00:06:37 <Scriptdaemon> ChrisMorgan, I think I ran into a launcher bug. They updated the portable build of Speccy to not require an already existing settings file for it to recognize that it's meant to be portable, so I removed the DefaultData folder. Now it doesn't backup the settings file correctly.
00:07:27 <ChrisMorgan> Scriptdaemon: where is the settings file? Data or Data\settings should be OK but any other subdirectory would not be.
00:07:57 <Scriptdaemon> Data\settings. Why wouldn't any other subdirectory work?

00:11:39 <Scriptdaemon> ChrisMorgan, nothing wrong with this line, right? settings\Speccy.ini=%PAL:AppDir%\Speccy The file *is* Speccy.ini, and it's put into the same directory as the .exe file.
00:12:00 <ChrisMorgan> Another subdirectory wouldn't work unless the directory were created in some way.
00:12:19 <Scriptdaemon> Ah. But yeah, that wouldn't be the problem.
00:12:39 <ChrisMorgan> That should be correct.
00:14:13 <Scriptdaemon> I'll go ahead and debug it after I watch an ep of Rome. If that doesn't help, I'll send you the package.
00:14:43 <ChrisMorgan> Which version are you using - 2.0 or tip?
00:14:56 <Scriptdaemon> The latest stable.
00:15:02 <ChrisMorgan> K.
00:15:06 <Scriptdaemon> So 2.0, I guess.
00:16:01 <Scriptdaemon> The only thing I can think of is that it uses admin, so maybe there's a problem there?
00:16:24 <ChrisMorgan> That's the most likely cause, though exactly how it could be messing it up I'm not sure.
00:17:55 <ChrisMorgan> Open handles on a file would also stop its being moved, but I don't think that's likely to be it if Speccy has closed.
00:18:57 *** rouilj1 (~rouilj@pool-74-104-157-242.bstnma.fios.verizon.net) has joined #portableapps
00:20:29 <ChrisMorgan> I doubt debugging will help you. It might if it put in a debug message like "Failed to rename ___ to ___", but it doesn't have such messages much at all.

00:24:06 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: This is a small question, but is Firefox Portable paticularly write intensive?
00:24:34 <Scriptdaemon> http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1442139/Projects/SpeccyPortable_1.04.173_Development_Test_1_English_online.paf.exe You can take a look then.
00:24:59 <ChrisMorgan> pa_5740: fairly. If you're needing to make it "lighter", read the support documentation; it has a section on making it faster.
00:25:24 <pa_5740> Ok, one minute please.
00:25:40 <Scriptdaemon> Oh, also. When I launch the .exe files themselves, no problems. But if you launch from the launcher, it says it can't load the CPU DLL. Would this have anything to do with the .exe signature?
00:26:25 <ChrisMorgan> Scriptdaemon: I don't think I'll get to it today as I'll be off to Uni in an hours time and am busy until then; at Uni later today I'll have spare time I don't have admin there so it's not very useful.
00:26:42 <ChrisMorgan> Could be the working directory.
00:27:07 <ChrisMorgan> Try setting [Launch]:WorkingDirectory=%PAL:AppDir%\Speccy
00:27:19 <Scriptdaemon> Didn't think of that, I'll try it.
00:27:26 <Scriptdaemon> Didn't it work for you without admin on XP though?
00:27:48 <ChrisMorgan> Hmm... yes, it did, didn't it.
00:27:51 *** SrgSiler|AFK is now known as SergentSiler
00:28:33 <ChrisMorgan> I find one useful way of sorting out issues like that is to start it both ways and compare things in Process Explorer to try and remove all differences as much as possible - command-line arguments, environment if applicable, working directory. And WD is the most likely.
00:30:28 <Scriptdaemon> Working directory isn't it.
00:31:53 <Scriptdaemon> I'll look at it with Process Explorer later too.
00:33:09 <ChrisMorgan> Try running Speccy as you do in Speccy Portable as much as possible - run it from the command line with command line arguments, environment, just gradually put it together as the launcher would do and see if you can spot when it breaks.
00:33:15 <ChrisMorgan> Then you'll probably have the answer.
00:33:22 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: Sorry to interupt, but does entering "browser.sessionstore.enabled" in the about:config menu still work? gluxon said that it didn't, but I wouldn't mind a second opinion. :)
00:33:33 <ChrisMorgan> I don't know
00:34:02 <gluxon> No, it's removed in FF.
00:34:03 <ChrisMorgan> If in danger, or in doubt, http://www.google.com/search?q=browser.sessionstore.enabled
00:34:11 <pa_5740> To quote, "The session store about:config value was sort of changed in 3.6 (perhaps earlier), I don't think it can be turned off anymore. Just change the interval it saves tabs.
00:34:11 <pa_5740> "
00:34:52 <ChrisMorgan> http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore#Completely_disabling_session_store
00:35:19 <Scriptdaemon> ChrisMorgan, nothing seems to be visibly different in how it is launched, so I'll have to check the environment in a bit.
00:35:44 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: Thanks! :)
00:36:06 <ChrisMorgan> I'll update the support section to mention that now.
00:37:43 <pa_5740> That would be a splendid idea, chap. ;)
00:43:56 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: BTW, concerning this statement in that page "Uncheck the box next to "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery" and then click OK. " It's not there in Firefox 3.6, at least not 3.6.8
00:46:25 <ChrisMorgan> "Block reported attack sites" and "Block reported web forgeries"?
00:50:25 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: Probably, but I'm not sure about that.
00:51:49 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: To ask another question: say for example one has a HTML file on a USB drive, and they bookmarked it in FF Portable; is there any way one could have it set up so that even when the drive letter changes, it can still link to that file?
00:52:20 <ChrisMorgan> The drive letter should be updated automatically, I believe.

01:11:31 <ChrisMorgan> pa_5740: helpful tip if you need to try changing a drive letter to run an app from: subst
01:12:13 <ChrisMorgan> I presume the file and Firefox Portable were on the same volume, and you changed that drive letter for both at the same time?
01:12:29 <ChrisMorgan> Perhaps for bookmarks it didn't do it.
01:12:42 <ChrisMorgan> If you had it as the start page I think it would be updated.
01:13:13 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: No, I just moved the file, I haven't done anything with drive letter changing.
01:13:44 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: Is there a program that works on Win2000 to 7 that would do this?
01:13:45 <ChrisMorgan> Firefox Portable can only update the drive letter for things on its own drive letter; and how can it know about a file on a different letter?
01:14:14 <pa_5740> Disregard my previous statement.
01:14:41 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: how does subst work?
01:14:58 <ChrisMorgan> Try subst /help
01:15:34 <pa_5740> ChrisMorgan: is this a Windows XP program?
01:15:51 <ChrisMorgan> Included in the OS since Windows 98 and maybe earlier.
01:16:00 <ChrisMorgan> Command-line utility
01:16:10 <sar3th> subst /?

19:17:19 <GizmoBot> computerfreaker is working on KidSafe and Iron Portable, and would very much like to have folks test them and give feedback.
19:18:13 <computerfreaker> .tell pa_5740 You can contact the CPU-Z devs at http://www.cpuid.com/contact.html, and the GPU-Z devs at w1zzard@techpowerup.com. Thanks!
19:18:13 <GizmoBot> computerfreaker: I'll pass that on when pa_5740 is around.
19:19:19 <computerfreaker> .tell ChrisMorgan Thanks for that detailed test of Iron Portable. I really appreciate it!
19:19:20 <GizmoBot> computerfreaker: I'll pass that on when ChrisMorgan is around.

19:34:42 <computerfreaker> Gizmokid2005: thanks for the FYI. I've sent them via PM before, but I prefer putting them in public so people don't need to sign in to #portableapps to get them.
19:35:21 <Gizmokid2005> Ummm... computerfreaker, GizmoBot won't send tells until he's seen the person speak, so they have to talk in #portableapps or #portableapps-ot
19:35:25 <Gizmokid2005> or #gizmokid2005
19:35:33 <Gizmokid2005> and then the tells are sent in PM
19:35:57 <computerfreaker> yeah, I know, but the messages will still show up in the IRC logs this way, and both Chris and pa_5740 sometimes read the logs.
19:36:51 <computerfreaker> It's probably pointless, but there have been times when I picked up a tell via the logs, and only signed in to reply (like today, for example - I came to reply to a message from pa_5740)
19:42:12 <Gizmokid2005> You can use memoserv as well

20:09:44 <pa_5740> JohnTHaller: I read the areas on the forums concerning how to put Flash on FF Portable, but one concern that I have is this: when some people suggest either copying the file(s) necessary for Flash to work, or are extracting the files from the installer, isn't that violating the EULA for Flash? Sorry for the long message.

22:36:22 <Gringoloco> ChrisMorgan: did you get my message about the clsid's?
22:36:30 <ChrisMorgan> No
22:37:14 <Gringoloco> if you (we) would ever need the CLSID's, we can find them with ITypeInfo->GetTypeAttr()
22:37:59 <Gringoloco> I got a C script which can read them and all other info within the dll's
22:39:44 <ChrisMorgan> The bit I've found a bit confusing is that CLSID doesn't seem to be well-defined.
22:40:41 <Gringoloco> If you mean that it's all a bit difficult to understand ? Then, yes I agree :)
22:41:02 <ChrisMorgan> Meaning, you have your keys HKLM\Software\Classes\CLSID\{000000000000-0000-0000-0000-00000000} - from that I had thought earlier that a CLSID was a GUID. Also the file types when linked with such a thing would have ...\CLSID\={0000..0}
22:41:16 <ChrisMorgan> Whereas it seems now that it's just a plain hex number.
22:42:29 <sar3th> every Class ID is a Global Unique ID
22:42:37 <Gringoloco> It seems to be some kind of link to the specific function within the library
22:43:46 <sar3th> http://translate.google.de/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.winfaq.de%2Ffaq_html%2FContent%2Ftip0000%2Fonlinefaq.php%3Fh%3Dtip0313.htm&sl=de&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8
22:44:11 <Gringoloco> Anyhow, for what it's worth, I was playing with some scripts today and found some 'way' to register a library in a limited acount
22:47:23 <ChrisMorgan> DLL server or type library or both?
22:48:39 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: it's interesting how the translation from that page turns {} into ()
22:50:52 <Gringoloco> flash10h.ocx, flash file for IE, I could only register it as a typelibrary (RegisterTypeLibForUser())and then manually add the clsid's and other classes into HKCU. It's a bit of a hack atm, but I was amazed it actually worked
22:51:43 <Gringoloco> it didn't affect HKLM at all
22:56:10 <ChrisMorgan> Ah yes, I did observe that ForUser thing. But it doesn't add quite all? What needed to be done on top of it?
22:57:57 <ChrisMorgan> And, is there any way DLL server registration could be done like that.
22:59:14 <Gringoloco> I'm looking into it, but probably the first prority should be to get it all done in the ordinary way. I'm having to learn a lot about this all
23:00:13 <ChrisMorgan> So, are you going to be the one to implement it all in PAL?
23:00:41 <ChrisMorgan> I rather think you know what you're doing with it more than I do.
23:01:48 <Gringoloco> That's ok, but as you know I do not have much time aswell.
23:02:20 <Gringoloco> Tomorrow I should have the wildcards all fixed and tested, thought
23:03:22 <ChrisMorgan> OK. Don't worry about how long it takes, there's lots of documentation I need to write for it too and we're not ready for a release yet.
