00:25:50 <GizmoBot> OliverK is a programmer, podcaster, html spelunker and pretty handy with a screwdriver. In short, not to be trifled with.
00:27:02 <ChrisMorgan> Typical... I go to remove Marble and WinDjView from the status page and when I go to save find Simeon has just done it!

01:21:14 <JohnTHaller> Suggestions on today's app anybody?
01:21:30 <OliverK> got a pool to vote on?
01:22:14 <JohnTHaller> Mostly this: http://portableapps.com/node/11772 http://portableapps.com/development/test http://portableapps.com/development/test/status
01:23:30 <OliverK> you can delete FAkeNES
01:24:13 <OliverK> screamer needs to be redone . . . .
01:24:18 <JohnTHaller> did anyonbe else pick up fakenes?
01:24:23 <OliverK> no
01:24:27 <OliverK> its dead anyway
01:24:31 <OliverK> no updates in like 3 years
01:24:45 <OliverK> I don't know a it even works on vista and win 7 I can't remember
01:24:49 <OliverK> it isn't worth it anyway
01:24:51 <OliverK> seriously
01:24:56 <JohnTHaller> Does the app itself work well, though? I mean it is emulating a ridiculously old system.
01:25:02 <OliverK> no
01:25:15 <OliverK> that's why I said to delete the comment
01:25:20 <JohnTHaller> already did
01:25:25 <OliverK> plus the code base is to old
01:25:49 <OliverK> let's see if I can find something . . . Got to figure out who's still around, that I've played with
01:26:46 <JohnTHaller> For things where folks are inactive, we're picking them up and updating them. One reason why I put out the word for folks to indicate they are still active in their topics several weeks back.
01:27:37 <OliverK> what about eclipse?
01:28:02 <OliverK> that's a big package though, maybe best to not release it today but tomorrow
01:28:10 <JohnTHaller> I'd like to finish up the Java licensing issue first. We're in the process of getting approval from Oracle. Hence the name change to jPortable.
01:28:20 <OliverK> k
01:28:57 <JohnTHaller> I was thinking of FreeCiv
01:29:02 <OliverK> same with anything java based I presume
01:29:04 <JohnTHaller> Current Release: http://portableapps.com/node/24343
01:29:47 <JohnTHaller> Yeah. Once Java licensing is complete, we'll have the way it installs set and can build it into the platform and have the updater pull down java whenever you have an app that needs it and it's not yet installed.
01:31:21 <OliverK> hmm, i can't see why not
01:31:29 <OliverK> never used it myself however
01:31:44 <JohnTHaller> It's pretty cool. I checked it out.
01:33:16 <OliverK> I can't speak for it, but if it works, I can't think of a reason not to
01:33:34 <JohnTHaller> I'll give it another once-over in the VM to be sure.
01:45:30 <ChrisMorgan> I want to go through Eclipse, too. Last time I did there were major issues with it. Really what it needs is PAL.
01:45:44 <OliverK> orly,
01:45:54 <OliverK> the last time I went through it, it was fine

03:15:25 <pa_7541> hello
03:15:53 <OliverK> greetings
03:16:31 <pa_7541> i had PA on my flash drive for a while and is probably way out of date.. updating each app is a nightmare .. should i just delete and start anew?
03:16:49 <OliverK> you should try the updater I think
03:17:11 <OliverK> http://portableapps.com/news/2010-07-17_-_portableapps.com_platform_2.0_beta_5_released
03:17:28 <OliverK> Otherwise, you could delete everything and start over, but you'll lose your settings
03:18:13 <pa_7541> ok. not worried about settings.. so starting new may be a better and a more streamline... correct?
03:18:34 <OliverK> why not just try the updater?
03:19:03 <pa_7541> well ... i've never done anything like that...
03:19:13 <pa_7541> so what do i need to do?
03:19:17 <pa_7541> but..
03:19:24 <OliverK> I've been using it since it came out
03:19:44 <pa_7541> when i was updting the clam.. it just took forever . i eventually cancelled it
03:19:59 <JohnTHaller> That's just the virus definitions. ANd that server is often slow.
03:20:26 <pa_7541> ok..could you just walk me through that.... if you don't mind
03:20:29 <JohnTHaller> You'll be updating your apps from the SourceForge mirror servers. Which will take the same amount of time as going and downloading them all yourself.
03:21:12 <pa_7541> i was just thinking of deleting the whole lot and just downloading the suite
03:21:57 <pa_7541> how do i do the updater.. thingy?
03:22:17 <OliverK> just download the new menu and install it
03:22:47 <OliverK> the download link is http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_2.0_Beta_5.exe?download_redirect_do_not_right_click
03:22:47 <JohnTHaller> Download this file: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_2.0_Beta_5.exe
03:23:09 <JohnTHaller> Heh, I'll leave you in OliverK's capable hands and stop butting in :)
03:23:30 <OliverK> :D
03:23:44 <OliverK> you're welcome to take over if you would like
03:25:09 <JohnTHaller> Tis ok, I'm packaging up FreeCiv at the moment for release :D
03:25:24 <OliverK> okay. pa_7541, let me know why you have it installed
03:25:47 <pa_7541> ok... the 'PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_2.0_Beta_5.exe' has been downloaded.. should i just run it?
03:25:53 <OliverK> yep
03:26:32 <pa_7541> it's been downloaded to my laptop.. by running the exe will it update my flash drive?
03:26:39 <OliverK> yep
03:26:50 <pa_7541> k.. one brb
03:26:56 <OliverK> well, it should. Just make sure it wants to install to your drive
03:28:51 <pa_7541> it's doing it's thing.. brb
03:28:56 <OliverK> k
03:29:41 <pa_7541> k.. it's done
03:29:44 <pa_7541> now..?
03:29:52 <OliverK> start the menu
03:30:07 <pa_7541> k.. and 'manage apps'?
03:30:17 <OliverK> yes
03:30:17 <pa_7541> check for updates?
03:30:23 <OliverK> yup
03:30:31 <pa_7541> k.. brb
03:30:42 <OliverK> make sure if it wants to update an app you have that one close
03:31:20 <pa_7541> oops.. my firefox is open .. i'll close and brb
03:31:26 *** pa_7541 has quit (Quit: Page closed)
03:31:27 <OliverK> okay
03:31:30 <OliverK> duur
03:31:45 <OliverK> JohnTHaller: something you should probably think about on the updater, is that if I run an installer and it fails because the app is running, it trashes the downloaded installer and then I have to download it again so maybe there should be someway to try again?
03:34:28 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, I'm updating the installer to do an OK Cancel on that message... OK meaning you've closed it and it'll try again. But it'll take another release of each app to catch up. SHould have it out tomorrow
03:34:50 <OliverK> cool
03:34:53 <ZachThibeau> then I should wait then to send you the PChat Portable update then
03:35:00 <OliverK> +1

03:38:32 <OliverK> yup
03:38:54 <OliverK> its going to scan threw and figure out which apps needs to be updated, download them, and then run those installers silently
03:39:05 <OliverK> its works pretty well
03:39:14 <pa_9937> its about half way through
03:39:41 <pa_9937> yes.. it is just AWSOME.. kudos to the entire PA team
03:39:49 <pa_9937> WHAT AN APP..
03:40:10 <OliverK> send your thanks to JohnTHaller, its his work :)
03:40:35 <JohnTHaller> Glad you like it pa_9937 :)
03:41:28 <pa_9937> JohnTHaller: yes.. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT
03:43:04 <JohnTHaller> Cool. Just getting started. The next beta adds more cool stuff. And we're celebrating the 31 days of app-ness with a new app every day this month, too :)
03:43:27 <pa_9937> wow
03:44:38 <ZachThibeau> so JohnTHaller shall I want to send the PChat update now or wait till the next version of the installer?
03:44:56 <JohnTHaller> Send it now and I can repack it for you for release tomorrow
03:45:07 <ZachThibeau> alright
03:45:32 <pa_9937> is 'glary utilities' still part of PA?
03:45:56 <OliverK> things you download from the forums won't be updated sadly
03:46:07 <ZachThibeau> python and tcl can be included addon installers for PChat and I'll include the spell check library too
03:46:23 <OliverK> but that would be somewhat of a mess to implement
03:46:25 <JohnTHaller> pa_9937: glary isn't official yet but should be soon
03:47:29 <pa_9937> ok.. i had that in my PA suite.. i guess that will not be updated then
03:48:07 <OliverK> nope, all you need to though is get the update from the forums. Using the updater won't prevent you from doing updates yourself :)
03:48:29 <pa_9937> oh..
03:49:06 <pa_9937> ok.. i've not done that before.. so how do i go about doing that?
03:49:38 <OliverK> you're looking for glary utilities?
03:49:58 <pa_9937> yes..
03:50:12 <pa_9937> i don't see that in the 'Forum'
03:50:26 <OliverK> so, just go to http://portableapps.com/search and search for "glary utilities"
03:50:42 <OliverK> then, you'll find this link http://portableapps.com/node/20481
03:51:00 <OliverK> download and install, just like you did the updater :)
03:52:54 <pa_9937> i c... ok.. since GU is still a dev test.. should i just wait.. or DL and replace?
03:53:11 <OliverK> I would certainly suggest updating it
03:53:41 <pa_9937> OliverK: ok.. thanks.. let me do that.. brb
03:55:58 <pa_9937> OliverK: should i first uninstall the previous version or will it automatically replace it with the newer version?
03:56:39 <OliverK> you shouldn't need to uninstall first, it should do its own updates
03:56:59 <pa_9937> ok.. let me try
03:57:50 <pa_9937> so . i should go to "manage apps" and "install new app"?
03:58:03 <OliverK> you can, or you can just run the installer
03:58:15 <pa_9937> k
03:59:56 <ZachThibeau> ok JohnTHaller almost done package it up, spell check works, and also I've included the scripting plugins lua (which includes the runtimes locally), also python and tcl should work, already included but the runtimes would need to be installed via addon, strawberry perl works properly now :P, and python from python 27 from python.org works and tcl is active state version
04:00:46 <ZachThibeau> uses myspell which pidgen uses too
04:01:31 <JohnTHaller> Today's new app is out: http://portableapps.com/news/2010-12-12_-_freeciv_portable_2.2.4
04:02:26 <ZachThibeau> cool
04:05:40 <pa_9937> OliverK: i ran the installer and it's all done.. but i forgot to make a note of what my previous version was.. it is now showing '2.30.0.1066'.. is this the latest version?
04:06:09 <OliverK> yeap
04:06:48 <pa_9937> ok.. cool.. thanks..
04:09:57 <ZachThibeau> ok JohnTHaller email or private message for the PChat Portable update?
04:10:10 <JohnTHaller> email the link and i'll get it tomorrow. heading to bed for now
04:10:15 <ZachThibeau> alrighty
04:12:50 <pa_9937> OliverK: let me ask one more thing.. what does all this update do to my flash drive..?
04:13:05 <pa_9937> do flash drive ever need to be defraged?
04:13:10 <OliverK> no!
04:13:18 <pa_9937> k
04:13:28 <OliverK> they employ wear leveling to reduce the writes on the drive so it lasts longer
04:13:39 <OliverK> so defragging does nothing good
04:13:52 <pa_9937> i c..
04:14:10 <ZachThibeau> email sent John, have a good night as I'm going to bed too
04:14:16 <OliverK> just make sure you bckup the drive every so often
04:14:31 <JohnTHaller> expect the release tomorrow
04:14:33 <JohnTHaller> gnight all
04:14:51 *** ZachThibeau is now known as Zach[AFK]
04:15:04 <pa_9937> JohnTHaller: thanks a bunch.. your work is just AWSOME
04:16:05 <pa_9937> OliverK: so i guess formatting it doesn't help either..
04:16:18 <OliverK> well, it will remove your data in a sense
04:16:25 <OliverK> it depends on what you want to do
04:16:37 <JohnTHaller> pa_9937: glad you like it. please enjoy and spread the word
04:17:10 <pa_9937> JohnTHaller: sure will.. thanks again.. i just love PA
04:17:19 <pa_9937> g'night
04:17:23 <JohnTHaller> ... and... Zzzzzz :)
04:17:24 <OliverK> if you just want to wipe it, then it will work
04:17:54 <OliverK> but if you want to trash your data, you'd best do for physical deletion
04:18:04 <OliverK> i.e. a hammer, blender, torch
04:18:09 *** JohnTHaller has parted #portableapps (None)
04:18:27 <OliverK> but to just delete everything on the drive, a format is fine
04:18:40 <OliverK> its actually like that with a standard disk drive
04:18:52 <OliverK> the files aren't always actually deleted, just "lost"
04:19:10 <OliverK> so to securely wipe a drive you need something like DBAN or a physical method
04:19:13 <pa_9937> OliverK: don't know why but i'm always defaulting to the defragging concept
04:19:21 <OliverK> how so?
04:20:05 *** Zach[AFK] is now known as ZachThibeau
04:20:12 <pa_9937> well all this install, uninstall, update, write, delete.. i just think it creates all those holes that need to be compacted
04:20:24 *** ZachThibeau is now known as ZachT|ZzZz
04:20:50 <OliverK> on a magnetic disk drive, like you probably have on yur computer, yes, it would
04:21:16 <pa_9937> when i use "mydefrag" i see how things are all over the place and once the app runs its all nice and compact
04:21:17 <OliverK> but each sector of a flash drive can only be written to so many time, that the drives emply wear leveling to make them last longer
04:21:27 <OliverK> indeed
04:21:35 <OliverK> and then wear leveling will spread it out again
04:21:45 <OliverK> in short, it doesn't really help with flash drives
04:21:51 <pa_9937> i c
04:22:08 <pa_9937> makes sense..
04:22:28 <OliverK> on the magnetic drive, you have less of wear limit on the sectors
04:22:49 <OliverK> actually, of of the motors probably burns out first
04:23:00 <pa_9937> windows kinda burnt that concept into my brain.. lol.. that's why i can never understand why linux never needs defragging
04:23:20 <OliverK> because its how the fileformat was written. Or so I am told
04:23:23 *** ZachT|ZzZz is now known as Zach[AFK]
04:28:06 <pa_9937> true..
04:31:36 <pa_9937> OliverK: my PA shows 'Version 2.0, Beta 5 Pre2'.. so is this the latest?
04:31:42 <OliverK> yep
04:32:15 <pa_9937> so basically i am up-to-date?
04:32:25 <OliverK> AFAIK
04:32:30 <pa_9937> i mean my PA.
04:32:34 <pa_9937> k.. thanks
04:33:51 <pa_9937> well.. OliverK you have been very helpful and thanks a ton for bringing me up to speed... i really appreciate it.. :)

16:17:34 <SteveLamerton> Hey ZachThibeau
16:17:43 <ZachThibeau> whats new?
16:18:28 <SteveLamerton> Not much, just merging a bunch of code into the Toucan trunk, you?
16:19:09 <ZachThibeau> waiting for John to launch PChat Portable update
16:20:40 <SteveLamerton> 1.4?
16:23:23 <ZachThibeau> yup
16:24:16 <ZachThibeau> includes several bug fixes in which XChat itself hasn't fixed yet
16:24:33 <SteveLamerton> Good work, what did you do to the build system?
16:25:32 <ZachThibeau> build system still uses codeblocks but a member of my team fixed it so that it's easier to perform the release builds :P
16:26:04 <SteveLamerton> Ahhh ok :)
16:26:15 <ZachThibeau> yup
16:26:25 <ZachThibeau> gained 2 new team members too
16:27:51 <SteveLamerton> What are they working on?
16:27:55 <ZachThibeau> 1 for working on the linux port, and also another for generic patch support, ie fixing some stuff we missed, providing small fixes here and there
16:28:06 <SteveLamerton> Sounds very useful

21:59:33 <Simeon> and its a bad idea imho to have it delete custom-added maps downloaded from the Marble page.

22:25:54 <Simeon> its the latest beta
22:26:26 <Simeon> but it never crashed while I tried it.
22:26:43 <JohnTHaller> and no sound. kinda simplistic
22:27:12 <Simeon> and I think there wont be any updates anytime soon :)
22:27:28 <ChrisMorgan> It talks about sound in the themes page.
22:27:53 <ChrisMorgan> That is, sound, not music.
22:28:45 <JohnTHaller> sounds are included but non-functional on my PC
22:29:17 <ChrisMorgan> Ah.
22:29:21 <JohnTHaller> Oh they are... there's only one sound. A thud when a penguin breaks one of your walls
22:29:33 <ChrisMorgan> SoundOuch and SoundCrash
22:30:02 <ChrisMorgan> I wouldn't know - I've played it before, but I never have sound turned on for such things.
22:30:28 <JohnTHaller> A game without sound is a bit... outdated
22:30:52 <Simeon> thats the only problem - last release was 5 years ago or something
22:31:42 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, 2 sounds. crash when a penguin hits a wall in progress. ouch when you try and start a wall on a penguin. no sound of the wall being built or completed. no sound to start or end a level.
22:32:19 <ChrisMorgan> Ignoring the sound bit, the game is really complete; there's little more that could be done to it without killing its simplicity.
22:32:27 <ChrisMorgan> So a release from years ago isn't an issue.
22:32:30 <ChrisMorgan> But perhaps sound is?
22:33:44 <JohnTHaller> 11k 8bit sound in 2 WAVs.
22:35:05 <ChrisMorgan> Yep.
22:35:24 <JohnTHaller> Wonder if it'll work with better sounds
22:35:46 <Simeon> I have the portable package and it has more sound files.
22:36:39 <Simeon> looks they are for differnet themes
22:37:11 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, it's the 1.9.5 beta from the site. I'm looking at the same
22:37:24 <JohnTHaller> Sound player is really rough.
22:37:26 <ChrisMorgan> Simeon: there are only two "slots" for sounds.
22:37:45 <Simeon> I just realised that Chris
22:37:57 <Simeon> and a long todo list :)
22:38:21 <JohnTHaller> Ah, I swapped in the SDL DLLs from LBreakout (which we used to fix its sound) and the sound works much better in IceBreaker
22:38:32 <Simeon> nice
22:38:42 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: 1.9.6 switched from 11k to 22k
22:39:09 <ChrisMorgan> And if you look carefully - http://mattdm.org/icebreaker//development.shtml - you find there /are/ actually 1.9.6 binaries for Windows.
22:39:33 <ChrisMorgan> Still from May 31, 2002.
22:39:48 <Simeon> What does 196 have that 197 doesnt?
22:40:03 <JohnTHaller> Yeah 196 sounds are better. Just tried em
22:40:44 <ChrisMorgan> Simeon: that 197 doesn't or that 195 doesn't?
22:40:56 <ChrisMorgan> That page lists the changes
22:41:20 <Simeon> I wondered why you recommended the 1.9.6 download - it was the better sound right?
22:42:55 <JohnTHaller> Yes
22:43:06 <JohnTHaller> 196 has 22k sounds instead of 11k
22:43:16 <JohnTHaller> and a better SDL build it seems
22:43:54 <ChrisMorgan> "Sounds are now 22050Hz. Full keyboard support. Lots of cleanup."
22:46:13 <JohnTHaller> Ok, I'm cool with the 196 version with the fixed sound for release.
22:50:58 <Simeon> 128 icon is the next problem I guess...

23:14:04 <ChrisMorgan> I find it fascinating that one little gem that I did last year, DropUpLoad, http://portableapps.com/node/21191, is my least-downloaded app, four times last month and none this month. When on Windows, I actually found it very helpful for easily uploading portable apps and thought that others would too. (Since going to Linux and a new web host which provided shell access, I've used scp.)
23:14:55 <JohnTHaller> Couple Crystal icons combined and recolored: http://portableapps.com/temp/IceBreakerNew.png
23:15:49 <sar3th> ChrisMorgan: i use FileZilla for ftp, for everything else, there is WinSCP
23:17:04 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: I used FileZilla for FTP as well, but once I found DropUpLoad I switched to it for uploading to the one directory - just drag it from Explorer into the window, much simpler than FileZilla.
23:17:12 <JohnTHaller> Does it do SFTP?
23:17:25 <JohnTHaller> Any thoughts on the new IceBreaker icon?
23:18:54 <ChrisMorgan> It's... different.
