15:33:00 <Sarah3211> hi, Im trying to figure out how this works :-D to get some help with my portable thunderbird
15:33:10 <Sarah3211> ah ok
15:33:44 <Sarah3211> Help: my portable TB somehow updated or did something else strange overnight.
15:34:04 <Sarah3211> cause staurday all my emails, accounts, addresses were gone
15:34:14 <Sarah3211> anyone has an idea on how I can fix it?
15:35:48 <Sarah3211> help!
15:35:48 <GizmoBot> Sarah3211: Welcome to the PortableApps.com official chatroom. Ask your question and someone should be able to help you shortly. If you still don't get an answer, try posting on the forums: http://portableapps.com/forums
15:39:05 <Sarah3211> Hello??
15:39:24 <Sarah3211> pls, I do need help to get my emails etc back
15:52:59 <Gizmokid2005> Sarah3211: an update to Thunderbird will no cause it to lose settings.
15:53:21 <Gizmokid2005> have you restarted the computer and tried to relaunch TB portable like you normally would?
15:53:38 <Sarah3211> ok. what could be the reason then?
15:53:41 <Sarah3211> moment
15:54:24 <Sarah3211> yes, I restarted the computer, and I unplugged/replugged the external harddrive and then restarted the TB prot.
15:54:30 <Sarah3211> same result :-(
15:54:50 <Sarah3211> TB asks me if I want to creat a nw account.
15:55:21 <Gizmokid2005> If you look in the ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile folder, do you see a whole bunch of files?
15:56:49 <Sarah3211> more than 10 folders and lots of single files
15:58:02 <Gizmokid2005> Ok. Making sure that all current instances of Thunderbird are currently closed, if you just run ThunderbirdPortable\ThunderbirdPortable.exe does it work correctly?
16:00:02 <Sarah3211> I think that's what I usually do...
16:00:19 <Sarah3211> I cannot see the ".exe"-ending of the programme
16:01:16 <Sarah3211> this is what I do: Flashdrive E: -> folder protables -> thunderbird Portable : and here I click on the file with the TB logo
16:01:24 <Gizmokid2005> Yep, that's what you should do.
16:01:28 <Sarah3211> this will start TB, search emails etc...
16:01:36 <Gizmokid2005> But make sure that there's no other thunderbird programs running anywhere.
16:01:37 <Sarah3211> ok
16:01:42 <Sarah3211> no.
16:02:00 <Sarah3211> no other TB is on the computer or the harddrive installed
16:02:18 <Gizmokid2005> The best way to verify is just to restart your computer and then before doing anything else, try to start up ThunderbirdPortable.
16:03:18 <Gizmokid2005> Unfortunately, if you're running off of a regular old flash drive, it's very very possible that there's some corruption that is causing your problems, and at that point, if you don't have a backup, there's not much that we can do.
16:03:24 <Sarah3211> ok. can I come back to this chat by restarting from the favorite line?
16:03:42 <Gizmokid2005> You can come back at any time.
16:03:43 <Sarah3211> regular old means?
16:03:57 <Sarah3211> I bought it last fall
16:04:21 <Gizmokid2005> Just a typical run of the mill consumer grade flat flash drive.
16:05:31 <Sarah3211> ok, I'll retsrat and see if I come back here :-)
16:05:38 <Sarah3211> thx for your help so far!

16:11:13 <sarah3211> Gizmokid2005
16:11:29 <sarah3211> hi, the problem still exists
16:11:40 <Gizmokid2005> If that's the case, you can try reinstalling thunderbirdportable
16:11:50 <Gizmokid2005> it shouldn't be the cause of the issue, but it's worth a shot
16:11:59 <Gizmokid2005> especially since installing or reinstalling the application doesn't cause data loss.
16:12:20 <sarah3211> so I chose the same folder as the old TB for the new TB?
16:12:35 <Gizmokid2005> Yes
16:14:51 <sarah3211> in progress
16:21:21 <sarah3211> :-( same result: "Do you want to have a new Email address?"
16:21:37 <Gizmokid2005> It sounds like something may be corrupt in your profile.
16:22:05 <Gizmokid2005> My suggestion is to try the Thunderbird official support channels and it's possible that you could find answers on the PortableApps forums as well.
16:22:22 <sarah3211> ok. thx a lot!
16:22:33 <Gizmokid2005> sarah3211:
16:22:37 <Gizmokid2005> This may help as well: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_missing_profile
16:22:43 <Gizmokid2005> Or this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_cannot_be_loaded
16:22:57 <Gizmokid2005> I cannot be sure, I'm not suggesting they'll solve your problem, but they're worth looking into.
16:23:01 <sarah3211> thx for all your effort!
16:23:14 <sarah3211> yes, I do understand!
16:23:23 <Gizmokid2005> You're welcome.
16:23:34 <Gizmokid2005> Good luck. I've been in your shoes before, hopefully things turn out well.

21:08:11 <pa_1138> It's been one week, no response to post at: http://portableapps.com/node/54481
21:08:24 <pa_1138> How do I bring this to the attention of John Haller?
21:12:16 <pa_1138> help
21:12:16 <GizmoBot> pa_1138: Welcome to the PortableApps.com official chatroom. Ask your question and someone should be able to help you shortly. If you still don't get an answer, try posting on the forums: http://portableapps.com/forums
21:12:27 <Gizmokid2005> pa_1138: that's not a ThunderbirdPortable issue directly.
21:12:53 <Gizmokid2005> It's very likely an extension is what is causing the issue.
21:13:17 <Gizmokid2005> I've used TB Portable exclusively for over 7 years now without an issue.
21:13:22 <pa_1138> why does it work properly outside of the portable apps directory?
21:13:33 <Gizmokid2005> Does the portableapps drive letter ever change?
21:13:38 <pa_1138> no
21:14:16 <Gizmokid2005> Your guess is as good as mine. But if it was actually broken inside of TBP itself, you'd see far more issues than two preferences being reset. It would reset all of your preferences at minimum.
21:15:09 <pa_1138> I did a complete reinstall, into a new folder inside portableapps directory, reinstalled each extension
21:15:24 <Gizmokid2005> Did you ever try it without your extensions?
21:15:26 <pa_1138> the problem happened again.
21:15:37 <pa_1138> yes, without extensions
21:15:56 <pa_1138> after one or two restarts, the problem began again.
21:16:17 <pa_1138> thats when I dragged the thunderbird apps folder out of the portable apps directory
21:16:25 <pa_1138> and then the problem went away.
21:17:03 <pa_1138> and then thats when I posted on the forum.
21:17:04 <Gizmokid2005> So even without 0 extra extensions installed the problem persists?
21:17:20 <pa_1138> yes, it did
21:17:34 <Gizmokid2005> Have you checked any security software? This sounds like a system issue.
21:17:53 <Gizmokid2005> AV/security software is typically very touchy when it comes to removable devices.
21:18:12 <pa_1138> well, i disabled it, but that didn't resolve it.
21:18:38 <pa_1138> I might try excluding thunderbird from the security software.
21:18:57 <Gizmokid2005> There's usually multiple components to one, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was still an issue.
21:19:13 <Gizmokid2005> Exlusion, at least temporarily, is a good bet to troubleshoot.
21:19:21 <pa_1138> ok, i'll try excluding thunderbird.
21:19:28 <pa_1138> anything else?
21:20:40 <pa_1138> strangely, once the the problem occurs, I can manually close the message preview window and manually close the quick filter toolbar and restart thunderbird several times,
21:20:44 <Gizmokid2005> That's all I can think of offhand. I've never had an issue with it and I've gone from XP to 7 to 8/8.1 and 10, and between 7, 8.1 and 10 regularly without issue.
21:21:12 <pa_1138> each time the problem will NOT occur, but when I restart windows, then on the first start of thunderbird, the problem will happen again.
21:22:28 <pa_1138> this is the first issue I had with thunderbird of this kind. I was sure from reading posts that it was a preference file corruption, or extension confict, but reinstalling thunderbird and adding extension one at a time didn't show me where the problem was.
21:22:55 <pa_1138> But when I dragged thunderbird outside of the portable apps directory, then the problem went away.
21:23:17 <pa_1138> so I am thinkting that is where the problem is and why I posted.
21:24:15 <pa_1138> I would like to bring it to the attention of John Haller, other than the post, is there a way to let him know?
21:24:21 <Gizmokid2005> There is not.
21:25:17 <pa_1138> well, I'll hope he reads the post, if you talk him, I would appreciate it if you show him my post, please.
21:27:16 <pa_1138> well, i need to go
21:27:20 <pa_1138> thanks for the chat
21:27:22 <pa_1138> bye
