03:08:08 <anaustringer> help!
03:08:09 <GizmoBot> anaustringer: Welcome to the PortableApps.com official chatroom. Ask your question and someone should be able to help you shortly. If you still don't get an answer, try posting on the forums: http://portableapps.com/forums
03:10:20 <anaustringer> was in the process of installing some portable apps when the device started not responding, so I shutdown portable apps and tried to reload and ever since then windows wont recognize the device and wants me to format it, but when I try to format it it tells me it's write protected. It's a verbatim tuff n tiny and doesnt have a write protection switch so I dunno what the deal is. Any help would be appreciated...
03:10:54 <gluxon> anaustringer: I'm afraid that drive might be dead.
03:11:26 <anaustringer> I just pulled it out of the package an hour ago. It was wroking fine...
03:11:26 <gluxon> anaustringer: I would try it on a different computer before officially declaring that though.
03:11:33 <anaustringer> argh
03:11:49 <anaustringer> so no other possibilities?
03:11:51 <gluxon> That's strange.
03:12:28 <anaustringer> everything was going fine until it started not responding in the middle of installing notepadd ++
03:12:49 <anaustringer> gonna try another computer real quick
03:15:40 <anaustringer> ya same thing, pop it in and it asks me to format but cant when I try cause its supposedly write protected...
03:16:21 <anaustringer> no way its a software issue?
03:16:28 <gluxon> It can't be a software issue.
03:16:48 <anaustringer> damn
03:16:57 <anaustringer> so definitely bad then?
03:17:00 <gluxon> Drives with PortableApps on them naturally recieve much more write operations.
03:17:15 <gluxon> It's possible your drive might not have been designed for that in mind.
03:17:25 <gluxon> But I haven't seen drives die from PortableApps for years now.
03:17:39 <anaustringer> I have other tuff n tiny's that have done fine with it for years.
03:17:50 <gluxon> And even if it does, it's a fault on the usb manufacturer.
03:18:05 <gluxon> anaustringer: Right. I'm assuming this was a pretty high quality drive?
03:18:12 <anaustringer> ya
03:18:21 <anaustringer> not cheap anyways
03:18:40 <gluxon> Since it just came out of the package, any warranty?
03:19:03 <anaustringer> Ya I can definitely get it replaced but man, just suprising since I just pulled it out.
03:19:38 <gluxon> anaustringer: I'd be more surprised if it died in a week, as opposed to an hour.
03:19:44 <anaustringer> heh
03:19:59 <anaustringer> alright then, thx for the help. Appreciate it.
03:20:16 <gluxon> Right. Good luck :)
03:20:24 <anaustringer> thx cya ;p

19:26:18 <zma> help!
19:26:18 <GizmoBot> zma: Welcome to the PortableApps.com official chatroom. Ask your question and someone should be able to help you shortly. If you still don't get an answer, try posting on the forums: http://portableapps.com/forums
19:27:04 <zma> Why do I need to install PortableApps on my computer to use portable applications? I understand the benefits, but for me the main reason to run anything portable is not to install anything.
19:27:46 <gluxon> zma: There's a misunderstanding here.
19:27:49 <zma> PortableApps installer actually failed for some desktop.ini reason. Actually I don't care what the error is. I want to use true portable apps that don't require installation.
19:28:07 <zma> gluxon: I hope there is :)
19:28:08 <gluxon> zma: The PortableApps.com Installer isn't an installer.
19:28:31 <gluxon> It's more like a self-extracting zip.
19:29:13 <gluxon> zma: The installer was designed in mind for simple extraction (in the desired folder) and upgrades.
19:29:32 <zma> gluxon: ah, I see, so I just need to run it somewhere like on Desktop where I have appropriate access rights to open and write files?
19:29:49 <gluxon> Well, the installer can be ran in a read-only location.
19:30:05 <gluxon> The selected install/extract path just needs to be writable (for obvious reasons)
19:30:26 <gluxon> The PortableApps.com Installer was created mainly for efficient upgrades.
19:30:32 <gluxon> Say you wanted to upgrade FirefoxPortable
19:30:53 <gluxon> All you have to do is point the new FirefoxPortable_some_version.paf.exe to your existing install path.
19:31:19 <gluxon> The installer takes care of the rest and detects that you do not want to overwrite your Data profile.
19:31:37 <gluxon> zma: Does that make sense, or did I lose you somewhere?
19:31:45 <zma> Makes sense, I was mistaken. I thought it was an installer as it looked like an installer.
19:32:47 <zma> gluxon: thanks for correcting me, I was happy to be wrong here :)
19:33:05 <gluxon> No problem. There's actually a lot of people with that misconception.
19:33:15 <gluxon> Can't blame them, or you :)
19:33:22 <gluxon> Since it does say "installer" :P
19:33:47 <gluxon> zma: I'm a bit curious as to the desktop.ini issue. Could you elaborate on that?
19:34:12 <zma> yea, "installer" sounds to me something ugly meddling with system registry and putting dll's here and there..
19:34:55 <gluxon> Right, doing that would break our portable specifications too.
19:35:33 <zma> Alright, let me try to reproduce desktop.ini issue. I go step by step.
19:35:56 <zma> 1) double click PortableApps.om_Platform_Setup_10.1.2.exe
19:36:53 <Gizmokid2005> actually gluxon, the installer (http://portableapps.com/apps/development/portableapps.com_installer ) is to build app installers for our applications
19:36:57 <Gizmokid2005> not for installing them.
19:37:10 <zma> 2) After license agreement there is "Choose Install Location", I have made a folder c:\programs\portable and I choose that
19:37:16 <gluxon> Gizmokid2005: -ot chat?
19:38:01 <zma> 3) Just after clicking install, I get "Error opening file for writing C:\programs\portable\Documents\Desktop.ini Abort/Retry/Ignore
19:38:17 <Gizmokid2005> zma: to run applications, you simply have to install them using their own installers
19:38:46 <Gizmokid2005> ie - if you want to use Firefox portable, download this package, install it, and then run it from the "FirefoxPortable" folder: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
19:39:55 <zma> Gizmokid2005: Thanks, I didn't know that.
19:41:47 <Gizmokid2005> you're welcome zma, it also seems I may have missed something.
19:42:07 <gluxon> zma: To clarify, there is "The PortableApps.com Installer" which is single program our developers use to create installers ready for distributing. Then there's the actual installer that you would get from downloading FirefoxPortable. (generated from the PortableApps.com Installer)
19:42:59 <Gizmokid2005> if you're trying to install the platform from here http://portableapps.com/download you should be able to install that just like any of the applications...but make sure you install it inside a folder
19:43:05 <Gizmokid2005> not just to C:\User\User\Desktop\
19:43:06 <zma> I suppose if I paid a little bit more attention, I may have figured it out myself :/
19:43:16 <Gizmokid2005> no worries zma, that's what we're here for.
19:44:03 <Gizmokid2005> it is best zma if you install to something like C:\PortableApps\ and then install your apps there
19:44:09 <Gizmokid2005> and just make shortcuts to the launchers as you need them
19:44:13 <Gizmokid2005> or use the platform itself.
19:44:17 <Gizmokid2005> just to keep it easy.
19:44:44 <zma> Actually I have created C:\programs folder for that purpose, as sometimes without admin rights you can't install to C:\Program Files
19:45:06 <Gizmokid2005> you're correcty
19:45:08 <Gizmokid2005> *correct*
19:45:19 <Gizmokid2005> and that will work just fine, so long as you keep it in a folder that isn't "owned" by windows.
