01:35:12 <pa_3195> Hello, can you tell me if portable apps can be used as a bootable os?
01:36:21 <pa_3195> Help!

02:23:14 <tfgbd> wha?
02:23:28 <tfgbd> How could you boot an app launcher
02:23:50 <tfgbd> was he trying to ask if it could be used from a live CD like a Windows PE environemnt?

02:24:53 <pa_9738> running exe's are blocked, will I be able to use the portable apps?

02:36:52 <Gizmokid2005> tfgbd: yes. That's a common question.

02:44:28 <tfgbd> If running exes are blocked, I doubt it
02:44:53 <tfgbd> Though, some admins don't block them and as long as the app doesn't require admit access, it should run fine
02:45:10 <tfgbd> I'm using a bunch of portable apps on a public server as we speak
02:54:14 <tfgbd> admin*
03:18:07 <auscompgeek> tfgbd: the guy left before you could answer
04:28:59 <tfgbd> I was actually thinking of doing something like PortableApps myself.
04:29:29 <tfgbd> You guys get most of your hosting free via Sourceforge, right
04:31:07 <tfgbd> I was thinking of maybe starting to compile and provide binaries for a number of OSS projects for the less used Windows NT and Windows CE processor architectures like ARM, MIPS or x86 (WinCE)
04:31:29 <tfgbd> PortableApps doesn't actually compile most stuff from source, right
04:31:47 <tfgbd> they just redistribute and stick to open source since the license is easier to deal with?

11:02:43 <Gizmokid2005> tfgbd: right. Typically the binaries are just just extracted and then packaged up using our installer.
11:02:59 <Gizmokid2005> But not always.
11:03:39 <Gizmokid2005> And there's actually a pretty sizable hosting bill for PA. Though I don't remember how much bandwidth it was pulling (I want to say it was pushin the 5TB mark a year ago) outside of SF.

22:19:37 <mwayne> JohnTHaller, http://portableapps.com/node/42763 ??
22:20:17 <JohnTHaller> I'm unsure what you're asking here. Do you want to package an app or something?
22:22:04 <mwayne> I want to run a .ahk file in the launcher but the autohotkey.exe is not included in the package.
22:22:07 <JohnTHaller> I'm guessing you don't want to include AHK's exe in the package. If not, you'll need to write your launcher from scratch. Upi cam
22:22:13 <JohnTHaller> You can't use PAL
22:25:30 <mwayne> Then it's better to include a copy of AutoHotkey.exe
22:26:00 <JohnTHaller> What app are you doing anyway? You know an AHK can be 'compiled' right?
22:28:11 *** Venusaur (~wdwrwf@wikipedia/Antonio-Lopez) has joined #portableapps
22:28:12 <mwayne> I am doing AHK Studio: http://ahkscript.org/boards/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=300
22:29:41 <JohnTHaller> Ah. I think compiling it would be the way to go. Including the ahk.exe could cause collisions with other AHK apps if PAL is waiting around for it. Tying it to the separately installed autohotkey would have a similar issue. Compiling it would give it its own name, etc. Protip: Don't compress or encrypt when compiling AHK.
22:37:25 <mwayne> Do you mean Ahk2Exe?
22:37:31 <JohnTHaller> Yes
22:37:37 <JohnTHaller> That's how you 'compile' AHK
22:40:26 <mwayne> uhh I think that would cause iussue with AHK Studio itself.
22:40:49 <JohnTHaller> Your call in how you want to do it then. Those are all the issues I see. And you can't do it in PAL.

22:44:37 <JohnTHaller> I have not looked at it since then
22:47:19 <mwayne> you should look in my continuation: http://portableapps.com/node/42611

22:48:12 <JohnTHaller> box
22:56:15 <mwayne> would it help to rename ahk.exe?
22:56:35 <JohnTHaller> it could
22:57:45 <mwayne> I gonna try that
23:15:24 <mwayne> Just want to let you know: http://portableapps.com/node/32477#comment-219026
