00:22:32 <leeroy11> hello
00:22:53 <gluxon> leeroy: hello.
00:23:11 <leeroy11> with portable apps is it possible to load other programs onto it?
00:25:14 <gluxon> If you mean adding it to the menu, then yes.
00:25:34 <gluxon> There's no garentee the app you add will be portable though.
00:25:56 <gluxon> http://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#addingotherapps
00:26:49 <leeroy11> ok so it has to be a 'portable' app and not all software will work with it?
00:28:01 <gluxon> Correct.
00:28:15 <gluxon> I mean portable as in settings won't be left behind.
00:28:22 <leeroy11> how can i tell if software is 'portable?
00:28:39 <leeroy11> sorry for very basic questions
00:29:37 <gluxon> You can't without testing it, as in finding out where it leaves it's settings.
00:30:18 <leeroy11> ok well im not sure im capable of finding out that
00:33:44 <leeroy11> thanks for the help then gluxon

22:19:42 <kiwikay> How can I tell which Firefox I have opened? I thought the portable one used to say "Firefox Portable" at the top of the window. Now, I sometimes think my portable one is running (and I bookmark things) only to find it's the Firefox running off the C drive (computer shared by others). When I check "About Mozilla Firefox", I see no indication that it's the portable one running.
22:20:53 <ptmb> kiwikay, that is because the Mozilla Corporation doesn't let PortableApps.com package Mozilla Firefox Portable unless it has no changes whatsoever besides the absolute essential ones
22:21:23 <ptmb> but, if you want, you can, by yourself, make some changes to Firefox Portable Edition so as to make it different
22:22:29 <ptmb> I recommend you install a Persona on your portable firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/personas/
22:24:08 <kiwikay> Thanks, I'll try that.
22:24:28 <ptmb> you're welcome, I hope I have helped
22:29:09 <gluxon> kiwikay: If you want to add "Portable" to the menubar, take a look at this addon -> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/57/
22:29:42 <gluxon> Might be useless in a couple of months, considerting Firefox 4 is remove the titlebar.
22:29:53 <gluxon> *title (not titlebar)
22:38:26 <kiwikay> Next question... When I get a message asking me if I want to upgrade to the latest software (Firefox and other portable apps), can I just do it, or will that install the non-portable version?
22:39:44 <ptmb> you shouldn't, it is possible, but can cause problems
22:40:24 <ptmb> using firefox built in updating system will create duplicate entires in the add remove programs, and the portable launcher might not be prepared
22:41:38 <ptmb> the recomended is to install new versions from portableapps.com, and, as they are released rather quickly after the original version, and are prepared to deal with any changes on the original program
22:41:44 <Scriptdaemon> It's recommended to not update any apps on PA.c with their own updaters. Wait until there is an official PA.c update.
22:43:24 <kiwikay> Is there some automated way to have PortableApps update my nearly 30 portable apps? Similar to the way you can Find Updates for Firefox addons?
22:44:08 <Scriptdaemon> The current beta has a built-in updater.
22:44:20 <Scriptdaemon> I shall provide you a link if you would like to try it out, one second.
22:44:42 <Scriptdaemon> http://portableapps.com/node/24258
22:44:56 <kiwikay> I'm not sure I want something that may not be stable -- I'm not that technical.
22:45:13 <Scriptdaemon> That's your call, but I use it and I've has 0 problems.
22:45:16 <Scriptdaemon> had*
22:45:27 <ptmb> Scriptdaemon is referring to the PortableApps.com Platform, which is a menu to launch your PortableApps. The current beta version and the future versions will include a built in updater for your portable apps
22:45:52 <kiwikay> If I do, what kinds of things (problems) should I keep an eye out for?
22:46:38 <Scriptdaemon> You can read the thread itself and any of its replies, as others may have found issues here and there. As far as I'm aware, however, there aren't any major issues.
22:46:45 <kiwikay> Any idea when this feature will be out of beta testing?
22:47:34 <ptmb> As John T. Haller usually says: "It's done when its done." That is, there is no definitive release date
22:47:37 <kiwikay> Have you used the built-in updater feature successfully?
22:47:57 <Scriptdaemon> "When it's done" is generally the answer to that question around here. Dates only put pressure on getting out releases instead of allowing developers to work on all the bugs, etc.
22:48:07 <Scriptdaemon> I have and it has worked perfectly.
22:49:19 *** awircser has quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
22:49:19 <kiwikay> It sure would make PortableApps more user friendly! I'm wanting to get my kids set up with Portable Apps for their first computer experience (to try to save my computer from any damage they might do).
22:52:45 <kiwikay> I know this isn't a portableapps question, but do you have a recommendation for the best software to keep my kids from accessing mature content??
22:56:10 <Scriptdaemon> I don't know of any offhand, unfortunately. My best answer to that question is to try taking it to Google and see if you find anything useful.
22:56:19 <kiwikay> Thanks ptmb and Scriptdaemon. Just looked at the beta -- I'm going to install it. Thanks for your time. Oh, and I've only been using my PA on windows computers. Can I plug it into a Mac and use it, or will none of my files be compatible?
22:56:42 <Mir> umm
22:56:56 <Mir> mac not so much unless you buy special software
22:57:04 <Mir> then acian there is WINE
22:57:08 <Mir> agian
22:57:16 <Scriptdaemon> No, PA.c only supports Windows. (Aside from Mir's suggestion.)
22:57:16 <Mir> BUT
22:57:36 <ptmb> The programs do not work on Mac unless it already has installed certain specific programs, making it hard and rare to be able to use on Mac
22:58:05 <Mir> like WINE or its cost version
22:58:09 <Mir> yes
22:58:23 <Mir> they sell WINE and not at your local store either :(
22:58:29 <kiwikay> Thanks, for me that's a No on the Mac. Don't want to get too complicated. :-)
22:59:04 <Scriptdaemon> There's a Mac version of WINE, Mir? I thought it was only Linux (I've never used Mac, so I wouldn't know).
22:59:12 <Mir> there is
22:59:13 <ptmb> Scriptdaemon, yes, there is
22:59:18 <Scriptdaemon> Ah, neat.
22:59:59 <Mir> Scriptdaemon: they have a pay version too
23:00:01 <Mir> http://www.codeweavers.com/
23:00:10 <Mir> thats the site that supports WINE
23:00:33 <ptmb> Mir, it is wortless to pay for a version of something you can get for free
23:00:39 <ptmb> (got the pun? :D )
23:01:08 <Scriptdaemon> I thought CrossOver and Wine were from completely different developers?
23:01:24 <ptmb> Scriptdaemon, yes, but based on the same code, from WINE
23:01:33 <Scriptdaemon> Ah, I see.
23:01:38 <ptmb> CrossOver is an OpenSource payed version of wine
23:01:54 <Scriptdaemon> I don't see the purpose of that at all.
23:02:04 <Mir> ptmb: no
23:02:07 <Mir> its not
23:02:16 <ptmb> :P
23:02:19 <Mir> Crossover has MS office 2010 support
23:02:22 <Mir> WINE doesnt
23:02:33 <ptmb> Mir, Crossover has some differences from WINE
23:02:40 <Mir> things trickle down from crossover
23:02:41 <ptmb> but the underlying code was based on WINE
23:02:47 <Mir> indeed
23:02:49 <Mir> BUT
23:02:59 <Mir> you pay for support unlike wine
23:03:31 <Mir> so you wont have people comming in here wineing about (pardon the pun) "I CANNOT GET MY PORTABLE APP RUNNING"
23:03:38 *** kiwikay has quit (Quit: Page closed)
23:03:48 <ptmb> anyway, here is a version of wine for free for MacOS that I found awhile ago http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/
23:03:54 <Mir> it would be dealt with the codeweaver group
23:04:21 <Mir> also codeweaver's crossover has better mac support
23:04:28 <Mir> just to let you know ~_0
23:04:29 <ptmb> Mir, it woudln't be dealt in here anyway, we don't support PortableApps on any place other than Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7
23:04:42 <ptmb> (and I don't own a Mac btw :P )
23:04:50 <Mir> "but i has windows on mai mac!"
