03:19:57 <pa_9570> Why does Google Chrome Portable crash on me when a facebook tab is left open for long periods of time unused?
03:21:10 <gluxon> pa_9570: I'd imagine its because the computer you're using is limited in RAM.
03:21:16 <gluxon> *RAM = memory
03:21:54 <pa_9570> no... 4 GB? nothing happening besides?
03:22:10 <pa_9570> it's the most updated version
03:22:30 <gluxon> pa_9570: Any Chrome extensions?
03:22:56 <pa_9570> google translate
03:22:58 <pa_9570> only
03:23:48 <gluxon> pa_9570: I'm afraid if it is Google Chrome crashing, then the problem has to be taken to Google.
03:24:15 <gluxon> pa_9570: 4GB is more memory than my machine has, so its strange Facebook would crash it.
03:24:20 <pa_9570> yeah
03:24:22 <gluxon> I'd imagine its something else.
03:24:38 <Gizmokid2005> You can try with a clean profile.
03:24:47 <Gizmokid2005> to eliminate a data issue
03:24:47 <pa_9570> yes. the app used to crash due to shockwave flash plug-in failing on some yahoo videos
03:25:03 <pa_9570> and i've tried deleting and reinstalling the entire app
03:25:19 <Gizmokid2005> do you use this particular installation on any other machines?
03:25:48 <pa_9570> ummm... i use it on a different FLASH DRIVE, if that's what you mean
03:25:55 <pa_9570> an older version
03:27:37 <Gizmokid2005> nope, on an actually different computer.
03:28:01 <pa_9570> uhhhh, i've used this latest version on the same flash drive on a different computer, yes.
03:30:35 <pa_9570> just an aside for now, but do you deal with usb problems as well?
03:33:17 <gluxon> pa_9570: I haven't.
03:33:35 <gluxon> pa_9570: Gizmokid2005 is asking if you can reproduce the Chrome issue on another computer.
03:41:04 <pa_9570> help?
03:41:05 <GizmoBot> pa_9570: Welcome to the PortableApps.com official chatroom. Ask your question and someone should be able to help you shortly. If you still don't get an answer, try posting on the forums: http://portableapps.com/forums
03:41:20 <pa_9570> oh
03:41:47 <pa_9570> uh. i have not used facebook on another computer long enough for this issue to occur
03:42:49 <gluxon> pa_9570: I would try it sometime, to make sure the problem isn't only on your main computer.
03:43:04 <pa_9570> um. ok.
03:43:14 <gluxon> What was the USB issue you were describing?
03:43:58 <pa_9570> but now it flat out doesn't work because my usb doesn't work anymore... pretty recently after i downloaded the portable apps platform.
03:44:14 <pa_9570> ok. usb problem:
03:45:13 <pa_9570> recently (a few days ago), chrome portable froze on me. i hard-rebooted my computer (Task Manager couldn't close it) and i started system normally
03:45:49 <pa_9570> but then the my computer screen loaded really slowly (2 minutes compared to normally 5 seconds)
03:46:21 <pa_9570> i tried to open the flash drive, and message pops up asking if i want to scan and fix removable disk drive
03:47:11 <pa_9570> i wait and it takes longer than normal. finally it ends up not responding. no progress could be visibly seen on the dialog box.
03:47:15 <pa_9570> end
03:47:32 <gluxon> And your USB was dead after that?
03:47:46 <gluxon> It looks like the issue is your computer though.
03:48:17 <pa_9570> dead. as in i can't reformat, and the computer literally slows down ALL local processes when it is plugged in. chrome and other applications on COMPUTER work fine though
03:48:41 <pa_9570> but i experimented and without the flash drive, it's back to normal speed.
03:49:26 <darksabre761> Just piping in because I've had random USB troubles before. One time that happened, I had to "uninstall" the flash drive from Device Manager. Then when you plug it in next, it should "reinstall" and should be fine.
03:49:41 <pa_9570> best example: i opened 4 my computers and one by one, they all went "not responding". i clicked norton on the taskbar, right-clicked randomly, and nothing came out.
03:49:58 <pa_9570> i manually removed flash drive and everything just loaded instantly
03:51:15 <pa_9570> @darksabre761: the my computer window and related screens slow down greatly when i plug in my flash drive. will try now though
03:51:22 <pa_9570> might take me a while.
03:51:36 <darksabre761> you might be able to uninstall it without it being plugged in
03:51:44 <pa_9570> really? ok.
03:51:47 <gluxon> pa_9570: Do you have autorun enabled?
03:51:56 <gluxon> To execute automatically?
03:52:40 <pa_9570> autorun... for my flash drive? sorry, sounds unfamiliar.
03:53:11 <darksabre761> pa: the flash drive might be listed under "disk drives"
03:53:30 <pa_9570> yes. i think.
03:53:46 <pa_9570> so right-click? and uninstall? and then replug usb?
03:53:56 <darksabre761> yeah
03:54:03 <pa_9570> i need to restart computer.
03:54:20 <darksabre761> never had to do that, but if it says so
03:54:22 <pa_9570> will i be able to arrive back at this chat room afterwards?
03:54:44 <darksabre761> we'll be here
03:54:54 <pa_9570> ok. thx.

04:00:55 <pa_1305> hi. am back
04:01:03 <darksabre761> hello again
04:01:23 <pa_1305> only driver under disk drives (hitachi) reinstalled itself on restart
04:01:45 <darksabre761> did you plug the usb back in yet
04:01:53 <pa_1305> shall i try inserting my flash drive now?
04:01:59 <darksabre761> go for it
04:02:05 <darksabre761> it should reinstall as soon as you do
04:02:08 <darksabre761> might take a minute though
04:02:40 <pa_1305> the driver reinstalled as soon as the computer restarted, actually
04:02:57 <pa_1305> and i'll scan and fix the drive?
04:03:03 <darksabre761> yes
04:03:33 <darksabre761> when you do that, it puts fragments of files that were recovered into a hidden folder called "Found.001" on the drive
04:03:56 <darksabre761> if chrome acts up again, it might be because parts of it were corrupt. Reinstalling should fix that
04:04:36 <pa_1305> yes. but previously, when my drive wasn't working, whenever i attempted to scan & fix, the progress bar didn't move, but task manager said it was working.
04:04:57 <darksabre761> that's nomal, especially if you check both boxes
04:05:05 <darksabre761> the larger the drive, the longer it takes
04:05:05 <pa_1305> i leave it like that for a while, but at some point, the dialog box disappears.
04:05:27 <pa_1305> it's 16 GB, and i only checked the scan and fix, i didn't attempt recovery of bad sectors
04:05:41 <darksabre761> bad sectors is usually what sucks up memory
04:05:46 <pa_1305> it's actually only half used.
04:05:52 <pa_1305> just side note
04:06:01 <darksabre761> it shouldn't take too long then this time
04:06:12 <darksabre761> i have a 64 and it usually takes 5 min at the most
04:06:36 <pa_1305> i've done the scan before, and it doesn't take too long. but what i mean is the problem is 15 min. and not even a tiny bit of green is showing
04:06:40 <pa_1305> in the progress bar
04:06:49 <gluxon> CPU architecture shouldn't affect how long it takes to scan/repair your drive.
04:07:02 <darksabre761> sorry, 64 meaning 64 GB flash drive
04:08:01 <darksabre761> pa: if it does take that long, it could mean the flash drive itself is on it's way out. one way around that is cheating and not scanning it, though that's far from recommended
04:08:14 <pa_1305> i have done that.
04:08:22 <pa_1305> and the whole drive is unaccessible to me.
04:08:52 <pa_1305> not sure that's a word. but also, i tried (re)formatting the device, but same thing happens. progress bar: nothing
04:09:07 <darksabre761> during scan and fix, it locks down the drive to make sure nothing gets changed
04:09:16 <darksabre761> and yeah, it sounds like your drive might need replacing soon
04:09:34 <pa_1305> hmmm? i only got it 3/4 years ago.
04:09:46 <pa_1305> ugghhh... shady taiwanese manufacturers....
04:09:48 <darksabre761> sometimes it's not the age but the wear and tear on it
04:10:10 <darksabre761> especially if you've had mutiple problems on the device, multiple reformats, etc
04:10:18 <pa_1305> i've never reformatted.
04:10:31 <pa_1305> i only attempted to this time because nothing else was working.
04:10:37 <gluxon> Ah, sorry.
04:10:37 *** gluxon has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
04:10:59 <darksabre761> makes sense
04:11:33 <darksabre761> i've had stuff like this happen before, and it came down to the drive having too many internal problems
04:11:42 <darksabre761> admittedly it was a cheap drive, but still
04:11:50 <pa_1305> so did you just forsake it for a new one?
04:12:08 <darksabre761> only because i accidentally broke the usb part off
04:12:20 <pa_1305> ah. lol.
04:12:28 <darksabre761> before then, i did a lot of the same steps i'm telling you, and i manged to get it working again
04:12:37 <darksabre761> i just skipped the scan and fix each time
04:12:49 <pa_1305> oh, and not sure if this is relevant, or if you have any problems similar to this, but the problem usb is a 3.0
04:13:12 <darksabre761> i don't think that's an issue, 3.0 is fully backward compatable with 2.0
04:14:07 *** gluxon (~gluxon@unaffiliated/gluxon) has joined #portableapps
04:14:21 <pa_1305> should i just cancel the scan and fix task now? the progress bar has not changed.
04:14:40 <darksabre761> yes
04:14:51 <darksabre761> then try ejecting the drive
04:15:11 <darksabre761> replug it in and then don't scan
04:15:12 <pa_1305> attempting...
04:15:17 <darksabre761> that may be your only way around
04:15:41 <pa_1305> it isn't giving me any response.
04:16:07 <pa_1305> i hit eject via taskbar icon, and nothing happens. no dialog box, etc.
04:16:14 <darksabre761> give it a minute
04:16:28 <darksabre761> i hate tellign anyone to remove the drive without ejecting
04:16:32 <pa_1305> works within 10 sec for my other usb.
04:16:41 <darksabre761> right
04:17:01 <pa_1305> i've already done this before, and the dialog box telling me i can't always shows up AFTER i do so. :D
04:17:20 <darksabre761> yeah, funny how windows does that sometimes
04:17:30 <pa_1305> as if the usb being plugged in actually prevents it from showing the window
04:17:39 <pa_1305> how long should i give it?
04:17:45 <darksabre761> about a minute
04:17:47 <pa_1305> ok
04:17:59 <darksabre761> if it takes longer, it's probably frozen
04:18:38 <pa_1305> no. it's not frozen. previously, i got tired of waiting, and it all responds after i remove it manually
04:18:49 <darksabre761> yeah, i know what you mean
04:18:53 <pa_1305> but nothing happens when it's plugged in.
04:19:10 <darksabre761> i've never figured out why that happens, just ways around it
04:19:32 <pa_1305> im going to just take it out manually now.
04:19:37 <darksabre761> okay
04:20:34 <pa_1305> voila! "Windows is unable to stop the device 'USB Mass Storage Device'. Don't remove this device while it is still in use. Close any programs using this deveice and then remove it."
04:21:00 <darksabre761> okay, leave it out for a little bit, make sure taks manager isn't freaking out about anything, then plug it back in
04:21:17 *** gluxon has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
04:21:38 <pa_1305> task manager is fine. plugging back in in 30 sec.
04:22:28 <pa_1305> not scanning or fixing... now what?
04:22:39 <darksabre761> is it showing up in my computer?
04:22:51 <pa_1305> yes.
04:23:04 <darksabre761> try opening it, and then try the portableapps platform
04:23:27 <pa_1305> it is VERY slow in opening. unlike before.
04:23:28 <darksabre761> if those work, i'd download chrome portable again and install over your current installation
04:24:02 <pa_1305> the farthest i've ever gotten doing similar things you suggested was this step.
04:24:11 <darksabre761> hmm
04:24:28 <darksabre761> and it just doesn't open? or does it after a long time
04:24:30 <pa_1305> the progress bar goes to almost full and then stays there. after a while, not responding sets in
04:24:40 <darksabre761> okay
04:24:50 <darksabre761> unfortunately, that would be the extent of my knowledge then
04:25:02 <pa_1305> i think i got it open ONCE. immediately after restarting the computer with drive stuck in
