09:08:39 <ChrisMorgan> pa_9978: do you want help with something?
09:08:47 <pa_9978> yes please.
09:08:52 <pa_9978> I am new to irc...

09:09:54 <ChrisMorgan> I can hear you. If you wish help, please just ask your question.
09:09:57 <pa_9978> ChrisMorgan: Im new to irc... schould I write your name in front of every sentence ?
09:10:14 <ChrisMorgan> It will make sure that I notice it, but you don't need to at all.
09:10:39 <Variability> good morning
09:10:47 <pa_9978> Morning
09:11:43 <pa_9978> I would like to install a 'normal' program on portable apps... How do I do that ?
09:12:30 <ChrisMorgan> What's the app?
09:12:46 <pa_9978> Schould i run the installer and adress the usb-drive:\PortableApps as install dir or schould I install on c:\ and move id ?
09:12:54 <pa_9978> move It?---
09:13:09 <ChrisMorgan> First of all, try http://portableapps.com/search/node to see if there's already a test version available of it.
09:13:56 <pa_9978> Ok there is og this one, but what if there where not ?
09:14:08 <ChrisMorgan> If not, copying it will be the first thing to try. It may or may not work - and it's unlikely that it will run portably (keeping its settings and all). To see how to get it to show up in the menu, http://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#addingotherapps
09:15:33 <pa_9978> Yes I read that one, but cannot see whether I schould install on c:\ and move the app. og install on x:\portableapps\
09:16:15 <ChrisMorgan> Depends. When making portable apps, my general tactic would be to install to C: and copy, then I can run the uninstaller on the local machine to get rid of it, easily.
09:16:41 <pa_9978> OK. Thanks that answer my question.
09:16:45 <pa_9978> Have a nice!

23:10:27 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: you may wish to read eTek's reply at http://www.sweethome3d.com/support/forum/viewthread_thread,1788#7669 - it's not all I'd hoped for. I'll be providing more info and asking a couple more questions.
23:13:32 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, provide more info. And rather than having it in root, it may make more sense to do an EULA on install (since most of our users won't browse into it anyway).
23:13:51 <JohnTHaller> Odd that he didn't object to Winpenpack calling it X-Sweethome3D
23:14:37 <ChrisMorgan> And that post of theirs was purely an informational "we've made this." post, whereas here I'm asking for more co-operation.
23:14:47 <ChrisMorgan> With the 3D models I did put the licenses in because they weren't GPL.
23:15:16 <ChrisMorgan> But for the main app, it not being /necessary/, I didn't put it in. If it'll satisfy him though then I will, no big deal :-)
23:16:08 <ChrisMorgan> Except that then a string in the Installer is wrong - "you must accept the terms" would instead be the "provided for informational purposes only" string (can't remember if it comes as an NSIS option/string)
23:16:30 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, also let him know that we'd be happy to do the work and pass it off to him to use as his main portable version (called whatever he'd like). And that showing it on PA.c would get it in front of millions.
23:16:43 <ChrisMorgan> THAT's a big point.
23:17:12 <JohnTHaller> we're in the top 5000 website worldwide or thereabouts now
23:17:53 <ChrisMorgan> Can I say that cross-platform portability is something that we're thinking about in the distant future? (I know I "intend" to look at it some time.)
23:18:35 <JohnTHaller> sure
23:18:43 <ChrisMorgan> Or maybe I'll just explain a bit about what ours is for and why.
23:19:02 <Variability> is there any interest on the greek domain or shall i continue it independantly as global web catalogue with legal portable applications as it was my plan?
23:19:21 <JohnTHaller> We're happy to have him review and approve the release. And we're happy to adjust the splash as needed. And include a note about the trademark used with permission.
23:19:40 <ChrisMorgan> i.portableapps.com for Mac apps :P
23:20:02 <JohnTHaller> Variability: I'm not sure what you're looking for in terms of interest at the moment other than what we'd discussed previously.
23:21:07 <Variability> we've discusses but we didnt confirm something or not. you suggested a greek version in combination of the greek domain too, if it is not to be done i have to know it
23:21:20 <Variability> discussed*
23:22:02 <JohnTHaller> Variability: Yes, we will be debuting a Greek version of the suite and our software at some point in the next couple months. The branding will be portableapps.com, of course, not portableapps.gr because that domain is not under our control.
23:22:54 <Variability> ok thank you :)
23:22:57 *** Variability has parted #portableapps (None)
23:25:14 <ChrisMorgan> Cross-platform portability including settings would be harder than he thinks for SH3D, I believe. It uses java.util.prefs, which varies significantly in implementation between OSes - on Windows, it's in the registry, on Linux/OSX it's in a file (with a different file format too, I believe).
23:26:16 <ChrisMorgan> By no means impossible though - in fact if he wanted I'd be quite happy to play with making it cross-platform portable with shell scripts next to the .exe file to convert and run it all. It'd be fun :D
23:29:07 <JohnTHaller> Hehe
23:30:09 <ChrisMorgan> Steve has cross-platform support for Toucan (possibly a slightly different case, but never mind about that)
23:32:41 <ZachThibeau> PChat is cross platform as well settings work with linux as well in linux :P
23:32:59 <ZachThibeau> howdy btw :P
23:33:13 <ChrisMorgan> Hey ZachThibeau :-)
23:34:01 <ZachThibeau> whats up?
23:34:02 <ChrisMorgan> Got any plans for making the portable version run in Linux too (a separate download, naturally, like Toucan)?
23:34:20 <ZachThibeau> I'd have no objections
23:36:37 <ChrisMorgan> Hmm... OS X comes with Python, doesn't it? Python'd be a suitable language for writing a launcher library in, I think, for Linux/OS X. Too much to do at the moment, and the existing Windows-bound PortableApps.com Launcher is higher priority anyway.
23:37:17 <ZachThibeau> actually it doesn't come with python but at python.org there are python binaries
23:37:26 <JohnTHaller> ChrisMorgan: You give any more thought to full path portability in PAL as opposed to just drive letters? It could help us gain more traction with some vendors.
23:37:35 <JohnTHaller> Cloud vendors, I mean
23:37:58 <ChrisMorgan> 2.1 has PAL:PackagePartialDir which is \PortableApps\AppNamePortable
23:38:39 <JohnTHaller> Cool, whiuch is what we'll need. I'm gonna build it into our custom launchers, too (or update them to PAL)
23:39:56 <ChrisMorgan> And PAL:LastPackagePartialDir of course
23:41:19 <ChrisMorgan> Also what do you think of adding support for UNC paths by making "drive letter" be \\computer\drive? I'd need to play around and see how the various NSIS commands work from a UNC path to make sure they work. And it'd still have a [Launch]:UNC=yes like [Launch]:DirectoryMoving=yes (default: warn)
23:41:21 <JohnTHaller> You tracking them in the INI?
23:42:07 <ChrisMorgan> No, they're always just straight environment variables. There's no searching for particular variables in the INI file anywhere. (Not sure if that's what you meant?)
23:42:21 <JohnTHaller> No. I mean track the full path between launches
23:44:46 <ChrisMorgan> Ah, in Data\settings\AppNamePortable.ini? Yes, that's where PAL:LastPackagePartialDir gets it from.
23:44:54 <ChrisMorgan> *AppNamePortableSettings.ini
23:45:21 <JohnTHaller> Thought so. If it doesn't exist (say after an upgrade from a PAL 2.0 INI) are you gonna construct it based on the previous drive letter and current path?
23:46:00 <JohnTHaller> Oh wait, it's partialdir (\portableapps\appnameportable\) so if it doesn't exist, you'll just default it to the current partialpath correct?
23:46:34 <ChrisMorgan> Yes
23:46:51 <JohnTHaller> Cool. Any thoughts on a 2.1 eta?
23:46:53 <ChrisMorgan> So that find/replace sees it's the same as last time and skips the replacement.
23:47:36 <ChrisMorgan> I need to get back to working on it. TODO: document XML and wildcards, then release Alpha/Beta (not sure which yet) 1
23:53:54 *** BjornH has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
23:55:07 <ChrisMorgan> So as for an ETA... well, then it'll need testing. The wildcards stuff in particular has changed the code of some bits significantly, and while Gringoloco tested all cases he could think of, it'll still want a bit of real-world testing.
23:55:34 <JohnTHaller> Of course
