11:20:14 <pa_6305> I switched my computer at work from XP to Win7 recently, I know, it was a time. Because I don't like to much folders in the root of the C drive, I always have my PA folder in a "Program Files" folder of the Windows, and there is a place, where the recent problems came. This folder has a slightly different name in German Windows, it calls "Programme" (and same with x86, cause I'm on the x64 installation) here. So in Vista and W
11:20:23 <pa_6305> to call the folders "Program Files" in any localized version of Windows. Then for compatibility reasons they make a link with old name and hide a real folder. So in explorer user see the old structure, but in the command line one can see the real structure.
11:20:44 <pa_6305> If I use an old package installer (like 7zip for example), there is no problem. But with new one, the one with no stick in icon but with a box in it, it simply can't be installed. Installer has a problem to write the files there. I can easily choose the folder in the folder selection dialog. Here I see the localized names. After I choose the folder, I can see a real name in the input line of the installer. But after I pressing
11:20:46 <pa_6305> error message that this isn't a valid folder and I have to choose another one or subfolder. I checked everything, rights and so on, but nothing helped me. Of course, if I create an PA folder in the root of the C drive, I have no problems. The same is with an old PA packaged applications, as I already wrote. Is this a problem with installer or did I oversaw something?

14:26:47 <pa_6305> Thank you, I know where the news are. I mean, if it's true and I knew this thing about Program Files, it would save me a couple of hours looking for a non existing error.
14:27:13 <pa_6305> Hi JohnTHaller
14:27:18 <JohnTHaller> hi
14:28:13 <pa_6305> JohnTHaller: is this thing about some blocked paths true?
14:28:46 <pa_6305> JohnTHaller: I mean, what AluisioASG wrote.
14:29:45 <JohnTHaller> Program Files has never been supported or recommended. It won't work at all on Vista/7/8 unless you disable UAC (which is a bad idea). Several apps switch to 'local' mode when in Program Files and won't run portably no matter what as well.
14:30:34 <AluisioASG> JohnTHaller: I think it's time for us to provide a better error message, uh?
14:30:57 <JohnTHaller> So, we finally disallowed it in the Installer about... hmmm... a year ago? And added it to the Launcher in the last few months.
14:31:32 <pa_6305> You mean, because the PA program need to write in some folders, which is simply impossible with standard settings and UAC?
14:32:31 <JohnTHaller> Yes, that's why all apps fail on Vista and up. And if you have them there in XP and upgrade your Windows, they suddenly all fail. But in addition to that, some apps detect when they are in Program Files and switch to local mode, storing settings in registry and APPDATA
14:37:11 <pa_6305> OK, I see. I knew about this kind of UAC problems with some old software, even Outlook 2003 has problems here. I thought, that this is a strange bug, just have something to do with this kind of localization, so the most of people didn't get it, because the folders names wasn't localized in many international versions. But now I understand the reason. Anyway, it would be better to give some message, which isn't so general and
14:39:08 <JohnTHaller> We'll be adding a better message in the future.

14:40:41 <pa_6305> JohnTHaller: Ok, so the "PortableApps" folder is still the best choice? Or any other folder with any other name, but not the Program Files or Program Files x86? There are no other "problem" folders here? One can use some subfolder in "Users" folder for example?
14:41:33 <JohnTHaller> PortableApps is recommended as all the installers will automatically find it there when you run them. Pro-Tip - The updated installers will also find USERPROFILE\PortableApps as well.
14:41:47 <JohnTHaller> But you can install anywhere except within Program Files / Program Files (x86)

14:54:54 <pa_6305> JohnTHaller|away: OK, thank you all once again, But I really think, that this kind of information is really important. So it has to be in some kind of FAQ.
