A couple of extra things that I find helpful for diagnosis: depends.exe can be a bit useful, but doesn't seem to always show some SxS dependencies, running in Wine in a console is *extremely* useful as it'll show you what DLL it's failing on. And you get the console subsystem output which is lost on Windows, which can be helpful when you have any sorts of issues.
