IRC Log from 2010-12-11

00:00:15 <ChrisMorgan> A problem I *really* don't like is that since upgrading to 10.10, the window title sometimes isn't updated when the window updates its contents. At first I thought it was a Firefox issue (tab title is last tab's title, things like that), but I've since experienced it with Pidgin and a couple of other apps, so I think it's a GNOME bug.
00:00:48 <dboki89> matthewg42: hm.. now that you mentioned Stellarium, I noticed some of the cities are misspelled in there. Where does one report it?
00:00:54 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: I think in the RSS part it would probably clutter it; in the main announcement it could fit in quite nicely.
00:01:32 <gluxon> Go ahead :)
00:01:56 <JohnTHaller> I was thinking something like altering the Read More... line to be: Read more... | Download AppName | Donate to AppName
00:01:59 <gluxon> Just wondering, what's the average for donations per month?
00:02:37 <JohnTHaller> It varies quite a bit, lemme open paypal
00:02:44 <ChrisMorgan> With "Download AppName" being a direct link?
00:03:14 <JohnTHaller> Possibly. Or maybe AppName Homepage.
00:08:28 <JohnTHaller> gluxon: About $500 last month.
00:12:25 <gluxon> Thanks. That's more than I thought.
00:12:53 <JohnTHaller> That's about average, I'd say. Unfortunately our hosting per month ranges from about $1400 to $1900 lately.
00:14:04 <gluxon> Well, then I hope the flash drive vendor deals turn out a success :)
00:14:16 <gluxon> JohnTHaller: Just wondering, how did you get the amount of users browsing this site on your homepage? There's numerous ways, but I think the one on your site seems most efficient.
00:14:41 <JohnTHaller> We don't get much from the flash deals other than distribution. The money will come from commercial software in PA.c Format.
00:15:06 <JohnTHaller> I wrote my own in ASP based on its own internal session management.
00:15:38 <JohnTHaller> Pretty much the same thing on PA.c but with PHP and the way Drupal keeps a session open (also 30 mins I believe)
00:17:37 <gluxon> Ah, thanks. I was doing a PHP script that adds IP's to an SQL, and periodically checks with a cron every 5 minutes.
00:17:57 <gluxon> It works, but I didn't like it because of the strain on resources.

13:07:00 <CruelC> 0hai. There's some apps on portableapps that are pointless to wrap
13:07:11 <CruelC> like, DOSbox
13:07:31 <CruelC> DOSbox is portable by design, so I do not understand why wrap it.
13:08:45 <ZachThibeau> because of how the platform is designed, the wrappers are designed to help store data in a more convienent manner, so stuff like the PortableApps.com Backup tool can backup your settings
13:09:35 <CruelC> but DOSbox is portable by design, it prioritizes the .conf within its folder over the appdata one
13:09:51 <CruelC> so for DOSbox, pawrap is not needed
13:10:10 <ZachThibeau> again it's because of how the platform is designed, the wrappers are designed to help store data in a more convienent manner, so stuff like the PortableApps.com Backup tool can backup your settings
13:10:42 <CruelC> It's understandable for an app that works with appdata
13:11:34 <ZachThibeau> take PChat for instance, it writes to appdata but also has a command line parameter to save settings to a different directory, the launcher is there for ease of use and in case someone wants to backup their settings with the PortableApps.combackup utility
13:11:34 <CruelC> But, some apps are portable by design. In those cases, PA-Wrap is not needed
13:12:40 <CruelC> so wrapper is kept in place for those apps, solely for paback?
13:13:43 <ZachThibeau> no just for the backup tool but keeps things organized too and other stuff but mainly it does help if you want to backup your settings with or without the backup utility
13:14:23 <CruelC> also, how to uninstall an app from PAmenu?
13:14:48 <ZachThibeau> just delete the folder :P
13:15:07 <CruelC> There's no listing file?
13:15:15 <ZachThibeau> next beta of the platform will make it easier to do within the platform itself by adding a context menu
13:16:02 <CruelC> now I have FF4 b7 and WAtomic in PAmenu
13:16:48 <ZachThibeau> oh and another thing if you are using the platform beta 5 there is an updater that will help keep you programs up to date if they are in the PortableApps.com format
13:17:37 * CruelC is using latest stable
13:18:54 <ZachThibeau> the beta is fairly stable actually, John has the discipline of strict testing to make sure it's stable before sending it to the public even if it's beta
13:23:15 <CruelC> .PAF.EXE - is it an actual EXE, or a stub/library for PA?
13:24:31 <ZachThibeau> it's an actual exe
13:26:18 <ZachThibeau> just .paf is included to differentiate our releases from standard exe filees
13:27:00 <ZachThibeau> but in short it's just an exe file
13:27:19 <ZachThibeau> nsis based installer exe file
13:27:43 <CruelC> NSIS, yea. I 7z-ed one
13:28:13 <ZachThibeau> we used to use 7z, nsis just gave us more control
13:33:49 <CruelC> My "latest stable" has "uninstall" in context
13:34:05 <CruelC> well, what I thought of as "latest stable".
13:36:31 <CruelC> but it seems to only get rid of the entry

17:48:08 <pa_8359> dboki89: I don't know either! But I'm downloading great now. The problem has been around, for me, for about 2 weeks.
17:48:32 <G87> Probably a broken script
17:49:02 <G87> and that script not being invoked by IP's that were found as making accounts
17:54:01 <pa_8359> Maybe! But I just logged off of sourceforge and it is doing the same thing as before. The browser says it is 'Waiting for ad.doubleclick.net'!
17:55:49 <pa_8359> I logged back in and it starts the download immediately again. Really strange...
18:00:48 <G87> so, some regions have problem with ad doubleclick
18:00:55 <G87> mine doesn't
18:00:59 <G87> =!=
18:06:26 <G87> ok, I reinstalled Mana World into the right place
18:06:44 <pa_8359> Well it's working now, so thanks for the listening ear!
