04:10:38 <JohnTHaller> Hello all
04:12:57 <OliverK> evening
04:13:54 <ZachThibeau> howdy John
04:15:52 <JohnTHaller> How goes it
04:18:24 <ZachThibeau> well found out that gtk's 64bit build of their library fails epically
04:18:41 <ZachThibeau> missing references etc
04:19:06 <ZachThibeau> but I managed to build PChat 1.4 64bit by linking to the 64bit gtk dll files
04:20:23 <JohnTHaller> Is there really a need for a 64-bit IRC client?
04:21:05 <ZachThibeau> I had users request for a package that they can install
04:22:26 <JohnTHaller> Some people just request 64-bit stuff for their 64-bit OS even though there's really no benefit.
04:22:41 <ZachThibeau> and frankly I was curious of the state of gcc 64bit on windows
04:23:22 <JohnTHaller> I would have guessed not good, honestly, since there's not much call for it and the major Windows GTK apps aren't really worried about 64bit
04:24:18 <ZachThibeau> seems to be working atm, and I don't plan on continuing the gtk frontend, this is frankly the last build, all focus is now being on the wxwidgets build
04:27:19 *** amdzero has parted #portableapps ("Leaving")
04:27:26 <ZachThibeau> atm none of the plugins are buildable 64bit, but I'm not worried to be honest
04:27:41 <ZachThibeau> anyways I'm ready for bed

10:06:11 <pa_7709> Morning :)
10:06:31 <pa_7709> Do you accept feature requests anywhere?
10:09:29 <ChrisMorgan> pa_7709: sure. If you like, start by saying it here.
10:09:46 <pa_7709> Hi Chris :)
10:12:03 <pa_7709> What would be great would be the option, as part of the automatic update, to download new apps automatically. Ideally an preference screen where you can select catagories (eg 'internet') and have the auto update routine also download any new apps in those categories
10:14:20 <pa_7709> except for games I keep all the categories fully stocked! :)
10:14:39 <pa_7709> Would save alot of time if it downloaded new ones for me :)
10:15:50 <Kiriko> if it dose get added it should be optional, like a siwtch that can be turn on and off
10:17:16 <pa_7709> well you have the option inthe check boxes, if you dont mark any categories then it won't auto add
10:18:17 <pa_7709> so you have a preference page called 'Add new apps Automatically' and it has checkboxes for utilitis, internet, education etc completly optional if you pick any
10:22:21 <ChrisMorgan> pa_7709: it'll be able to add new apps, but just getting all apps in a category isn't the sort of action that I personally would recommend in general; how much have you actually used every single app? Especially while we're releasing a new app every day!
10:23:57 <pa_7709> Optionally when you file up the updater it displays a page of new apps, tick the boxes for any you want to download and install?
10:24:05 <pa_7709> file*=fire
10:24:29 <ChrisMorgan> It will have approximately that.
10:24:45 <pa_7709> as in already in the pipeline?
10:25:22 <ChrisMorgan> Or do you mean "newly released apps since last time"? If so, that won't be going in at the moment.
10:26:18 <pa_7709> The problem at the moment is that without going back through the history or going through the lists you can completly miss that a new app has been added
10:27:20 <pa_7709> it would be great if somehow you could see a simple list of what you don't have installed and have the updater add any you want for you
10:29:00 <ChrisMorgan> It may be like that, I haven't looked at the updater recently and only briefly looked at it at the time (I'm not working on it at all at the present)
10:29:44 <pa_7709> ie 'check available apps'->'The following apps are available:'->check,check,check->checked apps get automatically downloaded and installed
10:31:45 <pa_7709> hehe I love portable apps, the fact I can even have this discussion with a dev is great :)
10:32:51 <pa_7709> I can't wait for the next platform release :)
10:33:55 <ChrisMorgan> One of the things on my list of things-that-I'd-love-to-do-but-will-probably-never-have-time-to-do is reimplementing the updater completely in a different language which would make these sorts of things a lot easier to do; the current updater is done in NSIS, which is a language designed for installers - the code of the updater is pretty messy, and the GUI capabilities fairly limited.
10:34:30 <pa_7709> what would be the language of choice?
10:35:48 <Kiriko> Ok I just did a quick count of how many apps we have and the total is 165. Out of the 165 apps, 59 of them where released in December and counting. 8-)
10:36:24 <pa_7709> So are there new functions in the release version 2.0 from the beta 5? or is it identical with bug fixes?
10:41:41 <pa_7709> or is there a beta 6 due with new features?

19:35:20 <Kiriko> yea or modify it!
19:35:39 <Kiriko> I want to change the look of it
19:36:24 <JohnTHaller> Not that I know of. Very few apps permit that (I'd guess way less than 1%) so unless an app specifically says it does, it doesn't.
19:36:25 <Kiriko> It dose support theme cause it gives you the option but there is non to select or modify :(
19:37:23 <JohnTHaller> Oh wait, I see what you mean. Odd that there is just Default

19:38:25 <JohnTHaller> Ah, support was ditched for it.
19:39:11 <JohnTHaller> It used to have a Themes folder but they ditched the old display method since the ActiveX HTML control was so bad. So it is not possible to theme it any longer.

19:40:31 <JohnTHaller> WOuldn't be that hard to allow changes to colors and stuff. Maybe somebody could pick the app back up.

19:47:14 <pa_4738> hi is there a way of having all portable programs in one download???
19:49:14 <Kiriko> Not that I know of, but that would also bring your computer to a crawl
19:50:57 <Kiriko> but we do have a Suite with the most needed or useful apps http://portableapps.com/download
19:50:58 <pa_4738> you mean to use a crawler?
19:51:23 <pa_4738> i know, but there are no full suites
19:51:24 <Kiriko> no what I mean is that it would slow down your computer way to much
19:51:29 <ZachThibeau> Hey JohnTHaller 169220 needs to be removed
19:51:39 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Kiriko is correct: there are thousands of portable applications.
19:52:01 <pa_4738> i mean just those of portapleapps.com
19:52:34 <Kiriko> yes PortableApps.com has thousands
19:52:38 <pa_4738> i want to download them all then i can organize them
19:53:33 <pa_4738> or at least download all apps of a field, say games
19:54:44 <pa_4738> so no packages will all programs?
19:54:53 <Kiriko> no
19:55:38 <pa_4738> i think a lot of people would be interested
19:55:54 <pa_4738> however thanks for the answer
19:56:05 <Kiriko> you arre welcome :)
19:57:43 <pa_4738> I must say can't see hundreds of apps in this list http://portableapps.com/apps
19:58:24 <Kiriko> that is because the rest of them are in Development
19:58:57 <Kiriko> but so far we have 165 portable applications released and counting
19:59:21 <pa_4738> I meant just those in the list, it would be awesome to have those in a download
20:00:15 <Kiriko> all you have to do is search in our forum you will probably find one you have used or want to use
20:00:58 <Kiriko> yes but the download is for that would be at about 2gb
20:01:26 <pa_4738> its ok
20:01:44 <pa_4738> its time consuming get all these apps
20:02:30 <pa_4738> or alternatively it would be good if there was a download for each category
20:02:54 <pa_4738> i mean the apps released at this site
20:03:59 <pa_4738> disk space is not a big problem, time is for almost everyone

21:43:11 <JohnTHaller> You can upgrade to the current beta by just installing it over 1.6.1. It's actually a stable release but some of the translations aren't done.

21:43:28 <Acro_> Would every app be in english?
21:43:42 <JohnTHaller> Nope. This is just the platform, no apps, that it will upgrade.
21:44:08 <Acro_> sorry, I was thinking wrong :P
21:44:11 <JohnTHaller> So if you have 1.6.1 installed to the root directory (so StartPortableApps.exe is in the root), just install 2.0 Beta 5 to the root as well and it'll upgrade.
21:44:20 <Acro_> ok
21:44:23 <JohnTHaller> Then you get the updater and themes, too
21:44:26 <Acro_> I keep my apps?
21:44:31 <Acro_> they dont vanish?
21:44:32 <JohnTHaller> Yup. No apps change.
21:44:41 <Acro_> alright, I'll do that right now
21:47:25 <Acro_> Many thanks =) sorry for bothering
21:47:32 <Acro_> It works now
21:47:38 <JohnTHaller> Not a problem, Acro_. Hope you enjoy the new version :)
21:47:58 <Acro_> I certainly will :) Portable apps have helped me a million of times
21:48:14 <Kiriko> JohnTHaller: Bruce Pascoe never responded back about InnoSetuportable. It has been 1 week and 6 days. what do you want me to do?
21:48:19 <JohnTHaller> Well, we'll keep going and help you a million more :)
21:48:26 <JohnTHaller> Kiriko: Go fot it.
21:48:35 <Acro_> You can not imagine how useful portable Java with a java-compatible browser is in a school with outdated PC's :)
21:48:35 <Kiriko> ok thank you! :)
