02:32:05 <pa_2434> Hello I am look for a portable app that will allow you to setup a virtual cd or dvd rom. Is there one out there?
02:33:18 <Bensawsome> pa_2434 that requires drivers. Drivers require administrative rights to isntall. Because it requires administravte rights it can't be made into a portable app
02:33:22 <Bensawsome> none of them can
02:35:14 <OliverK|Away> pa_2434: you could use 7zip to extract the image if its a iso file
02:36:15 <pa_2434> Oh ok. 7zip can read ISO files. Ok let me try that.

02:51:48 <OliverK|Away> no problem. Enjoy

02:57:37 <pa_2434> Is it true that some portable apps can bypass security promissions?
03:01:57 <OliverK> pa_2434: depends
03:02:40 <OliverK> for instance, you can probably use firefox even if you don't have install rights on the computer. But you're not really bypassing so much as just running the program from somwhere else
03:03:28 *** OliverK is now known as OliverK|Away
03:11:01 <pa_2434> Ok, What does it depend on? Can a Virtual CD/dvd rom program be wroten to bypass administrative rights?

05:52:26 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: you've heard of the large number of these large spammers we've been having?
05:54:12 <JohnTHaller> The number of spammers seems to be about as frequent as usual. We've had an uptick in the multi-post spammers in the past week, yes. What has it been, 3 miulti-posters?
05:56:43 <ChrisMorgan> About nine.
05:56:57 <JohnTHaller> One had like 70 posts. How about the others?
05:56:59 <ChrisMorgan> I've killed four, Zach has had to deal with five or so.
05:57:22 <JohnTHaller> I'm just talking about the ones posting more than say 2/3 posts
05:57:28 <ChrisMorgan> Approximate figures of those that I know of: 70, 90, 250, 300.
05:57:39 <JohnTHaller> Wow. Didn't realize it was that bad.
05:57:41 <ChrisMorgan> It seems that they just never stop until stopped.
05:57:52 <ChrisMorgan> Yeah, nor did I until I heard from Zach.
05:59:43 <JohnTHaller> Do they post the exact same content for each post or vary it?
06:03:02 <ChrisMorgan> It gets varied but each one posts approximately the same content.
06:03:16 <JohnTHaller> approximately =/= exactly, unfortunately
06:03:23 <ChrisMorgan> Naturally.
06:03:50 <JohnTHaller> There are currently two options. 1. Mollom, which uses internal bayesian and blocking rules but costs money above a certain threshold.
06:03:53 <ChrisMorgan> Not sure if Mollom would block the user registrations successfully; if it did, the problem would be fixed; if it didn't, it would just alleviate it for the first hundred of a day.
06:04:02 <ChrisMorgan> You can still use 100 free a day.
06:04:27 <JohnTHaller> Mollom, unfortunately, blocks several legitimate users and provides no way to whitelist them or fix its own errors. It was a disaster the last time we implemented it.
06:05:15 <ChrisMorgan> I think those issues were fairly localised though due to content and based on the information you gave was improved?
06:05:31 <JohnTHaller> It was IP and network based. There was no workaround. They never contacted me with an update.
06:06:14 <ChrisMorgan> :-(
06:06:43 <JohnTHaller> The only workaround would be in Drupal to create a new class of user and make them immune from using Mollom and then attempt to address that on an individual basis. Unfortunately, Mollom doesn't allow for the user to report an error, so it would be entirely manually on our part via email.
06:06:48 <JohnTHaller> Many users will simply leave.
06:10:44 <ChrisMorgan> I think the problem is not as bad as you make out. But I don't have statistics to back it.
06:11:25 <ChrisMorgan> Anyway, another solution would be a module to limit posting for new users to 10 an hour or something like that. And block them automatically above some threshold.
06:11:45 <JohnTHaller> I got the emails myself from multiple users. Mollom had no user-controllable features at the time and no immediate plans for them. That alone made me pull it from the site instantly. *NO* feedback process at all to fix false positives.
06:17:33 <JohnTHaller> Ok. I have enabled the Spam module (option 2).
06:18:10 <JohnTHaller> I have bayesian turned off (it always had issues). Duplicates on, so 2 duplicate posts from the same IP results in both being unpublished. 3 results in the IP being banned.
06:18:45 <JohnTHaller> And I have custom filters on and we can add custom URLs to that to permanently block some of those video conversion scammers.
06:18:56 <ChrisMorgan> Problem is search for "drupal user post rate" and related phrases comes up with rating modules, not stuff to control post rate.
06:19:06 <ChrisMorgan> The video conversion stuff is sadly now small fry...
06:19:16 <JohnTHaller> There is curerently no post rate module I know of.
06:19:41 <JohnTHaller> Please track URLs advertised in spam from now on so we can block them.
06:20:45 <ChrisMorgan> OK, will do when I can.
06:21:23 <ChrisMorgan> I've heard that there's a thing for WordPress which blocks more than e.g. three posts an hour, but such rates would be fairly useless to us the way we work.
06:21:42 <ChrisMorgan> Likewise searching for "post speed" gets people asking how to speed up their drupal site... *sigh*
06:22:01 <ChrisMorgan> And "throttle" would get the throttle module...
06:22:15 <ChrisMorgan> I'm not aware of any, but it's worth looking every year or three.
06:22:43 <JohnTHaller> how about frequency
06:23:43 <JohnTHaller> already got the 3 video scammers in the custom filter ruleset
06:23:46 <ChrisMorgan> "frequency of running cron" ;-)
06:24:48 <JohnTHaller> just had a spam run. blocked acct
06:25:54 <JohnTHaller> ah, yes this is a more advanced spam bot being manually run after the login. it purposely varies the comment to avoid duplicate checking by anti-spam measures.
06:26:33 <ChrisMorgan> Naturally. Any ideas from it or will you clean up? (Or me)
06:26:41 <JohnTHaller> I'll get it
06:26:51 <JohnTHaller> They do use the same URLs in every post, though
06:27:37 <ChrisMorgan> http://portableapps.com/admin/content/comment is the current easiest way to do it... ideally it'd be something like http://portableapps.com/user/161695/total-block which would block the user and delete all content by them. I haven't written the module yet though.
06:28:04 <JohnTHaller> Along with a single URL in each post linking to the posts in another Drupal site. So, yes, this is a Drupal-specific spambot/
06:28:28 <JohnTHaller> Check the last link in each post. Links to divx, wpressd, etc.
06:29:07 <ChrisMorgan> Never heard of them.
06:29:27 <JohnTHaller> labs.divx.com is a Divx Drupal-based site
06:29:37 *** OliverK is now known as OliverK|Away
06:29:40 <JohnTHaller> they're legit sites
06:29:54 <ChrisMorgan> But spammified by their bots.
06:30:44 <JohnTHaller> They spammed in the forum on labs.divx.com. And then had a link to that in the spam on our site. They probably linked to others as well. My guess is they include a legit URL to mess with spam bots.
06:30:49 <ChrisMorgan> Well, 10 minutes, 102 comments. Seems to generally do around 10 a minute from what I've seen, but the time between posts varies between something like 1 and 30 seconds.
06:30:58 <JohnTHaller> Cleaned uip
06:32:45 * ChrisMorgan thinks he'll ask on Stack Overflow about it

23:26:15 <ChrisMorgan> ZachThibeau: unsupported since 2008. Mollom is the recommended one now and is generally better than akismet.
