02:02:04 <ChrisMorgan> DADSGETNDOWN: I've never tried it; you'd probably get better support from the The Mana World team too
02:02:17 <ChrisMorgan> But it shouldn't be an issue with the portable version.
02:02:26 <ChrisMorgan> More likely you're not doing something quite right.
02:04:12 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: When it first starts you have to login, username and pw, or you can click (register) then type a username and pw and confirm pw, but it gets that error, thanks for seeing my question.
02:04:38 <ChrisMorgan> So then, after registering have you tried using that username and password to log in?
02:05:41 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: it gets that error, adn yes I have tried it on both screens :P a couple few times..
02:06:23 <ChrisMorgan> Well, I can't help you with it, I'm afraid, and I doubt anyone else in here can either. You'd do better trying the TMW team.
02:06:33 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: it does automatically put in a server and port, I wonder if they have changed or somehting.
02:07:05 <DADSGETNDOWN> Oh at their website ?..
02:12:31 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: Hey there, for future reference on registering, I just read at their website you have to use the web form the client is disabled..
02:12:57 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: Thanks for the info and time..
02:13:02 <ChrisMorgan> You're welcome.
02:14:08 <DADSGETNDOWN> ChrisMorgan: Oh hey here's a chat problem, when I type /help it does not show anything
02:14:41 <ChrisMorgan> I think with the Freenode thingy it comes up in a different tab - look in the top left corner
02:17:04 <DADSGETNDOWN> Oh yes it appears it is in the (status) tab.. Thanks again...

04:17:10 <JohnTHaller> Anything new since earlier?
04:18:37 <ZachThibeau> hey John
04:18:41 <JohnTHaller> hi ZachThibeau
04:18:45 <ZachThibeau> actually I have something new :D
04:18:49 <JohnTHaller> sup?
04:18:51 <ZachThibeau> spell check in PChat finally works
04:18:59 <JohnTHaller> Ah nice. A lot of work?
04:19:13 <ZachThibeau> actually surprising no
04:20:01 <ZachThibeau> aspell was the issue, figured out enchant also utilizes myspell which is supported in firefox too and is what xchat on linux would normally use too
04:20:56 <JohnTHaller> ah. so do you need a new release or just updated instructions?
04:21:20 <ZachThibeau> actually it would be a new release but I'm not ready to do a new release just yet
04:21:33 <ZachThibeau> have some other stuff to work out first
04:22:26 <ZachThibeau> working on graphical smilies and once implemented this will be the last major release for the 1.x line other than bug fixes until 2.0 is ready
04:22:35 <JohnTHaller> ah cool
04:23:39 <ZachThibeau> plus I also need to test the spell checking languages and make sure they are all there, hate to see someone use spanish and get PChat telling them it should be an english word :P
04:23:53 <ChrisMorgan> ZachThibeau: so PChat is really becoming a fork (or branch?), not just a free build as I think it was to be originally?
04:24:22 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, zach has been adding a lot to it and it's coming into its own
04:24:59 <ZachThibeau> converting pretty much from c to c++
04:25:28 <ZachThibeau> majority of the core had to be rewritten to fit with the planned wxwidgets UI currently in development
04:25:46 <ZachThibeau> while still maintaining the gtk ui as well
04:25:53 <ChrisMorgan> That's what I was about to ask :-)
04:25:56 <ZachThibeau> temporarily anyways
04:27:32 <ZachThibeau> finally disabled transparency that some users were trying to use in windows that made them crash the client
04:27:50 <ChrisMorgan> On Windows, wxWidgets feels native, and except for some windows like the file picker, GTK does too (excluding the possibility of not having the windows theme as you have had). On Ubuntu, GTK /is/ native - but wxWidgets is regularly horrible. Chunks of the BPBible GUI are woeful in Ubuntu.
04:28:24 <ZachThibeau> I find thats more related to the wxwidgets python bindings really
04:28:41 <ZachThibeau> back when keryx was using wxpython it didn't look to good
04:28:45 <ChrisMorgan> Surely it couldn't be though? It's still boiling down to wxWidgets.
04:28:45 <JohnTHaller> so wxwidgets + C/C++ = more native look on *nix?
04:28:53 <ZachThibeau> but c++ wxwidgets looks best
04:29:23 <ChrisMorgan> Definitely not wxPython. And I find it hard to believe that it'd be any different using wxWidgets directly if you're using the same classes.
04:29:48 <ZachThibeau> this is what I'm observing from my point of view
04:29:50 <ChrisMorgan> And as for Qt, I've found it to look perfectly native on all platforms - though my brothers both disagree with me (probably for historic reasons, I think).
04:30:04 <ZachThibeau> qt is bloated and buggy
04:30:18 *** paigedeeare has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
04:30:19 <ZachThibeau> there are several bugs that haven't been fixed since 4.6.1 rc
04:30:37 <ZachThibeau> and they are at 4.7 now and bugs are still there
04:30:43 <JohnTHaller> Qt is huge unfortunately
04:30:49 <ChrisMorgan> That's the traditional view, but I haven't found it myself - though it's bigger than I'd like (as are GTK and wxWidgets).
04:30:59 <ZachThibeau> ever since nokia took over qt it's gone down hill imho
04:31:02 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: depends on what you use. It's *not* huge in general.
04:31:16 <ChrisMorgan> Anyhow, at this juncture I need to vanish into a puff of smoke. G'bye.
04:32:42 <JohnTHaller> gnight man
04:32:54 <JohnTHaller> I need to head to bed, too. Gotta finish off this cold.
04:33:02 <Gizmokid2005> Gotta gree with ChrisMorgan here
04:33:09 <Gizmokid2005> Qt is probably the most expandable library
04:33:18 <Gizmokid2005> works on nearly /any/ device on the market today
04:33:26 <Gizmokid2005> whereas wxWidgets, GTK, etc don't.
04:33:33 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, but it's bloated due to the huge library. At least on Windows.
04:33:43 <Gizmokid2005> it certainly can be, thats for sure.
04:33:52 <JohnTHaller> A hello world app is huge unless you do custom compilation settings.
04:33:53 <Gizmokid2005> it depends on how it's used, but the base size of it is far from small
04:34:02 <Gizmokid2005> yep
04:34:20 <Gizmokid2005> but you can take all that same code and compile for windows, linux, osx, and most mobile platforms
04:34:27 <Gizmokid2005> with only compilation target changes
04:35:07 <JohnTHaller> sort of. There are quite a few bugs unique to each platform. Like exponential growth of directory processing on Windows making it take minutes on modern machines to get all files in a directory if it has over 1000 files in it.
04:35:49 <Gizmokid2005> Right. I'm not saying it doesn't have it's problems, every language does at some point, but it's definitely the most flexible you can use.
04:35:53 <Gizmokid2005> even with it's large size

13:17:04 <ChrisMorgan> Erk. Puybaret has /not/ moved in the direction I had hoped: http://www.sweethome3d.com/support/forum/viewthread_thread,1788#7751
13:20:56 <Gizmokid2005> ChrisMorgan: sounds like someone really has more of an ego problem than anything.
13:21:23 <ChrisMorgan> I think he's missing a couple of crucial points in what open source actually means :-(
13:21:34 <Gizmokid2005> that is probably true as well
13:22:05 <Gizmokid2005> unfortunately, I don't see you being able to pursuade him otherwise
13:22:11 <Gizmokid2005> is it a full GPL2+/3 app?
13:22:17 <ChrisMorgan> Yes
13:22:38 <ChrisMorgan> Though it uses third party things under a few other licenses
13:23:03 <ChrisMorgan> For users, open source means free, means you don't need to worry about the license. The user never needs to accept the GPL - it explicitly says so.
13:23:11 <Gizmokid2005> Right
13:23:21 <Gizmokid2005> I think he needs some edumacation on what the GPL really is
13:24:27 <ChrisMorgan> 'Cos I'm afraid I'm not really encouraged to do any further development of Sweet Home 3D Portable as it stands at the moment...
13:24:54 <Gizmokid2005> I've been there myself. Theoretically you could release it anyways and just do it as a standard release as we always have.
13:24:57 <Gizmokid2005> since it is GPL
13:25:08 <ChrisMorgan> Except that the name is a registered trademark.
13:25:31 <Gizmokid2005> ahh yeah, just see that.
13:25:33 <Gizmokid2005> in May 09
13:25:33 <ChrisMorgan> And I think renaming it would get him /completely/ on the wrong side.
13:25:38 <ChrisMorgan> Yeah.
13:25:46 <Gizmokid2005> right
13:25:58 <Gizmokid2005> maybe have john talk to him a bit.
13:26:29 <ChrisMorgan> That's really the only reason I talked to them at all. Otherwise I might just have mentioned it to them and asked if they wanted to promote it themselves.
13:26:34 <ChrisMorgan> I'm sorta hoping db4tech will chip in and defend our position and try to explain it too.
13:27:03 <ChrisMorgan> He's pretty influential there, having developed the Advanced Rendering Plug-in which everyone uses and which is now being integrated into 30.
13:27:04 <ChrisMorgan> 3.0
13:27:58 <Gizmokid2005> We can only hope. It just seems that he's in it more for the ego boost than anything...I mean, users aren't going to see the license if they launch it from a shortcut in the normal install either
13:28:10 <Gizmokid2005> he could put all the "recognition" in the about of the app
13:29:14 <ChrisMorgan> I don't know, it's just slightly confusing to me.
13:32:55 <ChrisMorgan> He seems to be a one-man company, so there's not even really anyone else to get a balanced view or to appeal to.
13:33:09 <Gizmokid2005> pretty much like PA.c
13:40:23 <ChrisMorgan> Not really - we don't have others working on the Platform but we do have a number on other aspects; you, me, etc.
13:40:56 <ChrisMorgan> Whereas I think the closest support he gets is from db4tech, who is still "just" a contributor, not on the core development team. (I may be wrong.)

16:50:21 <Delano> Anyone here?
16:50:39 <JohnTHaller> hi Delano
16:50:48 <Delano> 'owdy
16:51:06 <Delano> I'm curious if there's any good programs for turning applications portable
16:51:19 <Delano> I've worked with uniextract, but is there anything else?
16:51:40 <JohnTHaller> uniextract doesn't make an app portable. it's just for getting files out of an installer without installing. and it's very hit and miss
16:52:03 <Delano> Yep
16:52:31 <Delano> What can you recommend?
16:52:31 <Delano> Preferably free
16:52:58 <JohnTHaller> You make apps portable by handling where they store data. They need analysis with something like Regshot so you can see what registry keys they use and APPDATA directories. Then something like PA.c Launcher to handle redirecting or moving all those bits. http://portableapps.com/apps/development/portableapps.com_launcher
16:54:17 <Delano> Okay, thanks
16:54:33 <Delano> Does pa.com only accept open source?
16:55:02 <JohnTHaller> Nope. We do freeware now and will shortly accept commercial apps for inclusion once they have permission from us.
16:55:39 <Delano> Very nice
16:55:51 <Delano> I would like to suggest emsisoft emergency kit
16:56:23 <Delano> Excellent anti-malware portable app
16:56:48 <JohnTHaller> Post a note in Request Apps. With something like that we need permission from the publisher.
16:57:55 <Delano> Thanks, will do
16:58:03 <Delano> And thanks for the head's-up
