00:28:52 <jleon088> Hi support chat? Is anyone receiving questions now?
00:29:00 <AluisioASG> yep
00:29:17 <jleon088> Thanks AluisioASG.
00:29:45 <jleon088> I installed Chrome Portable on my data drive and uninstalled it from my boot drive.
00:30:27 <jleon088> However, every time I run Chrome from a pinned icon on my taskbar, it opens a different instance of Chrome that does not have my bookmarks.
00:30:59 <AluisioASG> Hm. I know what's happening.
00:31:19 <jleon088> Also, the version I open from the portable apps seems to still be writing files to my boot SSD, according to SpaceSniffer.
00:32:01 <jleon088> Typically, the two instances don't happen?
00:32:13 <AluisioASG> In order to make Chrome portable, we use a wrapper that pass the right parameters in order to it to write the profile in the correct location.
00:32:42 <AluisioASG> When you pin Chrome, you are bypassing the wrapper, so it works as if it were installed locally.
00:33:06 <jleon088> Ahh, that is great information!
00:33:55 <jleon088> Do you know of anyway to allow Portable Chrome to have a pinned icon?
00:34:51 <AluisioASG> There is this tip to pin Firefox Portable (which might work with Chrome): http://portableapps.com/node/30269
00:34:57 <AluisioASG> And there is also this: http://portableapps.com/node/31515
00:35:05 <AluisioASG> But I've never tried them.
00:36:25 <jleon088> So far, that is looking to fit my symptoms (the two icons appearing)! I will read over them now and let you know the result if your still here.

My anti-virus is preventing execution of files named this way, and I cannot disable it (admin-controlled). Manually downloading the file and removing all the dots except the last one, works. 16:37:22 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Like nearly all screens nowadays. I have heard that it is cheaper to use the same panels for televisions and PC screens, that's why they have same dimensions.
16:37:26 <ZachThibeau> width and hight?
16:38:41 <TPFC-SYSTEM> 57x43 cm (diameter: 24 inches)
16:39:08 <ZachThibeau> my screen can go 1080p but my graphics card even though supports hdmi doesn't want to make use of it :/
16:39:25 <TPFC-SYSTEM> :(
16:40:28 <ZachThibeau> and mine is a 32inch led tv

16:42:11 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Multithreading is hard but rewarding... :)
16:42:52 <ZachThibeau> I use co-threading in my irc application
16:44:09 <ZachThibeau> since typically multithreading or cothreading isn't really needed but can still help at times.
16:53:08 <Sk1llSh0t> how easy is it to make a portable apps launcher/paf installer?
16:54:58 <Sk1llSh0t> for an open source/freeware program. the program itself is already portable actually
16:58:11 <ZachThibeau> most programs that come with a portable version aka a zip file generally isn't portable so make sure you do regshots to be sure and find out if there are any environmental variables most times programs saves data to %APPDATA% and thirdly read the PortableApps.com Launcher documentation it describes what functions you need to make an app truely PortableApps.com spec compatible
17:00:13 <Sk1llSh0t> http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=greatnews&m=Search
17:00:33 <Sk1llSh0t> it appears to be completely portable.
17:01:24 <Sk1llSh0t> so just follow the launcher documentation
17:01:57 <ZachThibeau> often times what PortableFreeware calls portable isn't really portable at all
17:02:03 <Sk1llSh0t> oh. haha
17:02:55 <Sk1llSh0t> ok. i'll see if i can take a registry snapshot and figure out if it changes anythign in registry when it runs
17:03:05 <Sk1llSh0t> and check appdata folders as well.
17:03:31 <ZachThibeau> but the documentation of the launcher is a starting point, there are some apps in the PortableApps.com app list that use the launcher like PChatPortable that you can see examples of
17:04:34 <TPFC-SYSTEM> On TPFC (i.e. The Portable Freeware Collection), you need to read the "Writes settings to" section. If it's "None" or "Application folder", the application can be called portable (IMO). However, there are also entires where "Writes settings to" is "Windows registry".
17:05:12 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Our approach is to let the visitor decide if a certain application is portable or not (and provide information for that decision).
17:05:39 <Sk1llSh0t> it says writes settings to application folder
17:05:56 <ZachThibeau> while our approach is to make sure the application is portable fully
17:07:45 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Sk1llSh0t: based on that information, GreatNews is at least mostly portable. (Its entry lacks the "Stealth" field which would mean full portabilSk1llSh0t: based on that information, GreatNews is at least mostly portable. (Its entry lacks the "Stealth" field which would mean full portability.)
17:08:03 <TPFC-SYSTEM> Argh, accidental double-message.
17:08:08 <Sk1llSh0t> ha. np
17:08:27 <Sk1llSh0t> it does appear to write files to a temp directory
17:08:39 <Sk1llSh0t> but there is a setting in the program to clean that up on exit.
17:08:53 <Sk1llSh0t> so i'd have to make sure it writes those to the appropriate place
17:12:37 <Sk1llSh0t> is there a good disk monitor tool that detects when files are being written to disk?
17:12:50 <Sk1llSh0t> when and what files are written to disk

19:56:31 <Simeon> @Alcasar: just rerun the installer. What exactly is your problem? What app?
19:58:04 <Alcasar> I used the auto-updater that comes with the platform and now LibreOffice doesn't work anymore.
19:58:24 <Alcasar> I don't have the installer
19:59:14 <Simeon> ah. Then (if you bandwidth isnt too tight), you can redownload the installer from http://portableapps.com/apps/office/libreoffice_portable and run it.
19:59:20 <Simeon> That should fix things.
19:59:35 <Simeon> did the install complete?
20:00:13 <Alcasar> no
20:00:40 <Alcasar> Ok, so no other solution then to manualy re-install
20:00:47 <Simeon> what happened? error message?
20:01:41 <Simeon> you could delete /libreofficeportable/App/Appdata and install it anew. That would do the same as manually downloading and running the installer.
20:01:43 <Alcasar> no it just got stuck and i finaly got tired so i tried to restart the process using system explorer
20:02:26 <Alcasar> deleting the appdata will make it reupdate?
20:03:06 <Alcasar> I would like to keep my data if possible
20:03:58 <Simeon> the installer will look for the appdata files to check which app is installed (if I remember correctly). so if yo delete it you can reinstall. All your data is inside Libreofficeportable/Data and wont be touched. If you want to extra cautious, you can make a backup of that folder before.
20:07:48 <Alcasar> There was no appdata so i deleted appinfo and defaultdata
20:08:13 <Simeon> right. appinfo is the name. my mistake.
20:08:58 <Simeon> Besides that, LibreOffice is the app that takes the longest to install. I had 30 minutes on a really slow drive. sometimes nothing happened for up to 5 minutes.
20:10:32 <Alcasar> If only we could see the installer working as when we install manualy
20:11:35 <Alcasar> I hope it'll finish installing before the public computer i'm on shutsdown
