14:25:44 <dboki89> Hi Feliks, how may we help you? | Disclaimer: I'm not a PortableApps developer, just a user like yourself
14:27:10 <Feliks> may you know the categorizer (http://portableapps.com/node/8091) - i tried to use it with one of the new Platforms (1.6 and 2.0 Beta5) and it doesn't work really. Is there any other way to get that categories?
14:28:53 <dboki89> Feliks: this might be the reason --> "Aug 10th- Updated to properly handle the 1.1 Beta Menu (as well as 1.0)"
14:29:22 <dboki89> you said it yourself, you're using menu 1.6 and 2.0 beta 5
14:30:05 <dboki89> so that "Categorizer" seems to be quite outdated (originaly posted in 2007)
14:31:10 <Feliks> Do you know another software or trick to do the same in the new Menus?
14:32:09 <dboki89> I must point out that I've never actually used the "Categorizer", just posting my opinion. I don't een know how exactly it "hacks" the PA Platform..
14:32:16 <dboki89> sorry, I don't know of any
14:32:40 <dboki89> but it is supposed to be in the PA Platform itself once it's out of beta
14:34:15 <dboki89> you know, categories is probably the most requested feature (or at least second most requested) :D
14:34:34 <Feliks> So I hope it will be out of beta soon ;) I'm using PortableApps now for a while but now I bought a new stick and I want to make a "perfect" platform for me ;)
14:34:54 <Feliks> And what is the most requested one? ;)
14:35:01 <dboki89> so just try to be patient, and it will "eventually" arriwe :p :) (I hope)
14:35:28 <Feliks> well I also hope that I can change the folder paths when it is out of beta :D
14:35:41 <Feliks> well I try but it's so hard :P
14:35:56 <dboki89> I hope so too. That's been asked for as well
14:36:41 <dboki89> and also, portable file associations, and the updater were pretty requested
14:38:11 <Feliks> Well for the portable file associations there exists a work around but for the categorizer and the folder path I don't know how to manage that now^^
14:40:02 <dboki89> :P you know, there IS a workaround --> (1) try another Menu :P :P or (2) edit the source and recompile (not as easy as it sounds) :P
14:40:32 <dboki89> but I wouldn't recommend either, especially not the latter
14:41:58 <dboki89> the thing with different menus is, I use PStart, many use ASuite and similar, but for the average PA user I think PA Platform is the easiest one
14:42:37 <dboki89> it does all the work for you, while I have to manually add every single app in my PStart
14:42:56 <Feliks> and the most pretty one ;)
14:43:13 <Feliks> well the workaround is the thing with the usbagent from heise
14:43:28 <dboki89> to each his own :P
14:43:36 <Feliks> ^^
14:49:45 <Feliks> Well so I think I start my work with Beta5 and hope for the final one ;)
14:50:55 <Feliks> btw - can I use the Update function of firefox/thunderbird or is this still tricky?
14:52:18 <dboki89> um, I *believe* it's still tricky, but I *know* it's recommended to use PA releases, instead of updating from inside Firefox and Thunderbird
14:53:06 <Feliks> ok
14:53:08 <Feliks> thank you :)
14:53:33 <dboki89> you're welcome :)
14:55:17 <Feliks> Which Client do you prefer - KVIrc or PChat?
14:57:16 <dboki89> PChat
14:57:26 <dboki89> but KVIrc is nice, too :)
14:58:14 <Feliks> Ok so I try Pchat and if i don't like it I'll try KVIrc ;)
14:58:30 <dboki89> he he, so that's why you asked
14:59:36 <Feliks> yeah - i'm new in IRC, still using the Browserclient on portableapps.com ;)
15:00:19 <dboki89> personally, my first impression with KVIrc was "wow, this just looks too fancy for me", but in PChat I fealt pretty much like at home. That's the main reason why I prefer one over the other
15:00:25 *** Twinkletoes (~chatzilla@dze3bf81.brookes.ac.uk) has joined #portableapps
15:02:07 <dboki89> then, there are those small little things PChat does, like the ability to hide/unhide Join/Part messages
15:02:26 <dboki89> KVIrc dpes it as well, but not as neatly
15:03:04 *** sar3th|away is now known as sar3th
15:03:14 <Feliks> You look at PChat and it looks a bit like my first linux :D
15:03:55 <dboki89> ahaha :) yes, it is pretty linux-like :)

15:04:57 <dboki89> Windows 95 was my first one... oh wait, you're talking linux :p
15:05:26 <sar3th> PChat looks like linux because it uses gtk, which originates from linux
15:05:28 <dboki89> I believe the first linux I tried was a Puppy linux distro, can't remember the version
15:06:34 <dboki89> then I used Mint, Ubuntu, BT4 (I only tried that one, I admit I can't really use it to it's potential)
15:07:54 <dboki89> oh, yea, the first linux I tried was Knoppix, but the first one I used was a Puppy
15:08:53 <Feliks> ;)
15:09:11 <Feliks> but now i'm back to windows most the time because of the games^^

15:13:08 <Felix3> hi^^
15:13:10 <dboki89> If you have any specific questions about PChat or KVIrc, they both have their own channels here. #pchat and #kvirc. Just keep in mind that the PChat channel is often pretty quiet, and you might have to wait a while for responses
15:13:23 <bassrocks> Hm...perhaps you could help. \
15:13:29 <Felix3> ok ;)
15:13:38 <Felix3> well we can try ;)
15:13:40 <bassrocks> I know I really shouldn't, but I was kinda hoping I could find a quick and simple answer.
15:14:25 <bassrocks> I was exploring a couple weeks ago or something like that and found coding that you could save your desktop picture to your drive and when you started the suite it would load your desktop picture. I can't seam to find it again.

15:17:24 <dboki89> bassrocks: just for future reference, it's under PortableApps > Suite > Support
15:18:05 <Felix3> dboki89: using the update function in platform 2.0 Beta5 is the same stuff as using the Portableapps installer to update Firefox?
15:18:08 <dboki89> this wasn't supposed to be an off-topic channel, it's supposed to be for apps support discussions only... but I'm not qualified to judge
15:18:17 <bassrocks> Ah, ok. I was looking in all the wrong places. Thanks again!
15:19:05 <bassrocks> Does it need to be in the portableapps folder or just in the base area?
15:19:05 <dboki89> Felix3: using the update function (in PAP2.0beta5) will automatically download the latest FFP installer, and run it silently
15:19:15 <Felix3> ok thanks :)
15:19:16 <dboki89> Felix3: so yea, it's the same
15:19:22 <dboki89> you're welcome
15:19:29 <bassrocks> Nvm

15:20:35 <bassrocks> I do think so.

15:23:31 <Felix3> Can I use the same Themes for 2.0 as I used in 1.6_
15:24:03 <Felix3> sorry keyboard layout changed to English ;) Should be this in the end "?" ;)
15:25:22 <dboki89> hm... I think the themes have slightly changed since 1.6, but don't really "hold my word", as my people say
15:26:18 <Felix3> ok ;)
15:26:48 <dboki89> One important thing! When using the PAP2.0beta5 Update function, it will download a version of a program in the language the Platform is set to (if available)
15:27:08 <Felix3> Great so I'll get the German one ;)
15:27:56 <Felix3> it's just funny to look at the Translation file - there you see all the stuff like categorys, changing folder paths and so on^^

15:46:23 <Felix3> ok^^ so in former versions until 1.6 was theApp-Management part of the Options dialogue, but now they made a own Dialogue for it "Manage Apps" but this one doesn't appear in the Tanslationfiles. Do you know how it is called there? Because "manage Apps" doesn't look so pretty in a German Platform ;)
15:47:49 <Felix3> I tried ICON_MANAGE, ICON_MANAGE_APPS and ICON_APPS all these doesn't work
15:47:51 <dboki89> I believe John already said not all options/lines are yet being translated. And he's aware of it, it'll be fixed in a newer beta release

16:52:35 <Felix3> Hi John
16:53:04 <Felix3> how does your great work on platform 2 goes on? ;)
16:53:58 <JohnTHaller> it's a-going. Progressing now that the PA.c Installer update fixing the files left behind issue is out and the same patch is working in the updater.
16:56:29 <Felix3> is it possible that the \PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\DefaultData\FolderIcons\portableapps.ico is missing in Beta5? I copied it from 1.6 now.
16:56:57 <JohnTHaller> It is missing. It's a bug in the b5 release. It'll be fixed in b6.
16:57:34 <Felix3> fine :)
16:58:28 <Felix3> will the platform itself also beupdated by the new updater?
16:58:59 <JohnTHaller> Yup. Though it may not work as seamlessly as it should from b5 to b6. It should be better after that
17:00:58 <Felix3> ok
17:05:48 <JohnTHaller> Basically b5 to b6, you'll probably have to manually close the platform and updater as things are installing or something similar.
17:06:00 <Felix3> Is the translation part for "Manage Apps" also fixed in B6?
17:07:03 <JohnTHaller> Depends on the language and which ones are ready. There are a lot of new strings in b6 that won't be translated yet as well.
17:10:39 <Felix3> well if the strings are there it is no problem to translate them. But i didn't found a string for "Manage Apps" - not in the German and not in the English one
17:11:31 <JohnTHaller> Some of them don't have translation strings setup yet. I think that's one.
17:11:51 <JohnTHaller> I'm also writing a quick utility to aid in translation so people aren't manually editing INI files.
17:12:42 <Felix3> ok
17:13:20 <Felix3> what do you think how long do you need to publish B6? I just can't wait for that great piece of software ;)

17:21:22 <Felix3> There is a problem with ClamWin 0.96.2.1: you can't update the virus definitions anymore. There are 2 possibilitys: To replace a dll-file or to use 0.96.1. you may should publish it on the clamwin site

17:29:51 <Felix3> which parameters do you use to start the eject.exe if you press eject in the platform?
17:30:48 <JohnTHaller> Don't know offhand. It's in the source. Why?
17:31:34 <JohnTHaller> I just updated ClamWin Portable's definitions without issue. Have you tried resetting the app (deleting the Data directory... you lose settings)
17:32:12 <Felix3> ok il'll try this
17:33:41 <Felix3> well i just want to crypt some parts of my stick in the end so i want to use the starthere.exe from heise (i think u know it) and then a batch file first crypting the things and then the eject exe ;)

18:38:15 <ZachThibeau> none that I can think of, but it does sound like a dns issue where your computer can't resolve the address for the clamwin update server, try a reboot if it doesn't work, try updating from another computer, if it updates on reboot, then it was a dns thing, if not and you update from another computer it could be something related network wise

18:49:09 <JohnTHaller> Felix3: Did you just reinstall it or did you delete the Data directory as I suggested?
18:50:08 <Felix3> JohnTHaller: I did both and both don't work
18:51:11 <Felix3> and in the command prompt it failes because there isn't a freshclam.conf

19:12:19 <Felix3> cmd
19:12:28 <JohnTHaller> why would you see a command prompt?
19:12:50 <Felix3> no i used it because of the verbug mode

20:58:24 <JohnTHaller> We don't do RunOnExit yet but will in a future release. But on that note, crypting files on start/exit isn't really secure since the unsecure ones can be undeleted.

21:01:47 <JohnTHaller> Deleted or secure deleted. There is a difference. And on flash drives, secure delete doesn't quite work.

21:05:55 <Felix3> what do you mean with secure delete doesn't quite work?
21:06:24 <markomlm> hello @all
21:06:37 <JohnTHaller> Flash drives do wear leveling, which means that a given place on the flash drive isn't necessarily the same place you thought it was. There's an entire virtual level in between so it doesn't write to the same area too much.
21:07:05 <JohnTHaller> So, even if you tell your software to replace a given file on a flash drive with, say, all zeros, it's not really doing that.
21:08:23 <Felix3> hi @marko
21:08:29 <Felix3> oh ok thanks
21:08:54 <Felix3> i didn't know that so far
21:09:45 <JohnTHaller> Granted, reconstructing it would be much harder as pieces of it are probably wiped.
21:10:10 <JohnTHaller> Unless you have something that REALLY needs to be secured, you're fine. If you do have something that really needs to be secured, you should get a hardware encryption drive
