14:14:10 <pa_9975> hello everyone
14:14:41 <pa_9975> if I download a portable app like Firefox on Windows, will it run perfectly on Linux too?
14:16:50 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Yes, if you use Wine. It's officially supported.
14:17:04 <benedikt93> pa_9975, hi. The prblem is not the download, but rather the fact that the apps on PortableApps.com are in general windows only. They may work with Wine though. IIRC there's been another project for portable Linux apps, maybe I can dig up the link
14:17:32 <pa_9975> thanks
14:17:49 <pa_9975> I always found using WINE a little annoying
14:18:57 <benedikt93> Here it is: http://portablelinuxapps.org/ . IT#s
14:19:15 <pa_9975> thanks
14:19:32 <pa_9975> but presumably those won't run on Windows. What would be really cool would be cross platform apps
14:19:35 <benedikt93> *It's not affiliated with this project here though and I never used 'em myself, so I can't guarantee you anything on them
14:21:17 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Unfortunately, creating portable cross-platform applications is almost impossible. :(
14:21:56 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Gpg4usb ( http://gpg4usb.cpunk.de/ ) is the only example I know.
14:22:09 <pa_9975> Yeah, that's what I imagined. What would be ideal for me would be a, let's say, Firefox code that detects the OS and runs the appropriate version, using the same profile folder
14:23:08 <benedikt93> One problem would be that you'd need every executable multiple times, thus increasing package sizes
14:23:41 <pa_9975> I don't really mind, got plenty of space on my USB
14:24:10 <pa_9975> it's obviously not anybody's priority right now, I just think it would be great in the future
14:24:46 <pa_9975> It simply annoys me that Linux is better in almost every way, except there are a few pieces of Windows-only Software that I cant do without
14:26:04 *** Pyromaniac (~JW_Hough@ip68-107-136-221.tc.ph.cox.net) has joined #portableapps
14:27:39 <TPFC-SYSTEM> pa_9975: I agree with that. Windows-only software is basically the ONLY reason why I use Windows at all, yet I use Windows nearly all the time.
14:28:45 <pa_9975> The problem is obviously that there's no corporate benefit in developing software for Linux
14:28:52 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Hopefully ReactOS ( http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html ) will be usable one day...
14:29:25 <pa_9975> Surely Windows won't allow some part of it

14:35:04 <TPFC-SYSTEM> I'm going to just wait (some years) and see. :/
14:37:03 <pa_9975> If it doesn't use NTFS, what does it use? ext4 I hope?
14:37:26 <pa_9975> Because if it uses FAT then it will never stand a chance...
14:38:08 <TPFC-SYSTEM> It does use FAT now. Ext3 and NTFS will hopefully be implemented in the future.
14:39:03 <pa_9975> Right. Personally I've always been a fan of minimalism when it comes to PCs. That's why Windows just doesn't cut it
14:39:20 <pa_9975> When I have the time I might try a very basic Linux install
14:40:06 <pa_9975> Have you been watching Google Chrome OS too?
14:41:06 <TPFC-SYSTEM> No, I haven't.

14:53:35 <Pyromaniac1> the biggest issue I see with teh cloud is lack of mobility and access

14:55:07 <sar3th> exactly
14:55:22 <sar3th> also, there is privacy issues in storing your data at a third party
14:59:23 <benedikt93> which is why companys (at least larger ones) won't use it, I guess
15:02:43 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Companies will use clouds simply because they want to look modern.

16:21:22 <Pyromaniac2> why
16:22:40 <Pyromaniac2> I've tried them both, liked neither, stuck to chrome
16:24:31 <kAlug> ChromePlus: I was thinking on making it portable; Chromium Portable: I develop it (or at least the only version named "Chromium Portable")
16:25:16 <benedikt93> maybe there's a bunch of secret commecial apps <-- that could also explain the heavy delays in case additions to the menu became necesarry (ok, this is pretty speculative, but it could be ;))
16:26:03 <Pyromaniac2> I looked at chromeplus (regshots and all), but I think i saw something that I didn't like about it, so I never tried making it portable
