IRC Log from 2015-08-26

00:00:25 <Gizmokid2005> You tell the platform (and apps) where to install yourself. The only assumptions it makes is that you install the platform/launcher to X:\ and subsequently apps usually install to X:\PortableApps
00:00:32 <Gizmokid2005> They can start without the platform though
00:00:50 <Gizmokid2005> by simply opening the folder of the app you want to run and launching <appname>Portable.exe (eg. FirefoxPortable.exe).
00:01:25 <Gizmokid2005> Digi-Foo: this section (and the following) from the support page are pertinent. http://portableapps.com/support/platform#addingapps
00:02:43 <Gizmokid2005> Typically it's not suggested to install to the root of C: but rather something like C:\PA and treat that as the "root" of the PortableApps installation
00:04:44 <Digi-Foo> What I mean when I say root of c:\ is C:\Portable Apps The apps directory is on the root of c:\
00:05:00 <Gizmokid2005> So you launch the platform by C:\Start.exe?
00:13:32 <Digi-Foo> No, C:\Portable Apps\start.exe
00:14:01 <Gizmokid2005> Then your apps should be in C:\Portable Apps\PortableApps\AppNamePortable
00:15:12 <Digi-Foo> Yes. What is going on with the directory with *.paf files? There is a running apps directory and another directory with the *.paf files?
00:16:17 <Gizmokid2005> no, the .paf files are the app installers.
00:17:35 <Digi-Foo> Sorry, No. My apps are in c:\Portable Apps\App1. Start.exe is in c:\Portable Apps\start.exe
00:18:30 <Gizmokid2005> That's why, they need to be in a directory of PortableApps in order to be read.
00:18:53 <Gizmokid2005> So you'd have C:\Portable Apps\PortableApps\App1\
00:19:03 <Gizmokid2005> and C:\Portable Apps\Start.exe
00:19:31 <Digi-Foo> I was separating the words to communicate correctly the directory name is PortableApps
00:19:41 <Gizmokid2005> Doesn't matter, the point stands.
00:19:50 <Gizmokid2005> The directory structure needs to be as I just described it both times.
00:19:56 <Gizmokid2005> Any other way and the menu won't find the apps.
00:20:07 <Gizmokid2005> The support page I linked to also states this.
00:20:27 <Gizmokid2005> You could have C:\Start.exe with apps in C:\PortableApps\App1
00:23:13 <Digi-Foo> To clarify. The directory tree is: c:\PortableApps\PortableApps\exampleapp1
00:24:00 <Gizmokid2005> Yes, because we're assuming that you're using C:\PortableApps\ as the root of your PortableApps installation
00:24:25 <Gizmokid2005> So you have C:\PortableApps\Start.exe and C:\PortableApps\PortableApps\<APPSHERE>
00:43:27 <Digi-Foo> I don't get this, "it's in the forum stuff". Do you really think people have the time to sit down and methodically read through the posts and then hope they find all the posts that are relavent. IF I do a default install which I did follow from your site and I need to point to point the app share from another installation I should be able to run the platform.exe tell it where the app share is located and it should work!
00:46:07 <Digi-Foo> The directory structure should be C:\PortableApps\PA Launcher and then c:\PA AppShare or something which is clear to people that don't work with the app regularly.
00:46:23 <Gizmokid2005> I didn't say forum stuff Digi-Foo
00:46:30 <Gizmokid2005> I said the support page.
00:47:05 <Gizmokid2005> Digi-Foo: The app is hardcoded to look for a specific folder structure on purpose.
00:47:15 <Gizmokid2005> Going outside of that takes it out of the normal use cases.
00:47:27 <Gizmokid2005> For instance, installing to a local drive, rather than the root of a portable device.

01:06:48 <Dosimal> Hi, Can Portable apps be installed into one drive?
01:07:18 <Gizmokid2005> Dosimal: it can be run from folders that sync with onedrive (same as with Dropbox and similar) but cannot be run directly from onedrive itself.
01:07:29 <Gizmokid2005> The files need to be local for you to run them.
01:08:23 <Dosimal> Thanks
01:08:41 <Gizmokid2005> Sure thing.
