00:00:24 *** kAlug|Away is now known as kAlug
00:00:27 <kAlug> pa_4436: Maybe. Why?
00:00:48 <pa_4436> I wanted to suggest an option to donate with trialpay
00:01:48 *** pa_4436 is now known as [phly95]
00:03:05 <[phly95]> That would be good for people who want to support this site but dont want to spend money on it.
00:03:28 *** [phly95] is now known as phly95
00:03:30 <masthom> It's nice to see development continue on portable apps though one has to wonder if eventually they will have to adapt to the change in tech.
00:04:27 <masthom> I mean with the continued upswing in tablet and mobile sales and the slower progression of desktop and laptop sales you can see which way the market is starting to trend.
00:05:22 <kAlug> phly95: I'll pass that to our project manager, when he comes back online.
00:05:27 <phly95> But kids will still wanna play their games on public computers though, right, that is what I use portable apps for.
00:05:47 <masthom> Sure.
00:06:30 <masthom> In fact over the next few years hopefully developers for projects like these will find a way to swing with the trend changes.
00:06:54 <phly95> plus, it's easier to pretend to be doing work on a school computer rather than using their cell phones in school
00:07:03 <masthom> Find niches that keep the need for such applications and utilize them.
00:07:49 <kAlug> masthom: Exactly. Tablets are for content use, not generation. We'll still have a niche.
00:08:02 <phly95> I would like a working portable Steam app, that would be good.
00:08:53 <masthom> Desktop and laptop manufacturers along with portable device manufactures face the same problems trying to keep up with the trends.
00:09:32 <masthom> More so with the increase in "air drop" type technology that allows seamless transfer without the need for external devices.
00:10:04 <sar3th> phly95, iirc someone was actually working on that
00:11:51 <phly95> Unfortunatly, the current version of Steam portable doesn't work w/o admin though.
00:12:15 <phly95> So it won't work at school
00:12:18 <sar3th> as steam needs to install some runtimes, i doubt there will be a working version w/o admin rights
00:14:45 <phly95> A virtual PC app would be good for that, make an app that excepts an OS boot disks and I could put Ubuntu with crossover on that. Then Steam will work well anywhere.
00:20:44 <phly95> Do you think my previous post is a good Idea?
00:21:22 <kAlug> Which one?
00:22:13 <phly95> This one: "A virtual PC app would be good for that, make an app that excepts an OS boot disks and I could put Ubuntu with crossover on that. Then Steam will work well anywhere."
00:23:53 <kAlug> Maybe QEMU. I don't remember if it requires admin rights.
00:30:54 <phly95> Actually, I found one called JPC just now but I don't know how to get Linux installed on it
00:33:23 <phly95> http://jpc.sourceforge.net/home_home.html
00:33:28 <phly95> is the link
00:33:32 <kAlug> "Programs inside JPC can run up to 20% of the native processor speed.". Doesn't seems good.
00:33:42 <kAlug> For games.
00:34:10 <phly95> darn, that's exactly what I wanted it for.
00:34:49 <phly95> I wanted to put Steam on it
00:39:44 <phly95> Actually, this one looked good http://portableapps.com/node/21307
00:40:42 <phly95> It has a built in install feature for Ubuntu so I don't have to do anything manually
00:42:09 <phly95> It's pretty easy to use for a program using the command promt to navigate.
00:46:53 <phly95> Do you think that it will be good for games or not?
00:53:36 <kAlug> I don't know. My experience with QEMU is pretty... slow.
00:54:17 *** masthom has parted #portableapps (None)
01:03:50 <phly95> Now that Ubuntu is downloaded, I noticed that it is taking a long time to load.

02:55:53 <JohnTHaller> Hey guys. Just wanted to let you know the platform won't drop today. I spent all day in bed. So it'll likely be tomorrow or Friday. Just a heads up.
02:56:55 <sar3th> feeling sick?
02:57:27 <JohnTHaller> Nasty cold (hopefully not flu). Girlfriend has been down for the count for 5 days so far, called out sick the last 2.
02:57:34 <sar3th> ugh
02:57:37 <sar3th> get well soon
02:57:49 <sar3th> :)
02:57:57 <JohnTHaller> One of those throbbing head dizzy things that makes coding all but impossible. Thanks man.
02:58:15 <JohnTHaller> Apparently all of NYC has it, has had it, or will shortly. Yay subways.
02:59:08 <sar3th> we got that in germany as well, i've been feeling ill for the last 5 days or so...it tends to become worse towards night
02:59:47 <JohnTHaller> Yeah. I was hoping for a light version since I've had it about 5 days now. But yesterday night it started nailing me. Likely because I attended the NY Tech Meetup to see the mayor and other folks.
03:00:08 <sar3th> :|
03:00:14 <sar3th> one step forward, two steps back
03:02:26 *** kAlug|Away is now known as kAlug
03:03:45 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, I know. Really wanted to get the platform out to start fundraising. Rent and hosting and all.
03:05:03 <JohnTHaller> Hi kAlug. You give any thought to the 3 Last vars in PAL vs all manual?
03:07:38 <JohnTHaller> (I'll only be online a few minutes. Feeling pretty off, but at least I'm not vomitting... yet, anyway) :P
03:09:47 <kAlug> I don't really have a strong opinion on that. A note: Kingsoft Office does need LastAppData.
03:10:06 <kAlug> "I honestly can't think of a use for storing anything beyond that [...]"
03:10:16 <ZachThibeau> hola John
03:11:12 <JohnTHaller> Oh yeah. Sorry, I completely forgot that some apps may need a couple local vars like that. I wasn't advocating removing the functionality, just not forcing devs to use it for those basic 3 pairs of locations, which is all our 200+ apps in release need.
03:11:15 <JohnTHaller> hi Zac
03:12:26 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: I hope you didn't see my ranty first version of that post. If you did, I'm sorry. Very rough day.
03:13:30 <ZachThibeau> managed to figure out the crashing issues in 1.4.2 of PChat, seems settings are causing the conflict, did a clean install and it worked until closing, I managed to fix the closing bug but settings I'm still unsure of what's going on there or why it's crashing with pre-existing settings
03:14:11 <kAlug> diff the settings.
03:14:35 <ZachThibeau> to be honest nothing has changed in the settings, I've made sure of that
03:15:06 <ZachThibeau> anyways I've been doing crash tests through a debugger
03:16:03 <kAlug> JohnTHaller: for those variables + ReplaceAll we could have a sort of "default config" mode.
03:16:18 <ZachThibeau> in other hands my branch for PChat for updating the code to gtk3 is coming pretty well
03:16:39 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: Default how? Would you think of using the INI as I'd suggested in the post?
03:16:43 <ZachThibeau> mind you I had to compile gtk3 myself since there are no official gtk3 packages available for windows anymore
03:17:40 <ZachThibeau> just a lot of images in gtk2 where gdk stuff and gtk3 pretty much moved to cairo based graphics which is causing some issues but hopefully not too bad
03:17:44 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: I ask because I've been updating every single app to support partial path portability (one INI section is now two) and knowing in the back of my mind I was gonna have to do it to them all again once we have PortableAppsRoot (now 3 INI sections per replacement per file)
03:18:10 <kAlug> I'm still thinking. But it would also add a [ReplaceCommonValues] section to replace thar vars automatically.
03:18:35 <JohnTHaller> I'd rather not add anything major to the INI for it that the dev needs to think about.
03:18:48 <kAlug> The sections contents would be <file>=<mode (if any, e.g. DoubleBackslash)>
03:20:03 <JohnTHaller> I was thinking we could use it just like everything else and just replace the string. So if type=ReplaceAll, then we know we'll have the special var in there and just run the standard replace 3 times using the 3 different vars.
03:22:01 <kAlug> I'll check with Chris the better option. But anyway, you'll get it.
03:23:06 <kAlug> Off-topic: How should be .NET version support: a specific version, at least that version, ? Should I include a maximum version?
03:24:38 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: Here's what I mean about the INIs getting out of hand. This is the InkscapePortable.ini real world, with LastPARoot and with ReplaceAll: http://pastebin.com/Q8XncJrT
03:25:32 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: From what I've researched, the app should just specify what it needs as generically as possible (Example: just 3.5 if it doesn't require SP1)
03:25:48 <JohnTHaller> And then we should use that NSIS code I linked you to or a reinterpretation of it
03:26:15 <kAlug> Sorry, I have to go now. You know, I'll check the logs later.
03:26:24
03:26:27 <JohnTHaller> No worries. T
03:30:05 <JohnTHaller> kalug: when you check the logs, I added the example to the post: http://portableapps.com/node/29458#comment-184650
