13:50:48 <Gizmokid2005> pa_9294: not if you don't describe your problem
13:52:28 <pa_9294> ok well it says it says when I download the apps that it wont download
13:53:07 <pa_9294> it says its not valid and can not be installed
13:53:07 <Gizmokid2005> what exactly does "it" say? And what is "it"?
13:53:29 <pa_9294> It happens for all the apps
13:54:45 <Gizmokid2005> how are you downloading them?
13:55:29 <pa_9294> I click apps - get more apps
13:55:54 <Gizmokid2005> does it give you any other errors?

17:30:15 <pa_7845> I want to report a serious security hole I discovered this morning
17:30:21 <JohnTHaller> In?
17:30:33 <pa_7845> using FF portable
17:30:34 *** GordCaswell (~GordCaswe@unaffiliated/ve4jhj) has joined #portableapps
17:30:39 <GizmoBot> GordCaswell is a PortableApps.com developer. The apps he is working on can be found here: http://portableapps.com/node/26399
17:31:00 <JohnTHaller> So what was the problem?
17:31:32 <pa_7845> seems that the FirefoxPortable.exe has some kind of table ip-passwords that is saved in the server side
17:31:42 <pa_7845> so, a guy this morning downloaded FF portable
17:32:01 <pa_7845> and when entering to gmail, it appears to him my user name and password
17:32:07 <JohnTHaller> FirefoxPortable.exe doesn't even have any code to communicate with the network.
17:33:07 <pa_7845> so, it might be a gmail bug maybe?
17:33:20 <JohnTHaller> Doubtful. Was it being used on the same machine?
17:33:31 <pa_7845> no, never
17:33:40 <pa_7845> let me say this
17:33:55 <pa_7845> in the morning I have one ip, and then it was changed dynamically
17:34:05 <pa_7845> seems that he received my ip in the morning
17:34:31 <pa_7845> so, there is some kind of table ip-password saved remotely on some server
17:36:05 <JohnTHaller> FirefoxPortable.exe has no networking code included at all. Firefox itself doesn't normall store anything server-side unless you activate Firefox Sync (off by default). I don't use Firefox Sync myself, so I am pretty unfamiliar with it, but I believe it is login-based and not IP-based.
17:36:31 <JohnTHaller> Unless Gmail is storing just the recent username IP-based and not the password to allow for easier logins, but that seems unlikely.
17:36:42 <pa_7845> hmmm so weird
17:37:04 <pa_7845> we confirmed the ip
17:37:18 <pa_7845> and effectively, we shared in some moment the same ip
17:37:40 <pa_7845> he is a guy that I never talked with him before
17:37:41 <JohnTHaller> That could have confused Gmail, I spose. IP + browser version would be the same.
17:38:24 <JohnTHaller> I would be surprised at Google for making that big a mistake, though. So was your account still logged in, or was it just set as the account that last logged in?
17:39:23 <pa_7845> what happened is this... I was invisible in gtalk, but I was logged in in gmail
17:39:47 <pa_7845> then this guy came to me saying me all of this
17:40:58 <pa_7845> I dunno if you can tell me this, but if you can, what is the porpose of FirefoxPortable.exe?
17:41:20 <pa_7845> I can bypass that and still FF works fine
17:42:06 <JohnTHaller> If you run firefox.exe directly, you're running a local copy of Firefox and all bookmarks, settings and extensions are stored on the local PC just as if you had Firefox installed locally and ran it.
17:42:31 <pa_7845> right
17:42:59 <JohnTHaller> FirefoxPortable.exe is the launcher that makes it portable. It sets the proper commandline so Firefox.exe understands where to store data, adjusts the profile so as the drive letter and path changes things keep working, and cleans up after Firefox so things aren't left behind. It's all open source and the source code is included in Other\Source
17:43:37 <pa_7845> ah ok, so FirefoxPortable.exe makes the trick
17:44:06 <pa_7845> ok ok so weird, it must be a Gmail bug I think
17:44:09 <JohnTHaller> Yeah, it does all the work. It's written in NSIS, a scripting language usually used for installers (irony). It's pretty easy to follow if you're at all curious.
17:44:24 <pa_7845> I'm a Java developer
17:44:47 <JohnTHaller> Are you at a university or corporation that is sharing the IPs? A network firewall could somehow be holding onto the Gmail session.
17:45:01 <kAlug> I tried to explain NSIS to a Java developer once. It didn't work.
17:45:10 <pa_7845> hmm could be. I'm working on a multinational corporation
17:45:45 <JohnTHaller> kAlug: heh
17:46:18 <sar3th> roaming profiles
17:47:02 <Gizmokid2005> but those shouldn't be a problem if he in fact used the portable version
17:47:08 <sar3th> pa_7845: do you and said user use the same info to login to your machines? i.e. are you on the same account
17:47:13 <Gizmokid2005> unless the other guy is using the same portable instance.
17:47:16 <sar3th> Gizmokid2005: right, but he said he used ff.exe directly once
17:47:27 <Gizmokid2005> right
17:47:31 <Gizmokid2005> I know where you're going with that.
17:47:52 <sar3th> :)
17:48:03 <pa_7845> he downloaded this morning FF portable
17:48:11 <pa_7845> then opened gmail
17:48:22 <pa_7845> and my user name and password appeared to him
17:48:45 <pa_7845> I never was in his machine before
17:48:52 <pa_7845> I even never talked with him
17:48:53 <JohnTHaller> Your password couldn't have appeared to him. Gmail doesn't display it.
17:49:08 <pa_7845> right, it was encrypted
17:49:17 <pa_7845> you know, like **********
17:49:28 <sar3th> autocomplete?
17:49:36 <pa_7845> but he accessed my account
17:49:41 <pa_7845> yep
17:49:46 <JohnTHaller> Weird
17:49:51 <pa_7845> sooooooo weird
17:49:51 <JohnTHaller> For starters, change your password.
17:49:56 <pa_7845> I did
17:51:06 <pa_7845> and I confirmed with him that we shared the same ip during the morning
17:51:20 <pa_7845> the ip's here seem to be dynamic
17:51:41 <Gizmokid2005> that info isn't stored by IP
17:51:43 <Gizmokid2005> it's stored by cookies
17:51:53 <JohnTHaller> gotta run
17:52:22 <pa_7845> well, seems that something is working badly
17:52:46 <pa_7845> anyway, thanks for your time
17:53:34 <JohnTHaller> sure thing. sorry i can't stay and help more. ride is here. post in the forums if you notice more, please
