18:06:38 <sar3th> pa_3514, just ask. if anyone is around that knows the answer, they will answer it :)
18:07:50 <pa_3514> Thanks sar..
18:09:14 <sar3th> so, what is your question?
18:09:24 <pa_3514> I'm coming from OpenMenu and can see that if I place a directoy next to PortableApps.dot it is indeed seen. However, subdirectories are not scanned. Is there a way to add sub-directories of directories next to portableapps.com?
18:09:39 <pa_3514> I was typing it :)
18:10:25 <sar3th> unfortunately, there is no way to get the platform to scan recursively
18:10:51 <sar3th> but you can create a appinfo.ini manually in order to add apps that are in subfolders
18:11:42 <pa_3514> Oh that would be fine... is creating an appinfo.ini listed in support?
18:12:47 <sar3th> not really unfortunately. there is some documentation in the development section
18:13:20 <sar3th> but i wrote an article on how to add batch files to the platform, that works for regular applications as well
18:13:23 <sar3th> http://portableapps.com/node/21757
18:14:30 <pa_3514> That will work! Thanks for the help!!
18:14:50 <sar3th> you're welcome

18:41:36 <Steve___> Hello?
18:41:53 *** Steve___ is now known as Guest60796
18:42:00 <Guest60796> I have a question about Eraser portal
18:43:10 <Guest60796> Can any body assist me on the workings of the application? I have a USB drive that I formated, then I ran eraser portable against it... Does it still complete a security wipe or does it ingore the deivce all together. The portale app litterally took 10 seconds compared to 3 days..
18:45:00 <sar3th> well, i guess eraser portable does the same as regular eraser would do
18:47:59 <Guest60796> Ok although the windows format will erase the data and application frences, the portable eraser tool should in thery delete anything left on the USB thumb drive correct?
18:49:07 <Guest60796> Does this tool do like a low level format or something?

18:50:33 <sar3th> sorry, i don't know much about eraser, i'm not using it myself, so i'm not much of a help here :|
18:53:10 <Guest60796> Ok, AlleyKat, can you answer the questions above for me?
18:53:15 <Guest60796> Do you have any idea?
18:53:46 <Guest60796> I have a USB drive that I formated, then I ran eraser portable against it... Does it still complete a security wipe or does it ingore the deivce all together. The portale app litterally took 10 seconds compared to 3 days..
18:53:49 <Guest60796> Ok although the windows format will erase the data and application frences, the portable eraser tool should in thery delete anything left on the USB thumb drive correct?
18:54:56 <AlleyKat> Guest60796: do you know anything about drive partitions and sectors?
18:55:34 <Guest60796> Yes, but I was referencing the behavoir of the portable eraser tool.
18:56:15 <AlleyKat> I don't know the aforementioned eraser program, but most 'secure erase' programs simply overwrites the contents x number of times with some data - be it zeroes, ones or just random/pattern
18:57:00 <AlleyKat> if you need 'forever' secure wipe, desroy the drive. If you need 'pretty secure', overwrite it 8x
18:57:45 <AlleyKat> that'll require more than normal software tools and methods to ever recover anything
18:58:26 <AlleyKat> ie. the cost will be well beyond the value of any data (pretty much anyway)
18:58:44 <Guest60796> Ok perfect Alleykat. I appreciate your knowledge. I will test this. If this is indeed true, all my boot records should be tarnished after my security wipe?
18:59:33 <Guest60796> I currently have it set for 4x's
19:00:28 <AlleyKat> that should be good enough, we're probably talking in the 1000
19:00:41 <AlleyKat> 's of $ to recover anything after that
19:01:00 <Guest60796> Ok. Ill give it a try and see what happens. Thank you so much! I appreicate that.
19:01:08 <AlleyKat> uhm boot records? Those rarely contain anything useful anyway ;>
