01:34:24 <george_> .tell JohnTHaller Regarding this issue: http://portableapps.com/blogs/johnhaller/2011-04-27_status_update#comment-176441. I have run into this a couple times myself, and as far as I can tell, if any of the apps has a EULA, it does the non-silent install, and then any apps updating after that (during one updater run) also have non-silent installs. I'm not sure if that was the problem here, but i just thought i'd mention it. Hope
01:34:24 <GizmoBot> george_: I'll pass that on when JohnTHaller is around.

11:30:09 <shomon> hi, is anyone around for a licensing question?
11:30:16 *** shomon_ has parted #portableapps (None)
11:30:20 <ChrisMorgan> shomon: sure
11:30:54 <shomon> cheers, well basically it's a conversation that's been going on on the forums, and I was asked to contact John Haller
11:30:56 <shomon> http://portableapps.com/node/27551
11:31:14 <shomon> I'm not sure who John haller is though...
11:31:28 <shomon> or better, how best to contact him
11:32:50 <shomon> basically if I change profile settings (like bundling flash) does it affect the license for the whole thing?
11:35:25 <TPFC-SYSTEM> I think you can't redistribute Firefox at all.
11:35:47 <TPFC-SYSTEM> The reason is that the Firefox name and logo are still there (for example in the about box).
11:36:05 <shomon> ah so portable firefox is only for personal use?
11:36:20 <DannyMuniz> Not with Explicite Permision form the authors
11:37:42 <TPFC-SYSTEM> DannyMuniz: The word "you" referred to shomon, not PortableApps.com. :)
11:38:28 <TPFC-SYSTEM> shomon: IIRC, Mozilla allows commercial use as well. Only redistributing is disallowed.
11:38:32 <shomon> sorry licensing is always complicated! okay well I can use an IE derived browser which I wasn't looking forward to
11:39:12 <shomon> so when a magazine includes a copy of firefox in it's disc, it's obtained permission from ff to do so
11:40:06 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Unmodified Firefox can be redistributed without permission.
11:40:54 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Also, there is a browser called Iceweasel.
11:41:14 <shomon> the people at licensing@mozilla told me "Some files in the profile folder are cached bits of Firefox, and so probably technically are under the same licence as Firefox. But you can redistribute those too, under the terms of our licences" (from the thread I linked above)
11:41:16 <TPFC-SYSTEM> It's simply rebranded Firefox (without Mozilla's name and logo).
11:41:17 <TPFC-SYSTEM> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_by_the_Debian_project
11:42:36 <shomon> I remember wondering at the time why debian folks had done it that way.
11:44:25 <TPFC-SYSTEM> http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/policy.html
11:44:35 <TPFC-SYSTEM> "If you're [...] making significant functional changes, you may not redistribute the fruits of your labor under any Mozilla trademark, without Mozilla's prior written consent."
11:45:06 <shomon> I can't tell if this is a significant functional change...
11:45:45 <TPFC-SYSTEM> I think that the answer you've got means that you can freely redistribute the PROFILE.
11:46:01 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Also, you can redistribute unmodified Firefox.
11:46:06 <shomon> yes, I was also reading into the "too" that the rest of it is also redistributable.
11:46:25 <TPFC-SYSTEM> However, I think you're not allowed to redistribute them together. :/
11:46:56 <shomon> is that due to the mpl?
11:47:26 <TPFC-SYSTEM> The result would be modified Firefox.
11:49:10 <DannyMuniz> shomon: could you make your mod as addon or a seperated installer that would deliver your modification?
11:50:22 <shomon> well, it's a bit of a mess. The project is supposed to be handed in today. It's a usb version of a web app. Not your regular way to show a web app...
11:50:48 <shomon> so making an installer means messing with nsis for ages, or with autohotkey
11:51:19 <shomon> so I just want to get enough info to say "NO WE CAN'T DO PDFS" in big enough red letters...
11:53:04 <shomon> in any case, would firefox portable be only for personal use, or does it include commercial?
11:55:30 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Firefox is tri-licensed MPL/GPL/LGPL. All of these three licenses allow commercial use.
11:56:41 <shomon> as DannyMuniz said I could make an installer that downloads and installs the flash plugin bits I need directly into the usb profile...
11:56:59 <shomon> I'll ask partners@mozilla just in case, but that might be the best way...
11:57:43 <ChrisMorgan> shomon: it's purely trademark issues as far as Firefox is concerned. Flash? That's another kettle of fish.
11:59:27 <shomon> ok. I'm looking at adobe.com's licensing pages :D
11:59:36 <TPFC-SYSTEM> ChrisMorgan: Adding Flash is a modification, and the distribution policy of Firefox depends on whether the browser is modified.
12:00:49 <shomon> aah, but it may be possible to create a separate installer so that users of the USB key have to actually install flash themselves.
12:01:50 <DannyMuniz> yea but Adobe is not one that likes its product redistributed by 3d party
12:02:56 <shomon> that's quite wierd. I've seen it in so many magazine cds and dvds, or in install discs for other things. They can't all be paying adobe loads of cash... or maybe yes...
12:03:34 <DannyMuniz> no you can redistribute adobe in its original package
12:03:42 <DannyMuniz> adobe flash that is
12:03:50 <shomon> http://www.adobe.com/products/players/fpsh_distribution1.html <- just reading this one
12:06:22 <DannyMuniz> "Licensee must use the installers as-is without modification."

16:05:20 <george2> You should be able to copy the "[AppName]Portable" folder to another drive, if that's what you mean. Some apps loose settings if you put them in a different folder (X:\folder\PortableApps\AppPortable\ to X:\PortableApps\AppPortable), but moving them to a different drive is fine.
