IRC Log from 2010-10-15

00:04:27 <ZachThibeau> apparently John the issue still exists in CoolPlayer+ Portable
00:04:57 <ZachThibeau> I'm reading a report about the issue and some people say it can be reproduced in the Portable Version
00:05:18 *** pa_0452 has quit (Quit: Page closed)
00:05:19 <ZachThibeau> either way I'l try and get it patched up
00:05:23 <JohnTHaller> I ditched the interface, so you can't load a theme from the app anymore.
00:05:53 <ZachThibeau> just wish I had more information
00:06:22 <ZachThibeau> actually I just found the information I need :D
00:06:47 <ZachThibeau> according to 1 source "The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the "main_skin_check_ini_value()" function in skin.c. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow by specifying an overly long string (more than 1024 bytes) as a key in the INI file of the skin."
00:07:06 <ZachThibeau> now that I found the issue time to pacth
00:07:09 <ZachThibeau> **patch
00:10:40 <ZachThibeau> should have it ready possibly by tomorrow at the latest
00:10:46 <JohnTHaller> Cool

00:15:43 <pa_2613> how do i purn videos on to a disc after i download infrarrecorder
00:15:47 <pa_2613> burn?
00:17:33 <ZachThibeau> infrarecorder doesn't really burn videos like most other burners do, but it is possible, you will need to transcode your video so that it's the layout of a dvd (you'll have to google such a transcoder though) and then infrarecorder can burn it that way but like I said straight out infrarecorder will not burn straight avi's etc as video disks

00:18:45 <ZachThibeau> if you want to burn videos though you can use dvdstyler which will do the converting for you and then burn it to a disk or iso image while producing your own custom dvd menu
00:20:25 <pa_2613> where can i find the dvd styler? can i download it here?
00:20:40 <ZachThibeau> http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/dvdstyler_portable
00:20:55 <ZachThibeau> it pays to look at our list of available applications ;)
00:21:09 <ZachThibeau> well.. I wish it pays :P I could be rich lol
00:21:33 <pa_2613> lol
00:21:44 <pa_2613> it all so confusing
00:22:51 <pa_2613> when i clicked download it sayed it could harm your computer?
00:22:51 <ZachThibeau> not really it's all categorized by type like coolplayer, dvd styler etc are grouped in Music and Video etc, just takes a little time to get used to how it's layed out thats all
00:22:54 <pa_2613> is it safe?
00:23:19 <ZachThibeau> it's safe, you'll find most applications you download will say that, it's pretty much a windows warning
00:24:04 <pa_2613> i see...
00:24:25 <pa_2613> so whats next?
00:24:47 <pa_2613> can i go to the videos i have n drag em there
00:24:48 <pa_2613> ?
00:25:20 <ZachThibeau> the way you can tell it's safe is that it shows it's digitally signed by PortableApps.com, next is to install it to your thumbdrive or where ever, when launched all you have to do is drag your videos into the window and click the burrning disk icon on the toolbar :)
00:26:12 <pa_2613> what is the best video format?
00:26:30 <pa_2613> aspect ratio?
00:26:40 <pa_2613> and audio format?
00:27:42 <ZachThibeau> it all depends where you are located north america it's mostly ntsc audio usually aac/mp4
00:27:47 <Bensawsome> there is no best video format
00:27:55 <Bensawsome> depends wut you want
00:27:57 <Bensawsome> :P
00:32:45 <ZachThibeau> JohnTHaller: I found the exploit and it's Patched, but there is another related to the same kind of issue but related to an outdated zlib library it was using which I already updated so for now it looks like has been patched
00:33:56 <pa_2613> so what do i do next?
00:35:05 <ZachThibeau> once you imported your video's you can click the icon that looks like a burning disk
00:40:54 <pa_2613> okie.....
00:41:12 <pa_2613> and when will i know when its done...n ready for trial on my dvd?

13:16:02 <Gizmokid2005> you can't do that pa_7020

13:16:40 <pa_7020> Well... It worked for me before with a U3 memory stick
13:17:29 <Gizmokid2005> yes, because U3 doesn't use the USB autorun
13:17:37 <Gizmokid2005> it emulates a CDRom to launch the USB software.

16:11:09 <JohnTHaller> Otherwise, what you want can only be accomplished in hardware
16:12:34 <brandon___> i installed Truecrypt on the outervolume and the secure files in innervolume

16:13:20 <brandon___> dunno what happend with the other 11gb
16:13:20 <JohnTHaller> right, so you put everything on innervolume and all your stuff is protected. of course, you can only use TrueCrupt with admin rights
16:13:39 <JohnTHaller> You need to format as NTFS to make a file larger
16:14:01 <JohnTHaller> Just be sure to set security on the root to remove all special security options and then set Everyone to FullControl
16:14:03 <brandon___> so i can make like 5 mb outvolume and rest innervolume?
16:14:42 <brandon___> dont want to install Truecrypt on every pc im connecting to so i want to keep that portable just to mount the drive
16:14:58 <JohnTHaller> You can only mount it on drives where you have admin rights
16:16:37 <brandon___> hm, ok was also looking for something like http://www.newsoftwares.net/usb-secure/
16:16:54 <brandon___> but a free version
16:18:14 <JohnTHaller> If it doesn't require admin rights, then it's not actually secure, it's just hiding files with a couple tricks and can be worked around. Or...
16:18:26 <JohnTHaller> Or it just mounts files, in which case you can't mount it as a drive and can't run apps off it.

16:26:38 <JohnTHaller> To fully password protect a drive and be able to run it anywhere without admin rights *requires* a drive that supports that in hardware/firmware.
16:28:42 <brandon___> like u3 you mean?
16:29:17 <JohnTHaller> U3 does support it in hardware, yes. But they've been discontinued. Most manufacturers have a drive with password protection available. It will usually cost a few extra $

17:33:34 <Drive-Dude> Is this legel man. Because Dude I dont wanna go to jail or whatever. I dont wanna be that guy. You know Little mr pefect. But is it legel to use that kind of software. I am taking about softwares like that one I just did see right now ( New: DamnVid) on PortableApps.com

17:44:26 <Drive-Dude> It really freaked me out
17:45:48 <Drive-Dude> I dont wanna people to think I download things inlegelly
17:46:21 <dboki89> Btw, on another note, we "talked" over IRC a few months ago, and if I recall correctly, you're not in an area where FBI has jurisdiction :D (neither am I)

17:50:45 <dboki89> A note to John (or whomever): for some reason, the Download button for FreeMat Portable throws me a SF page saying "We are unable to display the page you requested.", with a logo of half-heated anvil... I tried other apps, and DL links worked. It's only this one DL button which doesn't...
17:51:28 <dboki89> Drive-Dude: yea :) For details, we might better take it to PM than leave it here "in the open"
17:55:28 <Gizmokid2005> JohnTHaller: I'm here finally :)
