02:55:01 <dominican4life> Ok well i downloaded safari 5.0.5 portable and wanted to know why the top sites button was missing?
02:55:54 <JohnTHaller> There are no legal packages of Safari made portable. The only packages are made by some folks that steal code from other places (like us) and put out software that's only kinda portable. It's often buggy.
02:56:22 *** agdurrette is now known as agdurrette|away
02:57:17 <dominican4life> oh so that means u guys dont plan on making a final version of safari then?
02:57:34 <JohnTHaller> We've never made any version of it because it's illegal to.
02:57:46 <dominican4life> oh i see
02:58:19 <dominican4life> well that sucks T_T
02:59:06 <JohnTHaller> If it's for testing, Chrome and Iron use the same WebKit engine.
02:59:10 <JohnTHaller> Testing web pages, I mean.
02:59:44 <dominican4life> is chrome 11 better then chrome 10?
03:00:36 <JohnTHaller> Each version adds some new cool features and speed improvements. It's measurably faster than Safari on Windows.
03:01:43 <dominican4life> ok if i get chrome 11 beta can i update it
03:01:53 <dominican4life> and still keep my bookmarks saved
03:02:15 <dominican4life> when the stable version is out?
03:02:51 <dominican4life> on the portable one u guys have i mean not the pc normal one
03:02:54 <JohnTHaller> You can move a profile from one Chrome to the other. I'd recommend sticking with 10 for everyday use, though. I don't know that 11 adds too much extra.
03:03:10 <JohnTHaller> But we have a lot of folks that use the Beta exclusively

03:04:20 <dominican4life> ok and last question
03:04:29 <dominican4life> does that go for firefox and opera also?
03:05:10 <JohnTHaller> Yup. You can install one to the other if you'd like. We recommend sticking with a single 'channel', though if you use our automated updater.

03:40:11 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: have you ever been able to reproduce the AppCompactor issue that I have consistently experienced of it failing in ${GetSize} for mounted network drives, or have you only ever experienced that with UNC paths?
03:40:45 <JohnTHaller> Nope. I think it even worked on a UNC path for me when I tried it before.
03:40:51 <JohnTHaller> But I'm not sure
03:41:06 <JohnTHaller> It was running from a UNC path anyway.
03:41:57 <ChrisMorgan> I'm running AppCompactor from a network drive, compacting an app on a network drive.
03:42:22 <ChrisMorgan> But running AppCompactor from the network drive compacting a local copy of the app works fine.
03:43:30 <JohnTHaller> Windows 7, vista, xp?
03:43:40 <ChrisMorgan> XP
03:44:34 <ChrisMorgan> I've never actually had a chance to run AppCompactor on later than XP. Which reminds me - I should fetch those Vista/7 ISOs and install them...

04:05:24 <Richard> Hello
04:05:27 <JohnTHaller> I'm inclined to go with the first one. Got a good look and then users can just hop in and select a color. Plus, white is more consistent with Windows' start menu so users will be more comfortable with itr.
04:05:34 <JohnTHaller> hi Richard how can we help you
04:05:40 *** Richard is now known as Guest85183
04:05:47 <Guest85183> Is there a way to secure this flashdrive so that if I lose it people cannot access my work files?
04:06:19 <Guest85183> ok, no problem. thanks for letting me know it changed
04:06:39 <JohnTHaller> Several ways. The best option is to buy a drive with hardware encryption built in. It's a few extra dollars, but the only way to ensure it's all encrypt and will work on every computer.
04:07:15 <Guest85183> since I already have a drive is there a way to install it?
04:07:20 <Guest85183> or get it somewhere?
04:07:27 <JohnTHaller> You can also use something like TrueCrypt to encrypt the drive with software. The whole thing will be encrypted and just as secure as a hardware encrypted drive. But you need admin rights on every computer to make it readable.
04:08:16 <JohnTHaller> Other than that, you can encrypt individual files and things like passwords on an app-by-app basis. That can help you keep specific things secure.
04:08:30 <kAlug> what's the size of the drive?
04:08:35 <Guest85183> 16GB
04:09:24 <Guest85183> DT101 G2 16GB Kingston Flash Drive
04:09:32 <kAlug> ok. my suggestion will not work then
04:10:12 <Guest85183> ok
04:10:33 <Guest85183> neither will work? or just the single encryption?
04:10:58 <JohnTHaller> There's no way to simply secure the *whole* drive without admin rights, unfortunately.
04:11:29 <Guest85183> that is unfortunate... the reason I got it was so that I could take my work with me without having to lug my laptop around
04:11:47 <Guest85183> guess I should have investigated flash drives and got a secure one, huh
04:12:04 <JohnTHaller> Where will you be using it?
04:12:31 <Guest85183> anywhere I go when I get a emergency call and need to fix something. so it could be a public computer, or at a friends or family members house
04:12:50 <JohnTHaller> Right, that makes sense. Well, what on it would you like to keep secure?
04:12:58 <Guest85183> so never a guarantee that the computer I use will have admin rights
04:13:08 <Guest85183> just the programming files
04:13:14 <JohnTHaller> You can set a master password in Firefox, for instance, and it will properly encrypt your passwords.
04:13:25 <JohnTHaller> KeePass will keep all your others secure.
04:13:47 <Guest85183> KeePass what is that?
04:14:07 <JohnTHaller> We'll be introducing some security features into the Platform in the next couple months as well. Not quite full hardware encryption, but should keep 95% of the people out of the drive.
04:14:26 <JohnTHaller> http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/keepass_portable
04:14:34 <kAlug> KeePass is a password manager
04:14:38 <Guest85183> that is probably good enough. I know nothing can keep a good hacker out
04:14:53 <JohnTHaller> KeePass is storage for passwords, notes, bank, stuff, etc. All secured with military grade encryption.
04:15:32 <Guest85183> I see
04:15:33 <gluxon> Toucan allows you to encrypt files on the usb, instead of the entire partition.
04:15:46 <Alley^Away> the better password can at least delay even the best of hackers
04:15:54 <JohnTHaller> Right, always forget about Toucan: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/toucan
04:16:03 <Guest85183> I have really strong passwords, very strong

04:16:44 <JohnTHaller> So Toucan can encrypt and decrypt, say, a folder or several folders on your drive when you want to.
04:17:34 <Guest85183> so once encrypted, would I still be able to access it with my Portable Editor? (I use UltraEdit Portable)
04:17:47 <JohnTHaller> You'd have to decrypt it first
04:18:02 <Guest85183> ok
04:18:38 <Guest85183> Thank you much!

04:20:40 <gluxon> pa_9268: I'm not sure any of us here (that are active) know.
04:20:41 <JohnTHaller> It mounts and unmounts the drive for you. I think it may allow you to have apps on both the unencrypted part and encrypted part. What most people want is to encrypt the whole drive, which Geek.Menu doesn't assist with.
04:22:21 <pa_9268> encrypt the whole drive = PA.c menu don't have to support trucrypt ?
04:22:45 <JohnTHaller> No. You encrypt the whole drive and then just instell PA.c Platform to the encrypted partition.

04:28:53 <pa_9268> JohnTHaller : can you make a translation tester for translator to check their tranlation (an installer that pop-up every string)
04:29:18 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, I was going to for 2.0 but I didn't have time.
04:30:39 <pa_9268> so translator can check their translation when 2.0 RC 1 release and correct them before 2.0 ?
04:31:55 <JohnTHaller> Correct, yes.
04:34:57 <pa_9268> JohnTHaller: you said use UTF-8 when translating right ? but file that I downloaded from http://portableapps.com/node/27631 Windows XP notepad say it's unicode not unicode big endian and not utf-8

04:37:16 <kAlug> Windows' Unicode = Unicode UTF-16 little endian
04:37:17 <JohnTHaller> I said make sure you use that when you do it. We'll convert it to proper format for the release.
04:37:33 <JohnTHaller> UTF16LE is the only thing the 2,0 Beta 5 release can do in Unicode

14:50:10 <pa_4976> Hi all.
14:50:37 <pa_4976> I jjust have an idea for an app could i give the idea to you here?
14:52:07 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Sure.
14:52:28 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Of course, it's not certain that anyone will implement such application. ;)
14:52:52 <pa_4976> An app like the update apps but the app should list all apps on the homepage and make it possible to download without visiting the page.
14:53:14 <pa_4976> But if i cross my fingers relly hard then? ;)
14:54:57 <benedikt93> don't quote my (I'm just a user as you), but that should be out in the next platform release (candidate) within a few days
14:57:07 <pa_4976> Ohh nice :) I just found out about portableapps a couple of days ago and already in love but this would make it even sweter.

23:41:32 <pa_4157> Hello, I have developed a web based application that is included in Portable apps. I want to distribute this application with portable app? Can you please explan if the license agreement permits?
23:43:40 <gluxon> I think you have to talk to John about that.
23:43:56 <gluxon> If your app is anything other than Open Source that is.
23:44:01 <pa_4157> How can I reach John?
23:44:22 <pa_4157> My app is not open source
23:45:50 <gluxon> His email.
23:46:10 <gluxon> http://johnhaller.com/jh/contact/
23:46:37 <gluxon> Do you want to distribute it on the PortableApps.com web site, or just package it with our installer and format?
23:47:06 <pa_4157> Just package it with your installer
23:49:02 <pa_4157> I have a static web application developed using google gear and javascript... I will add this application in your installer and distribute..
23:49:26 <pa_4157> Can you please let me know if this is possible with your installer?
23:49:46 <gluxon> pa_4157: I believe that's okay if you're app is freeware or OSS.
23:50:17 <pa_4157> It is not freeware
23:50:40 <pa_4157> What can I do now since my app is not a freeware.. Can you please suggest?
23:51:16 <pa_4157> I have almost completed my work without realising the license term
23:52:57 <pa_4157> Can you please advise @gluxon
23:54:04 <gluxon> If it's not free, I believe you have to contact John about it.
23:54:42 <gluxon> http://johnhaller.com/jh/contact/
23:54:43 <pa_4157> oh ok.. Thank you for your information... I will email John
23:55:02 <gluxon> pa_4157: Sorry, that was the wrong link.
