok still I want something that does not requiere running that way.
02:11:35 <gluxon> Juan|xiphos: Not possible without two partitions.
02:11:36 <TimClark> Minor point gluxon the newer modles don't fake a cd anymore, just a drive you can't write to, anyway, got to go now
02:12:07 <Juan|xiphos> U mean the new u3 drives
02:12:32 <TimClark> Juan|xiphos: yes
02:12:41 <Juan|xiphos> Ok
02:12:51 <Juan|xiphos> I guest I will look into that
02:13:18 <TimClark> I think the fact that it STILL needs 2 letters might give you a problem Juan|xiphos
02:13:31 <TimClark> Anyway, later all

02:13:43 <Juan|xiphos> Bye
02:13:45 *** OliverK (~WifiWomba@unaffiliated/oliverk) has joined #portableapps
02:16:45 <gluxon> Juan|xiphos: Picture it this way. The drive has to be separated into two, since when you protect your USB partition, no program can read or write to it. That brings up a problem, how would the Operating System open up the program to unlock it if it can't read from the drive?
02:17:19 <gluxon> The solution is to create another partition that is read-only to unlock the other partition.
02:17:29 <Juan|xiphos> correct
02:17:33 <gluxon> Now I have to go as well.

05:33:42 <JohnTHaller> thunderbird release :(
05:38:29 <auscompgeek> Did you update Firefox Portable to the latest versions?
05:38:50 <JohnTHaller> already done
05:40:41 <JohnTHaller> and thunderbird is up
05:44:04 <ChrisMorgan> How are things going with fixing all the bugs in PAP 2b5?
05:45:06 <JohnTHaller> pretty good. debating between a 2b5.1 release and waiting til 2b6
05:46:00 <auscompgeek> oh :)
05:47:12 <auscompgeek> Oh, I also found a bug with the updater, if there is no internet connection, it shows up its blank dialog box, and when you press Next, it says that your apps have been updated. Known bug?
05:47:16 <ChrisMorgan> Beta 5.1!? EEK!
05:48:05 <JohnTHaller> 5.1 is an odd number... but it'd let us get out a quick fix for bugs, possibly with no homepage announcement... and push it out via updater.
05:48:10 <ChrisMorgan> I'd say if it's going to take more than something like a week for b6 to be ready with new features and all, release b6 with bugfixes and shift the new features of b6 to b7.
05:48:31 <JohnTHaller> If we go with b6, the exact same people will complain about categories not being in it. again.
05:48:46 <ChrisMorgan> Though you can still have a new feature or two
05:49:07 <JohnTHaller> Otherwise, I can push out 5.1 tomorrow
05:52:46 <ChrisMorgan> I /really/ don't like the idea of departing from a purely linear numbering for Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, Release Candidates, Development Tests, Pre-Releases or any such things.
05:52:51 <ChrisMorgan> It's just... ugly.
05:54:18 <auscompgeek> Agreed.
05:55:53 <JohnTHaller> Ok, but I can't be held responsible for the passive-agressive 'oh, wow, another update without categories. guess i'll stick to modr34. you guys suck' posts :-P
05:56:27 <ChrisMorgan> :D
05:56:55 <auscompgeek> lol
05:58:55 <ChrisMorgan> Just say "it was Chris's fault! I was going to call it Beta 5.1 and hope that you wouldn't notice, but he objected to non-linear Beta numbering!"
05:59:14 <JohnTHaller> Yes, I'll do that
05:59:27 <auscompgeek> Eh, just do 5.1 and save yourself the trouble :P
06:00:44 <JohnTHaller> You'll notice I took your advice and didn't promise any specific features at specific times with the Beta 5 release ;-)

09:19:09 <shanet> yep
09:19:54 <shanet> Will I need to re-run the PAL generator?
09:20:10 <Gringoloco> Just include it as PortableApps.comLauncherCustom.nsh, and run the generator
09:20:23 <Gringoloco> Make sure PortableApps.comLauncherCustom.nsh is in Other\Source
09:20:58 <Gringoloco> after the launcher.ini accepts wildcards, but just for [filesmove]

09:31:48 <shanet> Gringoloco: It hasn't worked. I deleted the launcher, put the portableapps.comlaunchercustom.nsh in and re-did the launcher. After that I put in the filesmove part and the data and it doenst work.

09:32:30 <Gringoloco> Maybe debug, one sec.
09:33:22 <Gringoloco> Did you put the custom code in 'Other/Source' ?
09:34:03 <shanet> Of course.
09:34:17 <shanet> no. just numbers

09:34:53 <shanet> This is the current random string: 12797045241
09:35:05 <shanet> stickynote12797045241.txt
09:35:14 <shanet> thats the name for the current 1
09:36:15 <Gringoloco> should be in launcher.ini like :stickynote*.txt
09:38:45 <shanet> thats correct
09:39:06 <Gringoloco> Use the debug, and send me the log through Pastebin
09:39:19 <shanet> OK. thanks
09:39:39 <shanet> not downloading :P
09:40:13 <Gringoloco> Have you used the PAL debug before ?
09:41:21 <shanet> no
09:41:27 <shanet> never
09:41:58 <Gringoloco> Just make an empty files in 'Other\Source' and call it 'PortableApps.comLauncherDebug.nsh'
09:42:24 <Gringoloco> Then add the following line: !define DEBUG_SEGMENT_PortableApps.comLauncherCustom
09:43:51 <Gringoloco> You'll get message-boxes telling you what PAL is doing, for the specific segment, and a debug.log which you could send me, so I could have an idea whats going wrong
09:44:10 <Gringoloco> Make sure to re-genarate the launcher again
09:46:31 <shanet> ok but where do I add the !define line???
09:47:31 <Gringoloco> It should be the only line in PortableApps.comLauncherDebug.nsh
09:47:52 <shanet> OK thanks
09:48:09 <Gringoloco> Sorry, I'm not very good in explaining !
09:49:05 <shanet> thats fine ive learned heaps already

09:59:28 <shanet> sorry, http://pastebin.com/7nrNqerQ
10:00:39 <Gringoloco> In what folder is the stcikynote file ? Data\settings ?
10:03:55 <Gringoloco> And why on earth should it go to the desktop ? It's not very save this way, you cannot count on the desktop always to be in USERPROFILE !
10:05:50 <shanet> I could do it under data\files. The program only looks on the desktop for these files and there is no way of configuring otherwise
10:06:45 <Gringoloco> Got to go for lunch, the following should work if the file is in Data\settings:
10:06:49 <Gringoloco> settings\StickyNote*.txt=%userprofile%\desktop
10:07:22 <Gringoloco> I'll be back later.
10:08:09 <Gringoloco> If it needs to be in Data\files use the following in stead: files\StickyNote*.txt=%userprofile%\desktop

18:17:14 <Gringoloco> Should I make a comment about this, or is it already commented before ?
18:17:21 <Gizmokid2005> it pegs one core of my CPU so...

19:15:54 *** marlop is now known as marlop|away
19:16:06 <pa_5740> I've found my answer, never mind.
19:16:08 <Gringoloco> pa_5740: You'll never know when he will be around
19:18:06 <pa_5740> If anyone sees him around, inform him that if he wants to get a cloak for his account, he'll have to wait until the 29th to do so.
19:18:46 <pa_5740> BTW, I say this because he mentioned previously that he'd been waiting two years for one.
19:19:48 <pa_5740> So if somebody could do that, I'd appreciate it. That is, if nobody minds........

19:30:09 <pa_5740> ZachThibeau: Can you set up multiple accounts in PChat like you can in Pidgin Portable?
19:30:58 <ZachThibeau> I kind of figured :P and sort of, in the network list menu you can edit server connections and tell pchat what to join automatically server wise and channel wise
19:34:16 <pa_5740> ZachThibeau: The reason why I ask is because in Pidgin I have multiple accounts for the irc channels I use (e.g. I have pa_5740 for #portableapps). The problem is, when I set my status to available, all of the accounts connect to the irc channel that I have set up, and I have to close all the tabs that show up because they are all just authenticating with the servers and after that they do nothing. Sorry fo the long post.
19:34:44 <pa_5740> irc channels, rather.
