01:48:19 <pa_5837> Hi
01:51:00 <pa_5837> I'm having an issue copying and pasting from notepad. When I try to paste to putty, not all pastes or it stalls.
01:56:19 <JohnTHaller> Hi pa_5837. Sorry to hear about your issue. Can you paste into other apps?
01:56:37 <pa_5837> yes
01:56:51 <JohnTHaller> What field are you attempting to paste into within Putty?
02:00:54 <pa_5837> I'm trying to paste new ip settings for switch.
02:01:23 <JohnTHaller> So just an ip address, possibly with a port, correct?
02:02:26 <pa_5837> yes
02:02:58 <JohnTHaller> And what happens when you try to paste... putty itself hangs and stops accepting input like mouse clicks, etc? Or is it just not pasting?
02:03:39 <JohnTHaller> And you're pasting just into the main Host Name field, correct?
02:06:49 <pa_5837> Yes. It either won't paste everything I copied or it won't paste anything and mouse doesn't do anything in putty.
02:07:17 <pa_5837> Yes, Host Name field.
02:08:04 <JohnTHaller> Hmmm. I fired up PuTTY Portable and tried pasting 1.2.3.4 into the Host Name field and it worked without issue on my Windows 7 x64 box. Any chance something else on your PC could be interfering? Perhaps a clipboard manager or antivirus monitoring the clipboard?

02:15:50 <pa_5837> I use notepad to copy and paste. I clipboard manger installed.
02:16:17 <pa_5837> I don't have clipboard manager installed.
02:16:43 <JohnTHaller> Have you tried restarting PuTTY and, if that failed, restarting your PC just to see if that helps? I can't think of anything offhand that could interfere, but I know I've had my Windows clipboard die on occasion and a restart fixed it.
02:17:09 <JohnTHaller> If I recall correctly, I think it was my Virtualbox VM that messed it up (it can integrate the host OS clipboard with the guest VM)
02:22:42 <pa_5837> Yes. Yes. I have windows 8 x64.
02:23:24 <JohnTHaller> So a reboot didn't fix it either? Did it ever work properly on this PC?
02:23:48 <pa_5837> No. No.
02:24:06 <PatrickPowell> Hi JohnTHaller at some point I need to get a hold of you about Rednotebook
02:24:25 <JohnTHaller> pa_5837: Ok, let me fire up my Windows 8 VM to be sure the app works properly there
02:24:42 <JohnTHaller> PatrickPowell: Ok, hold please while support is ongoing...
02:24:51 <PatrickPowell> np
02:25:10 <JohnTHaller> pa_5837: Are you running Windows 8 or did you update to Windows 8.1 already?
02:25:19 <JohnTHaller> I want to be sure to test under the right version
02:31:42 <pa_5837> 8
02:32:24 <JohnTHaller> Ok, firing up WIn8 x64
02:38:47 <JohnTHaller> pa_5837: I was able to copy 1.2.3.4 from Notepad in my Windows 8 VM and paste it into PuTTY Portable successfully. So it's not a PuTTY and Windows 8 compatibility issue. At least it seems not to be.
02:39:15 <JohnTHaller> pa_5837: Is this an existing install of PuTTY that you've used successfully on other machines or a new one?
02:39:26 <pa_5837> No.
02:39:42 <JohnTHaller> So, a new one?
02:39:57 <pa_5837> Yes a new one.
02:40:09 <JohnTHaller> Have you tried running regular PuTTY downloaded form the publisher on this machine?
02:43:06 <pa_5837> No.
02:43:56 <JohnTHaller> I'd suggest that as the next step. You don't need to actually connect to a site or anything, as it will save things locally. But fire it up and paste into that field just to try it.
02:44:07 <JohnTHaller> It's available here. A single exe called putty.exe: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
02:44:30 <JohnTHaller> If that fails, then we know it's an incompatibility with putty and something on your machine.
02:51:46 <pa_5837> Thanks for your help will try tomorrow.
02:52:16 <JohnTHaller> You're welcome. If need be, we can file a bug with the publisher. If you need more help, feel free to come back or pop into the online forums.

03:50:01 <JohnTHaller> Welcome back PatrickPowell
03:50:26 <PatrickPowell> JohnTHaller: TY TIme warner not being nice to me LOL
03:53:00 <PatrickPowell> JohnTHaller: Sorry about before did not see the tet as had another window partially covering the chat Did not mean to interupt support going on
03:53:49 <JohnTHaller> No worries, sir
03:54:10 <JohnTHaller> I hear you on Time Warner. I have a Verizon hotspot as a backup due to their semi-regular issues.
03:54:41 <PatrickPowell> well I am looking into something like that for emeergency use
03:54:51 <PatrickPowell> heck missed almost 2 day of work fightng with them
03:55:05 <PatrickPowell> I swear they are throttling connection
03:55:32 <PatrickPowell> I go from .32 mps to 15.67 mbps and yet they say nothing wrong
04:00:17 <JohnTHaller> Yeah. I pay for 50 down 5 up. First 2 years of it if I used more than 1.5 up, the connection dropped. Went through 3 modems and 2 level 3 tech visits.
04:01:23 <PatrickPowell> well when I asked for a level 4 tech they asked why? I said ping my modem tell me if it is being seen. Guy said yes I said WOW How odd since it is unplugged. That guy hung up on me
04:01:41 <PatrickPowell> Now seems whenever I call I get level 3 tech immediately
04:03:32 <PatrickPowell> BTW found a bbug in Rednotebook with an entry being left in Appdata if user adds custom dictionary, also if user adds dictionary it would be deleted on an upgrade. No one has reported it yet Hope I can get approval for the Beta to go public as it is 1.8.0 which is good jump from current windows one of 1.7.1
04:03:35 <JohnTHaller> Heh. So what did you want to chat about? I'm gonna grab a bite shortly
04:03:38 <JohnTHaller> Ah

04:04:22 <JohnTHaller> You want to release beta to the standard channel? We generally don't do betas except for testing. There are only a couple rare exceptions. WHen will 1.8.0 go stable?
04:04:24 <PatrickPowell> but the issue is with my fox if a user has had the dictionary and a custom dictionary then I need to figure away to get the custom dictionary ut of appdata
04:04:49 <PatrickPowell> Well It ws being tested and it shows as none beta so to say
04:05:01 <JohnTHaller> none beta?
04:05:09 <PatrickPowell> so was hoping He would release it at same time as us
04:05:17 <JohnTHaller> ah
04:05:24 <PatrickPowell> well when you look at the help about it does not say beta
04:05:45 <JohnTHaller> Does the site call it a beta though?
04:06:06 <PatrickPowell> It went out via email the Sourceforge download calls it bta
04:06:10 <PatrickPowell> beta
04:06:26 <PatrickPowell> but it is not even released on his site
04:06:50 <JohnTHaller> Stay in touch with the dev on it about when he's releasing it. We can work on getting it out the same time.
04:07:07 <PatrickPowell> The problem right now is anyway we look at it the custom dictionary if in use now is in appdata
04:07:19 <JohnTHaller> Can we detect and move it back?
04:07:34 <PatrickPowell> Yes I have it coded that way now
04:08:03 <PatrickPowell> but technically no way of knowing if the current appdata entry is from a local install or from the leftover bug
04:08:19 <PatrickPowell> which would mean a manual copy to our data folder
04:08:44 <PatrickPowell> as once it is in you are folder it auto moves it back and forth
04:09:01 <JohnTHaller> Where does it go within APPDATA?
04:09:29 <PatrickPowell> Hang sec
04:10:12 <PatrickPowell> %LOCALAPPDATA%\enchant
04:10:39 <PatrickPowell> that is the entire folder I would e moving
04:10:45 <JohnTHaller> Ah. So we can't backup/restore enchant since it is shared.
04:11:00 <PatrickPowell> we can on our side
04:11:17 <JohnTHaller> But we'd interfere with local apps that also use LOCALAPPDATA\enchant
04:11:17 <PatrickPowell> problem lies is that if they have already used a dictionary then it left that there
04:11:43 <JohnTHaller> I mean the directory. We can backup/restore individual files within it.
04:11:45 <PatrickPowell> not if it was in our directory and then we backup restore
04:12:01 <PatrickPowell> hence I backup the entire directory
04:12:22 <PatrickPowell> it sems to work
04:12:35 <PatrickPowell> what my issue is if they already have it there because of bug
04:12:47 <JohnTHaller> I'm saying we can not backup/restore LOCALAPPDATA\enchant. We can't. Otherwise if they have custom dictionaries in there used by local app Acme. When they run Acme while Rednotebook Portable is running, those dictionaries would not be there.
04:13:07 <PatrickPowell> arghhhhhhhhhh
04:13:21 <PatrickPowell> in that case we are really up creek
04:13:38 <JohnTHaller> We could do individual files into and out of it.
04:13:39 <PatrickPowell> As I worked out the solution I thought and nw even that won't work
04:13:42 <JohnTHaller> And then remove if empty
04:14:00 <PatrickPowell> but no way to know what language they may have in it
04:14:04 <JohnTHaller> Does the app itself support adding a custom dictionary?
04:14:13 <JohnTHaller> I mean in the GUI
04:14:15 <PatrickPowell> only through the enchant
04:14:25 <JohnTHaller> Or does the user have to add the file themselves to a specific directory?
04:14:33 <PatrickPowell> it uses open office dictionary'
04:14:41 <PatrickPowell> yes the ydo
04:14:51 <PatrickPowell> install it to
04:15:09 <JohnTHaller> Is there an installer for the dictionary?
04:15:11 <PatrickPowell> the app/rednotebook/share/enchant/myspell directory
04:15:44 <PatrickPowell> no what you do is grab the open office open it with 7zip then copy 2 files to the location
04:15:51 <PatrickPowell> restart and dictionary works
04:15:57 <JohnTHaller> Right. Ok. So it's all manual based on the user doing it.
04:16:05 <PatrickPowell> correct
04:16:22 <PatrickPowell> however I discovered it works but when it is run if you add words to dictionary
04:16:28 <PatrickPowell> those are saved in the app data
04:16:30 <JohnTHaller> So we just have instructions on where to put the files within RednotebookPortable\Data\whateverpath and then handle moving the files back and forth ourselves with PAL
04:16:39 <JohnTHaller> Oh ok
04:16:46 <JohnTHaller> What are the file names?
04:16:46 <PatrickPowell> correct which I have done
04:16:54 <PatrickPowell> depends on language
04:17:01 <JohnTHaller> I know. But what are they
04:17:09 <PatrickPowell> *.aff
04:17:13 <PatrickPowell> and star.dic
04:17:14 <JohnTHaller> As in what's an example
04:17:18 <JohnTHaller> A real example
04:17:24 <PatrickPowell> ok one sec
04:18:11 <PatrickPowell> en_ca.dic
04:18:15 <PatrickPowell> en_ca.aff
04:18:23 <PatrickPowell> or
04:18:28 <PatrickPowell> es_es.aff
04:18:33 <PatrickPowell> es_es.dic
04:18:34 <JohnTHaller> Ok. So .dic would be the one from openoffice and .aiff would be the custom additions?
04:18:40 <JohnTHaller> .aff I mean
04:18:51 <PatrickPowell> not necessarily those are from open office
04:19:23 <JohnTHaller> So which one is the one from openoffice and which one is the custom additions?
04:19:31 <PatrickPowell> custom entries in appdata are en_us.exc
04:19:38 <PatrickPowell> en_us.dic
04:19:42 <JohnTHaller> Ah, THAT is what I was looking for.
04:19:51 <JohnTHaller> The file containing the custom entries
04:20:23 <JohnTHaller> It'll require custom code, but it's doable.
04:20:25 <PatrickPowell> the last two are what is in appdata for the en_us which is two file sin the directory
04:20:46 <JohnTHaller> So .exc is the custom entries no matter the dictionary type?
04:20:47 <PatrickPowell> well I have custom coded the ini for launcher to move back and forth etc
04:21:31 <PatrickPowell> leet me test something
04:21:33 <JohnTHaller> We don't need custom code for the move. We may be able to just create .exc files for each .aff and .dic on launch to ensure they have matches and will back up all files that are already there.
04:21:36 <PatrickPowell> hang about minute
04:23:06 <PatrickPowell> JohnTHaller: Dang just discovered another issue
04:23:34 <PatrickPowell> this going to be harder too

04:27:54 <PatrickPowell> yup I see two issues now
04:28:05 <PatrickPowell> they will be adding dictionaries into the app
04:28:22 <PatrickPowell> that we can handle but the bg issue wil be what happens to users that already have them there
04:28:50 <PatrickPowell> and then off course the bug I found about appdata
04:28:59 <PatrickPowell> thanks got to runn ttyl
04:29:07 <GordCaswell> there's nothing you can do about it if there's already dictionaries added to a user's system.
04:29:27 <GordCaswell> they get treated as having been added purposely to the local system.
04:29:44 *** zooyork has quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
04:29:57 <PatrickPowell> yup but the probale become if they added to portable then it left entries in appdata
04:30:26 <PatrickPowell> and if they go to a difference computer then they do not have the custom dictionary as it is sitting in the computer that was first used
04:30:43 <GordCaswell> yep, and we can't tell if they added them using a local install or a portable one, so we have to treat them as local. we can only handle from now on.
04:30:57 <PatrickPowell> true
04:31:07 <PatrickPowell> guess that wil be way to go
04:31:47 <PatrickPowell> anwya wil get to ya in forum I guess once I can get handle of this
