IRC Log from 2011-06-18

00:00:42 <ChrisMorgan> There is one thing which I'm not certain about how it should be done - meta-packages; as in OpenJDK/OracleJDK, both providing JDK. It's unworkable hardcoding all values, I'm wondering whether it would end up being the way to do it to have another package type so that they would create a sibling directory JDKPortable which would just contain a file package.meta containing the string "OpenJDK" or something like that.
00:01:25 *** rcmaehl (~rcmaehl@unaffiliated/rcmaehl) has joined #portableapps
00:02:01 <JohnTHaller> As there are only two JDKs we will support, I think we'd be OK just binary checking for one then the other. It may be moot as Oracle JDK may be off limits.

00:09:36 <ChrisMorgan> Or another example: Python. We'd want Python2 and Python3, but then there are also further things; as well as CPython we could potentially have IronPython (once we have .NET), PyPy and JPython. (There would be an interesting situation, as CPython would be having the Python package name.) But at present there are very few packages which could use Python from source - I think I'm probably just trying to find difficulties where we don
00:11:26 <JohnTHaller> For the few Python apps, wouldn't we want them to have their own copy of Python due to Python hell

00:56:35 <ChrisMorgan> "Python hell"?
00:59:04 <ChrisMorgan> Launchers would need to be able to have their own PYTHONPATHs to get their own imports and libraries they use, but that wouldn't be an issue. With CPython, a very few CPython 2.5 C modules won't work in 2.6, but hitting the backwards-incompatible C API changes will be rare - and there's only one in 2.6 to 2.7 which shouldn't have been being used for about ten years.

01:35:26 <kAlug> It seems to be an easy task
01:36:41 <ChrisMorgan> JohnTHaller: I disagree about NSIS being included in PAL. Currently there is only one version supported (Unicode, 2.46), anyway.

02:52:05 <pa_9052> hi there
02:52:16 <pa_9052> can someone help
02:52:44 <pa_9052> I am getting an integrity check has failed
02:53:20 <JohnTHaller> pa_9052: That means the file didn't fully download. It's a built-in check to make sure the whole thing is there.
02:53:27 <pa_9052> say more info goto http:nsis.sf.net?NSIS_Error
02:53:31 <JohnTHaller> Clear your browser's cache and redownload
02:53:51 <pa_9052> done that several times now
02:53:57 <JohnTHaller> Which file
02:54:17 <pa_9052> the suite one with all the apps
02:54:45 <JohnTHaller> You know which mirror you're downloading from? (Something like Voxel or another name)
02:55:01 <pa_9052> let me check
02:56:27 <pa_9052> http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/PortableApps.com%20Suite/PortableApps.com%20Suite%201.6.1/PortableApps.com_Suite_Setup_1.6.1_English.exe/download
02:57:22 <kAlug> In that page, find "Mirror provided by:"
02:57:23 <JohnTHaller> Right, but once you do that, SourceForge will redirect you to a specific mirror near you geographically.
02:58:01 <pa_9052> that the link it takes me to
02:58:42 <JohnTHaller> On that page, on the right side, it'll say MIRROR PROVIDED BY and then a big logo
02:59:14 <pa_9052> voxel
03:00:07 <pa_9052> alos would it be because i am running windows 7 64 bit
03:00:38 <JohnTHaller> I just downloaded it from Voxel and got the whole thing. And I'm on Win 7 x64.
03:00:52 <JohnTHaller> (I have a 50M connection, so it downloaded quick)
03:01:09 <pa_9052> got a 6meg connection lol
03:01:43 <pa_9052> but did the small version as well and it did the same thing
03:01:49 <JohnTHaller> I'd suggest starting with the 2.0 Beta 6 release here: http://portableapps.com/node/24258
03:02:13 <pa_9052> ok thank i will try thank you
03:02:37 <JohnTHaller> Then download the individual apps. The suite is a bit outdated at this point and will shortly be a build-your-own affair using this thing: http://portableapps.com/temp/platform2/PortableAppDirectoryAdd.png
03:03:24 <JohnTHaller> If you're still having download issues, there could be something else up with your connection or your local antivirus or antimalware scanner. You could try another browser to download the stuff.
03:04:01 <pa_9052> ok will do and think you for your help
03:04:27 <pa_9052> i'll come back if it dont work out

19:55:02 <DannyMuniz> JohnTHaller: have you though of making a Linux distro for PA.c?
19:55:30 <JohnTHaller> How do you mean? You mean like DamnSmallLinux Portable?
19:55:43 <DannyMuniz> yea something like that
19:56:51 <JohnTHaller> The problem is that all those small distros violate the GPL by not redistributing the source for all the apps and utililties they include.
19:57:18 <JohnTHaller> So we'd need to track down the specific version of the code for each app included and compile it all together for download for every version of it we did.
19:58:07 <DannyMuniz> I see...

19:59:58 <DannyMuniz> Ok so if it was to be done we would need a team of people that can make it with that resorces needed
20:00:20 *** mrmcpowned has quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
20:00:41 <JohnTHaller> Yup. We'd need to take DSL X.Y, then look at it and see all the apps that are included. Then track down the source code for all those individual apps and package all of those into a downloadable file. Then we could portablize it.
20:01:03 <JohnTHaller> Messy to say the least
20:02:36 <gluxon> Wait, really? Does the same apply to all Linux distros?
20:03:21 <JohnTHaller> Most of the major distros properly host all source code for all apps within their repositories. Most smaller ones, especially downstreams of larger ones that modify upstream ones, do not and are in violation of the GPL.
20:07:14 *** ZachThibeau (~ZachThibe@unaffiliated/zachthibeau) has joined #portableapps
20:08:12 <DannyMuniz> DamnSmallLinux provids a list of all or most of the applications that it includes http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/applications.html
20:12:53 <JohnTHaller> And packages: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/packages.html
20:13:33 <JohnTHaller> So it wouldn't be *too* hard to do. Just a lot of work for each release. But if someone wants to take up that challenge, I'd love to release it.
20:14:24 <DannyMuniz> yea i saw that, now it will take some one that know there way oround linux to make it posible
20:15:15 <JohnTHaller> Making it portable isn't too bad, nor does it require Linux knowledge. I had a partially working version of it before. It's more the keeping up with it.
20:15:39 <DannyMuniz> also DMSL is a almost 100mb download
20:15:52 <JohnTHaller> Smaller than LibreOffice and many of our games.
20:16:01 <gluxon> Hm.. why does it take Linux knowledge to package it portable?
20:17:55 <DannyMuniz> for the portable part no but for the modifications to make it work with our portableapps maybe
20:18:18 <gluxon> What modifications would it require?
20:18:46 <gluxon> Aren't we running DSL Portable in QEMU if it ever happens?
20:19:58 <JohnTHaller> I think Danny is thinking of a DSL with PA.c running inside it. We're thinking more a DSL Portable you can install into the PA.c Platform to be able to fire up a simple Linux instance.
20:20:51 <DannyMuniz> sorry computer lag, JohnTHaller that is correct
20:21:05 <gluxon> Hm.. DSL with PA.c running in it wouldn't be too hard.
20:21:47 <gluxon> Probably a lot of work though :'(
20:22:38 <DannyMuniz> we would have to add wine and it take quite some space just for wine
20:23:20 <gluxon> DannyMuniz: But the problem is making Linux see the PA.c drive.
20:23:45 <gluxon> And we would also have to recompile DSL to include WINE.
20:25:06 <DannyMuniz> yea that is a problem, but a simple one DSL could be made wile works gose on for inclucding wine in a nother version
