12:48:03 <kAlug> hey ChrisMorgan
12:48:10 <ChrisMorgan> hey kAlug
12:49:07 <ChrisMorgan> I was going to release 2.2b1, but in running the generator, I wasn't partickerly happy with the "Upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2" message. I've tacked on "if needed", but I still wish we could do without it... but it's slow enough that we shouldn't omit it :-(
12:49:58 <ChrisMorgan> Looking forward to when I get round to replacing the Generator with Python code in PADT. That will be finished in the blink of an eye (if you can blink that fast), rather than 0.5-2 seconds.
12:51:14 <kAlug> I has been thinking on helping you with PADT. What do I need to build it?
12:54:42 <ChrisMorgan> Python 2.6 or 2.7 and PyQt4 or PySide. I think that's all. I should clean up various areas of the code to make it more presentable...
12:55:07 <ChrisMorgan> In places it could have done with a bit more effort into the design. Far too much of it has just happened.

12:58:20 <kAlug> Oh, on http://hg.sf.net/hgweb/portableapps/development-toolkit/rev/3389712089f7 , I suggest using AppID.ini instead of the first file.
12:58:53 *** kAlug has quit (Quit: I have to go now. Thanks for the info.)
12:58:55 <ChrisMorgan> I need to go and do the dishes and go to bed now. Talk more about it later. I plan to release PAL2.2b1 tomorrow morning.
13:01:31 <ChrisMorgan> That appid thing is one that I had my eye on and did have it in my plan to switch back to using appid - except that I'm changing the way the class is set up as a whole; it's a weird mixture of dealing with all launchers and a certain launcher.ini. I'm going to split it apart to deal with those two aspects of its functionality separately. (The all-launchers stuff will probably go in Package.) I'll "fix" its behaviour then.

22:51:23 <kAlug> hey ChrisMorgan
22:51:30 <ChrisMorgan> Gleetings!
22:53:41 <kAlug> I've found a new feature for PAL 2.2: using the Command Prompt as executable to launch.
22:54:26 <ChrisMorgan> ?
22:54:48 <kAlug> I've also abstracted a new "SpecialExecutables" segment, used when ProgramExecutable is "symbolic" (currently, java.exe, javaw.exe and %ComSpec% fit this description).
22:55:49 <kAlug> I realized opening TortoiseHg was too much when I only needed a console with Mercurial configured.
22:56:33 <kAlug> Something like Mercurial Cmd Portable somewhere in the site.
22:56:57 <ChrisMorgan> Such things should probably just extend Command Prompt Portable.
22:57:09 <ChrisMorgan> Add themselves to it, somehow.
22:59:58 <kAlug> Maybe, but this would require messing with its settings. I don't know if this is exactly desirable.
23:00:22 *** techfreak244 (~techfreak@c-68-40-88-129.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) has joined #portableapps
23:02:04 <ChrisMorgan> I think it's vastly better and more useful to extend the terminal environment rather than to have a number of different styles of terminals. I much prefer one in which I can do everything to a handful for different tasks.
23:07:15 <kAlug> Certainly, but then, Command Prompt Portable is not the only of its kind we have.
23:10:00 <kAlug> Anyway, go on with PAL 2.2. I'll keep this for future releases.

23:24:50 *** PlauSocks|AFK is now known as PlauSocks
23:26:04 <kAlug> Sounds like your Subversion unified support (and PuTTY too)...
23:26:31 <ChrisMorgan> Yep, common data is something we'll need to deal with at some point.
23:27:10 <ChrisMorgan> Run out of time for releasing PAL 2.2b1 this morning, got to go to Uni. That's what happens when I spend an hour or so singing to my sister's accompaniment.
23:27:40 <ChrisMorgan> I'll write more about common data and my notions of how it will work some time.
23:28:03 <kAlug> Good idea. We need a blueprint.
23:28:05 <ChrisMorgan> Did you read in the logs my comment about your remark on PADT's launcher handling?
23:28:17 <ChrisMorgan> I think I've got it pretty much worked out in my mind.
23:29:42 <kAlug> Yash.
23:30:08 <kAlug> Hmmm... YaSH -> Yet Another SHell!
23:31:59 * ChrisMorgan just wants a decent terminal like gnome-terminal for Windows
23:32:15 <sar3th> tried powershell? ;)
23:32:44 <kAlug> Last time I tried, PS was a blue version of the command prompt.
23:33:18 <ChrisMorgan> Having win-bash, winzsh, etc. really doesn't help, when you don't get a decent terminal (the biggest definer of "decent" being support for ANSI escape codes, second biggest being using readline or a very similar thing)
23:33:22 * kAlug needs Linux tools
23:33:25 <ChrisMorgan> YAY!
23:34:01 * ChrisMorgan uses zsh now and gets nice extra info in the prompt when dealing with hg repositories
23:34:21 <kAlug> What kind of info?
23:34:47 <kAlug> My Bash config detects hg repos... without hg.
23:35:33 <ChrisMorgan> branch, tags, bookmarks, status (modified/unknown files), whether an update is available, mq information
23:35:35 <kAlug> BTW, ChrisMorgan: do you know any Mercurial free online hosting services, besides Bitbucket?
23:35:57 <ChrisMorgan> Google Code and SourceForge would be the next two most popular
23:36:56 <ChrisMorgan> Note that the hg prompt is quite achievable in bash, too, but in zsh I get to have it on the right rather than the left.
23:37:00 <kAlug> Both are project-oriented. I was looking for something user-oriented. Maybe my SourceForge's user project.
23:37:32 <ChrisMorgan> Oh, and I get similar data for git... but now I use hg-git or new things I check out. Much simpler.
23:38:04 <kAlug> And smaller on Windows. Portable msysGit weights ~160MB.
23:38:42 <ChrisMorgan> I've never dealt with anything git-related on Windows.
23:40:02 <kAlug> Don't try.
23:43:49 <ChrisMorgan> OK, you've convinced me ;-)
23:44:22 <sar3th> my regular git installation is 66,5 mb
23:44:40 <sar3th> don't know why you have 100 mb more
23:45:01 <sar3th> and it comes with a bash
23:45:37 <ChrisMorgan> I just love what I've managed to do with my Python prompt... a couple of days ago I decided to try and improve it, so now I get things like os and sys imported already, a coloured >>>, keep history, tab completion, true division enabled. All of a sudden it's oodles better.
23:45:53 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: bash, but no useful terminal to back it, I suppose?
23:46:22 <kAlug> rxvt
23:46:42 <kAlug> I usually prefer MinTTY.
23:47:02 <sar3th> wow, current portable git is 200 mb when installed
23:47:33 <kAlug> Yep. That one. Mercurial (without TortoiseHg) is ~15MB.
23:48:27 <ChrisMorgan> kAlug: hmm, never come across MinTTY, looks good, though. What does it require to work?
23:48:28 <sar3th> ChrisMorgan: probably not, but i haven't missed a thing coming from linux bash
23:48:43 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: if not, you didn't ever use bash properly.
23:50:38 <kAlug> Cygwin. For Linux, I used to use XFCE's Terminal (LXTerminal was giving me some troubles), but now I use the plain TTY terminal.
23:50:50 <sar3th> well, you already said what you think is decent, so what do you need ansi escape codes for? and why readline?
23:53:23 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: putting colour in the prompt alone makes a terminal significantly easier to work with. And readline is just better in every way. In Command Prompt, I press Esc and it's all gone! When you're used to working in Vim, you do that sometimes...
23:54:18 <sar3th> git bash does nothing when i press esc, and the prompt is coloured
23:55:27 <kAlug> ChrisMorgan: Is PADT's tip in an usable state?
23:55:51 <sar3th> sample pic: http://rickatnight11.com/images/aeon_git_instructions/05_gitbash_history.jpg
23:56:11 <ChrisMorgan> sar3th: it's using rxvt or sim'lar.
23:56:49 <sar3th> i don't know about that, but as i said, i haven't missed a thing coming from linux bash
23:57:19 <sar3th> except for the annoying ding sound that some terminals make when you try to autocomplete things
23:57:46 <kAlug> I'd like something like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/Friendlyinteractiveshell.png
23:58:49 <kAlug> BTW, I've researched D a bit more, and I gave up trying to split a string in lines and removing blank and comment lines.
23:59:10 <kAlug> bad docs
